This invention relates Vto improvements in machines `adaptedgfor printing on the margin of sheets. The invention contemplates the production of a machine particularly adapted for printing the words ofr a song ror the like onthe marginfof `a roll of perforated paper commonly known as a playing roll and used in yconnection withan automatic player piano, organ, Orpthe'like. The general object of the invention is to simplitythe operation of printing a. roll for player pianosl and the like` and at the same time to reduce the'cost ofy such printing operation toa minimum. To these ends. the invention resides in almac'hine adapted for operating upon a pluralityofcorresponding rolls simultaneously and thereby eli'ect the printing the wordsof a song or the like on these rolls in one operation.

The type 'carrying yportion b` comprises a carriage frame or guide 7 `which `is supported by the legs 8, the parts 7 and 8 being formed or' metal or other suitable material and constructed so that the guide or carriage7, will extend parallel with the base plate 6 but be disposed atrile above the same. `On the side of the base plate 6 adjacent to the type carrying portion a series oie bearings 9 are provided for the trunnions l() of the platens ll, the surfacesof which are arranged in juxtaposition to the type carrier b as'shownin Fig. l. The upper ends of the platens are provided with trunnions l2 which are journaled in bracket arms 13, securedvto the upper sides of standards 15 which are Asecured or carried by the base plate 6. The parts thus far described and those presently to be described are operated by' a suitable motor (not shown) connected to suitable transmission devices which are in turn adapted to be connected to the platens. In Fig. '2 the rack 16 is con-` nected to the vsaid motor and is keyed to a vertical drive shaft 17, the lower end of which is disposed in a bearing 18 connected yto a floor plate or the like, and the upper end of which is journaled in a bearing 19 carriedby the end portion 2O of the guide 7. A bevel gear 2O` keyed to shaft 17 meshes with a bevel gear 21 keyed to akshaftn22, journaled inv bearings 23, secured lto one end ofthe roll carrying portion a. `A bevel gear'24 onshaft 22,1ladj acent to bevel O'ear v21,'n1eshes with a bevelgear 25, on shaf=t26 journaled in bearings 27 on the legs '5 adj acentto'the type carryingpart b. Face plates 32l on the lower ends ofthe platensll` have recesses 33 aligning with the bores :ofthe trunnions into which are adapted to be projected the clutch heads 34, one of whichis shownin Fig. 11. The rod 35secured to head 34 is surrounded bya compression spring 36 which bears on the shoulder 37 in the boreof the trunnionl() andl on ahead 38 secured tothe lower end of rod 35.', The action of the spring normally holds theends orfhva `transverse pink39 extending through the head 38 in the lowerends of a pair of oppositely disposed slots in the wall of trunnion 10, one of said slots being shown in Fig. `11, and indicated by 40. When in normal position, the head34 is retracted fromfthe recesss'3`3 so that turning movement of shaft 26 vand trunnion 10 is not transmitted to platen 11. Referring nowy to. Figures 1 and 3, they end of shaft 22 remote i from bevel gear' 24 iS provided with a' bevel gear 4Q which meshes withthe bevelfgear 41 secured to a shaft 42 disposed parallel with shaft 26 and arranged opposite thereto and journaled in bearings 43 secured to the legs 5. Collars 44 on shaft 42 prevent endwise movement of the shaft in the bearings 43. A plurality of bevel gears, one of which is shown in Fig. 3 and indicated by 45 are disposed substantially opposite to bevel gears 30 and secured to shaft 42. The bevel gear 45 shown in Fig. 3 meshes with the bevel gear 46 secured to one end of a tubular shaft 47, loose upon a spindle 48, the'upper end of which is journaled in the overhanging portion 49 of a bracket 50 secured to the base plate 6 by bolts `51 or their equivalents passing through openings in lateral extensions 5,2 -ofthe `bracket as shown in Fig 1. A tubular vshaft 53 surrounds spindle 48 below overhanging portion 51 and is splined to the said spindle, this tubular shaft 53 forming oney of the elements of a clutch, the
`tubular shaft '47;- These clutch elements normally engage so that rotary motion is imparted'to the spindle 48 by the turning of shaft 42. The upright shank 54 of bracket 50 supports a T-shaped head, the stem portion 55 of which isvprovided with a bearing for the upper end of the spindle 56 which extends through and is secured to a bearing roll 57. As shown inFig. 1, the bearing rolls 57 yare disposed parallel with the platens 11 and substantially correspond therewithin point of size. The base 49 ofbracket 50visl provided with a trunnion 63 Iwh'ichis received by an opening inthe lower end ofthe spool 62,V the upper end lof which is recessed tovreceive a pin 64 extendingy through one end portion of the upper T-shaped .head55`and surrounded by a compression spring 65 which operates to force the piny 64 into the recess of the spool and thereby preventsv disenf gagement ofthe parts under lateral pullon the spool. The pin 64 is' providedwith a milled head 66 which facilitates pulling the pin against they action of the spring in removing the spool or positioning the same in the bracket, as shownin Fig. 3.. It being understood that the length'of the spool will be greater than the normal distance between the terminals `,ofthe pins 63 and 64 in order that upward movement of the pin 64 against action of the spring 65 will ltake place in adjusting the spool to the posit-ion shown in Fig. 3. A winding spool 67 similar to the spool 62 and which will provide the bobbin or spool permanently combined with the finished music roll, is as shown in Fig. 3, positioned opposite spool 62 with its lower end in engagement with the upper 'end of the spindle 48 and its Aupper end engaged bv i upon is wound on the spool 62 and when the paper is directed from roll 57 and around platen 1l, and connected to spool 67, the` latter when operated from .the shaft 42 and spindle 48 operates to unwind the paper from the spool 62 and by the action of the spool 67, the paper will be wound thereupon. During this action on the part of the winder spool 67 it will be noted that the platen will also rotate and likewise the roll 57, thus rolling surfaces are provided for the paper `and friction reduced to a minimum.
lt is proposed to eliminate the manual operation which would ordinarily be required in connecting the end of the roll 69 tothe spool 67 by training the said end laround the platen and connecting it to the spool, and at the same time to provide means whichwill prevent the paper from slipping during the operation of printing, when the kinner end of the paper is disengaged from the spool 62. For this purpose suitable fasteners, an embodiment of which is shown in Fig. 6 are provided and riveted as indicated by 7 O, or otherwise suitably secured at suitable intervals to 4the fiexible element 58.
rThe stationary jaw 7l of each fastener or engaging element which is secured to the flexible elementi 58 is preferably of metal and relatively narrow and oblong and disposed upright or transversely with respect to the element 58. The projecting upper end of jaw 71 has a recess which receives the movable jaw 72 which is connected by a pivot'pin 73. The usual spring construction is associated with the lpivot 7 3 for operating the jaw 72 to cooperate with the jaw 71 to clamp an element therebetween. The upper end portion 74 of the kjaw 72 is offset and constructed so as to cooperate with a trip 75 herein shown for purposes of illustration as a horizontally y disposed plate formed of metal and substantially U-shaped in contour and connected to the T-shaped head 55 or other suitable portion of the bracket 50. As shown inF ig. 5 side portions of the trip 75 slope downwardly as indicated by 76 and the terminal portions as shown in` Fig. l, and indicated by 77 project upwardly and are disposed in the path of movement of the offset portion 74 of the jaw 72, and are so constructed as to `deflect the odset portion andcause the same to turn on the pivot 7 3 and by the sloping of the portion 76, to turn the jaw 72 into a substantially horizontal position. In Fig. 5, the location of the side portions of the trip- 75 is such that a narrow space 78, exists between the strip and the iexible element 58, and this space is such as to accommodate the offset portion 78 when the same is turned into a horizontal position. The terminal portions of the trip` 75 correspond and the trip is so constructed and disposed that the extensions 74 when the exible element moves in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. l remain depressed from the time of engagement with one of the terminal portions of the trip, until moved by the flexible element from engagement lwith the other terminal at which time the jaw 7 2 operating under the action of itsI spring moves to closed position. 'l/Vith ythis construction the operator is required only to engage the end of roll 69 with vthe fastener on the right in l nearest the trip 75 after which vthe succeeding trips will automatically engage the marginal rportion of the sheet of paper as they emerge from underneath the trip and as the paper is carried by the movement of the `endless element 58. It will be noted that the standard l5 is provided with lateral bearing surfaces in the form of rectangular plates 79 disposedbetween the rolls v57 and platens 11, and arranged substantially at a tangent thereto. l/Vith this construction bearing rsurfaces are provided for the sections of paper disposed bet-Ween ythe platens and rolls in the movement of the paper fromrone -spool to the other.
It is usual that the free end of the roll of perforated paper be substantially tri- Y angular shaped in contour so that the usual engaged with the take-off roll of the musical instrument. The present inventionv proposes tofoim the said end ofthe paper roll triangular after the printing operation and subsequent to the complete unwinding of the roll. on the spool 62. In Figures l, 2 and 7, vertical supports 80 are shown on the left of the platens in Figures l and 2, and adjacent the bearing Iplates 7 9, and each support, as shown in ig. 7 carries a triangular shaped cutting plate 81, the free ends ofthe side por-l tions of which are rounded and .elongated and bent inwardly and constitute pintles 82 which are journaled in brackets 83 secured to lthe support 80. Helicalsprings 84 sur-round roo 'fro 5 the pintles and operate normally to hold the l cutting edge of the cutter 8l in spaced relation to the adjacent bearing plate 7 9.on which is disposed a triangular shaped strip 85 secured to the plate by screws ortheir equivalents 86 and disposed so as to cooperate with the cutter 8l 'to permit the Vlatter to cut as a shears. The normal width of the space between the cutter 8l and strip 85v iso fac-e ofthe base plate 6 and having la `pin and slot connectionfw-ith a bell crank lever 91. lVith thisconstruction the turningof lever 91 rocks shaft 89 and turns link 87 which 'moves cutting plate 81 over the edge plate 8 5. 1t is ,essential that there be no movement on the `part of the endless element 58, platen 11, and roll 57, during the operation ofthe cuttingplate 81 in' order that the paper be at rest during the operation oit the cutter; to accomplish this a lever 92 is provided and iulcrumed as indicated at 93, to the lowerV face ot plate 6. One end portion of this lever is provided with an upwardly inclined'surtacefl which is engaged by an Iarm oli the bellcrank lever 91, whenthe `.lever 91 moves to operate the cutter 81. Engagement .between the 4levers 91 and 92 operates todepress thel end portion 9d of the latter, whereupon the opposite end portion 94 which bifurcated and arranged in a groove 95 of the tubular shaft portion 53 is elevated and thereby the teeth thereon disengage from the teeth of theelement f1?. Atthe Sametime, andas shown in Figures 11 and 12, the forked end 96 of a lever 97 vpivoted to a bracket arm 98 depending i'rom the base plate 6 is depressed by thel coil spring 36 in the trunion 37 and the head 33 disengaged from the platen 11, whereupon. movement of the platen ceases. ln Figures 11 and v12 it will be observed that the ends ot the pin 39 extend into thegroove in a ring 99 pivoted to the forked end portion 90 of the lever 97. Y
Referring now to Figures 1 and 2, the end of the guidev7 remote from the shaft 17 is supported by an upright 100 which is adj ust ably mounted on a base plate 101. provided with adjusting screws 102 Jfor adjustably securing the upright longitudinally oit the plate 101 and in a direction toward or away from shaft 17. A bearing 103 in a toot 1041 of the upright 100 is provided for a shaft 105 whichy is also journaled in spaced bearinos 107 .and 108 at the ends or" angularlyv disposed `arms 109 at the upper end portion of the upright 10.0. A sprocket wheel 110 secured to shaft 105 between the bearingsf107 and `108 isqin alignmentwithV a sprocket wheelj111 at the upper end portion of shaft 17. The sprocket chain 112 is trained around the sprocket wheels 110 and 111`and lthe .adjustability ot upright 100 provides for compensating t'or linear eXtension or contraction ol' the said chain. rllhe chain 112 comprises thebase of the type carryingportion ot the machine and the type carrying` elements 113 are pivotallyconnected to the said chain at one end. Each element 113 as shown in Fig. 8, is a channeled structure and formed of metal, and somewhat greater in length than the length ot any ot the `links 115 of thev chain 112. `The -links of the chain are receivable bythe channels 11i the elements 113vwhich latter have openings 115 in one Aend portion of their opposite sides 116 (and 117 to receive the pivot pins conncting adjacentlinks of the chain 112.` With this construction the elements 113 may turn on the pivot-s during the time that the llinks 115 move over` the sprockets y110 and111.
' 1n the use oi' the'present device, a stamp is` prepared for each word to be printed on the margin of the music sheet, one of such stamps is shown in Figures 9 and 10 and comprises a base 118 formed preferably of `rubber and provided on one 'face with atriangular Jrace ribbed 119 which is insertable into a socket 120 formed by upstruck portions from the face 121 of the stock 122 which is preferably formed 'of a single piece oit metal preferably U-shaped in contour and having` inturned iianges 123 andv1211 which are insertable into longitudinal grooves 125 and 126 in the sides 116 and 117 of the ytype carrying elements 113. .The construction of the stocks 122Y and the provision ot the greoves 125 permit the stocks to be adjusted in the direction of vthe length of the elements 113, the resiliency ot the metal of the stocks and the' construction of the same permitting the stocks to frictionally engage the elements 113`and hold the stocks in any ot their adjusted positions. `With this oonstruction an appreciable amount of pressure by. theiingers on the part of the operator is required to move the stocks fromone position of adjustment to the other on the elements 13, and the degree of Contact between the stocks `and the elements 113 lwill be suilicient to overcome any tendency from' contact between the parts to Vdisplace the stocks as wili hereinafter be described. 1t will be observed that'the area'ot the. stock is so proportioned withirespect to the length of the element 113,-a plurality of stocks may be arranged on each of the elements 113.` This construction of course may be modified, it being obvious that the elements 113 .may be yproportioned to accommodate a greater number ot stocks than shown in Fig. 1, or may be constructed so as to accommodate one stock. In anyevent the number of elements 113 provided or the chain 112 will be suliicient to accommodate enough stocks to provide tor a predetermined number or" words of a song which in ordinary cases will be the number ot words'included in several verses and choruses. .lt will be noted by reference to Figures 1 that a section ot' the chain 112 indicated in Figure 1 by 127 is eX- posed by reason that the combined lengths .of the elements 1.13 is somewhat less than the total length of the chain. Referring now to Figures 1, 2, and 11it will. be observed that -the arrangement of the type carriage is such'that the stamps 118 make contact with the platens 11 when moved by the chain to the inner side of the guide 7, as shown in Fig. 1. And the lower sides-116 of the elements 113 intercept the upper ends of the levers 97 and thereby depress the said levers with the result that the heads 33 are engaged with the platens 11 and rotation transmitted to the platens by the gear conf nection` previously described. It will be therefore, observed, by reference to Fig 1, that the elements 113 are disposed so that their ends substantially abut when arranged in alignment. This construction provides a substantially uninterrupted contact between the elements 113 and levers 97 shown in Figures 2 and 11 so that after the levers 97 have been successively engaged the platens will rotate continuously until the exposed section 127 'of the chain moves into alignment with the levers 97 at which time sufficient clear ance will be afforded for the said levers by reason of the absence of the elements 113 to permit springs'36 to depress the pins 35 and disengage the heads 33 from the platens 11, and thereby cause movement of the platens in the parts connected therewith to cease. Reference now to Fig. 7 shows a pin 128 depending from the exposed portion 127 of the chain 112. The outer end portion of lever 91 extends into the path of movement ofthe said pin. The pin is so positioned with respect to the series ofl levers 91 shown in Fig; 1 that the levers are successively engaged bythe pins upon the levers97 being released by the last element 113 carried by the chain IThe movement impartedto the levers 91 as these are successively engaged by thepin 128 operates the cutter 81 to engage and'cut the sheetl of paper as previously described. It will also be remembered that during this operation of the cutter, the clutch elements for spool 67 are disengaged so that there will be no movement on `the part of the paper being operated upon by the cutter. Referring now to Fig. 4, the lever 129 is pivoted as indicated at 13() to the lowerface of the base plate 6 and disposed so as to move horizontally. The pin andy slot constructions 131 connect one end of lever 129 withthe crank arm 132 connected to a vertically disposed shaft 133 disposed inthe upright arm of the bracket 50. The upper portion of the shaft 133 terminates in a crank arm 134 which projects outwardly and is pivotally connected to a container 135 which is pivoted to the bracket 50 and is provided with a c lateralopening 136; and closed at its lower .end and' provided "at its upper end with a re-y movable cap 137. Normally the container is disposed in the space betweenA the spools `62 and 67V and when the shaft 133 is turned, the crank arm 134 operates to .tilt the container to the right in Fig. 3 and into contact with the spool 67. The portion of the container making contact with the spool is at the opening 136 so that the adhesive flows through the opening and onto the surface of theY spool.
In the use of the device the usual prelimin'ary of preparing a master roll is carried out. Stamps 118 are then provided to correspond with the words printed on the master roll. The stamps 118 are then inserted into the keepers 120' of the stocks so that the words of the song will appear in the same relation as on the master roll.
. It will be obvious that the words on the masword of the song will be on thel end of the j first element 113 on the outside of the type carrier in Fig. 1. The end of the roll 69 which is reversely wound on spool 62, is then taken and engaged with that clip on the flexible carrier nearest to the terminal of the side portion of the deilector on the right, in Fig. 2. It will of course be understood that `although this description is limited to engaging one of the rolls 69, it will be taken to apply to the other rolls disposed in the machine and the connection between the various rolls and their respective clips will be made before the machine is set in operation. After engagement has been effected between the roll 69 and the clip, and the shaft 17 caused to turn by the action of the motor,`movement of thechain 112 carries a pin 139 into contact with the projecting end of lever 129 whereupon the container 135 is tilted and an application of adhesive made to spool 67 Continued movement on the part of the flexible carrier advances the sheet of-paper from roll 69 to the platen 11 and then between the cutter, and finally to the spool 67 where the operator effects engagement by pressing the end of the sheet on the surface ofthe spool which then by its rotation operates to wind the sheet of paper thereon.` When the perforations on the roll 69 opposite to the portion thereof to be printed move to the platen 11, first stamp 118 will be then in position to impress said sheet and will then move to the adjacent sheet trained around the adjacent platen andso on until the various sheets have been impressed. By virtue of the adjustment of the stamps,
those succeeding the first stamp will imj not to be limited to the constructionk and arrangement of parts herein described, being obvious that-mechanical changes within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit or sacriioing any` advantage of the invention.
I claim:
l. In a printing machine a plurality ot sets of parts, each comprising a perpendicular rotatable device, adapted :for supporting a' spool and winding a sheet of paper thereon, a lsupport for` the paper to be wound, arranged in spaced relation to the winding device and 4substantially parallel thereto, anda platen for supporting the section ot they sheet of paper between the spool and the support as the paper moves from the support to the spool, and a single type car. rier cooperating with all of the platens to print the sheets supported by them.
2. In a printing machine, a plurality of movable platens all of which are located -in a plane coinciding with the planefoie their movement, type carrying elements movable bodily and successively into cofoperativ'e reJ lation with said platens to form printing couples, and an endless elongated carrier for supporting the type carrying elements and` moving them relatively to the platens.
3. Ina printing machine, a plurality ,of rotatable devices. adapted for supporting a' plurality of spools, 'and winding a plurality of sheetsot' paper thereon, a plurality of supports for the sheets ci paper to be wound, arranged inspaced relation to the winding devices, a plurality olfv platens 'for supporting the sect-ions of the sheets of paper between the spools and the supports as the sheets move trom the supports to thel spools, rand a singlemovable type carrier constructed to co-act simultaneously with each of the platens to constitute a printing ports to the spools, a single, movable type carrier substantially equal in width to one of the platens, said carrier havingr the type thereof arranged on a single line, and .disposed so that the said type successively impress lthe portions ot the sheets supported by theplatens and means tor moving the typecarrier in a plane intersecting all of the platens. 6. In a printing machine,` a rotatable de vice, adapted for-supporting ay spool, and winding a sheet of paper thereon, a support for the paper to be wound arranged in spacedrelation tothe winding device, a platen for supporting the section of the sheet of paper between the spool and the. support as the paper. moves from the support to the spool, movable means yadapted Vfor engaging the paper andcarryingthe samefrom the support to the platen, and a movable type carrier having the typethereof disV posed in alignment, andar-ranged, so thatthe said type-impress the portion ot the sheet supported by the platen.
` 7. In a printing machine, a rotatable` de vice adapted for `supporting' a spool, and winding a -sheet of paper thereon, a sup.- port for the paper tovbe Wound, arranged' in spaced relation .to the winding device, a platen for supporting the section of the sheet of paper between the spool andthe support as the paper moves from the support to the spool, and movable means adapted*I for en'- gaging the paper and carrying the same from the support to the platen and directing the paper from the lplaten to the AWinding device.v y i f vv8. In a printing machine, a rotatable device adapted for supporting a spool and Winding a sheet of paper thereon, a support for the paper to be wound, arranged in spaced relation to the winding device, a platen for supporting the section of the sheet of paper between the spool and the support as the paper moves from the sup portto the spool, movable means adapted for engaging the paper and carrying thel same from the support to the platen and directing the paper from the platen to the winding device, a cutter disposed so as to operate on the `sheet of paper, and means adapted to be operated by the type carrier to actuate the cutter to cut the sheet when the `tree end portion thereof is disposed between the winding device and the platen.

In a printing machine, a rotatable device adapted for supporting a spool and' winding a sheet of paper thereon, a support for the paper to be wound arranged in spaced relation to the winding device, a platen for supporting the section vof the sheet of paper between the spool and the support as the paper moves trom the support to the spool, movable means adapted for engaging the paper and carrying the same from the support to the platen, and directing the paper from the platen to the winding device and automatically releasing `the paper, a movable type carrier having the type thereof disposedi in a single line and arranged to impress the portion of the sheet Supported by the platen, a cutter arranged adjacent to the portion of the sheet disposed between kthe platen and the winding device and the cooperating structures carried by the cutter and the type carrier for operating the cutter to cut the tree end portion of the sheet when the same is disposed between the winding device and the platen.` f y '13. In a printing machine, a rotatable device adapted for supporting a spool and winding a ysheet Aotpaper thereon, a `support for the paper to be wound, arranged in spaced relation to the winding device, a` platen 'for supporting the section of the sheet of paper between the spool and the support asthe paper moves from the support to the spool, movable means adapted for engaging the paper and carrying the paper from the platen to the winding device, and automatically releasing the paper, a movable type carrierl having the type thereof disposed in a single line and arranged to impress the portion of the sheet supported by the platen, a cutter arranged adjacent to the portion of the sheet disposed between the platen and the winding device and co-operating structures carried by the cutter and the type carrier for operating the cutter to cut the free end portion of the sheet when. the same is disposed between the Winding device and the platen, and means operated by the type carrier for stopping the movement of the winding device n through operation of the cutter.

In a printing machine, a rotatable de vice adapted for supporting a spool and winding a sheet of paper thereon, a sup-A port for the paper to be wound arranged in spaced relation to the winding device, a platen for supporting the section of the sheet of paper between the spool and the support as the paper moves Jfrom the support to the spool, movable means adapted for engaging the paper and carrying the same from the suport to the platen, and directing the paper from the platen to the winding device and automatically releasing the paper, a movable type carrier having the type thereof disposed in a single line and arranged to impress the portion of the sheet supported by the platen, a cutter arranged adjacent to the portion of the sheet disposed between the platen and the winding device and the cooperating structures carried by the cutter andv the type carrier for operating the cutter to cut the free end portion of the sheet when the same is disposed beween the winding device and the platen, means detachably connected to the winding device and the type carrier for operating the same, and means carried by the type carrier for disengaging the winding device :trom the said operating means during the operation of the cutter.
