that any articles in the same will have its fabric thoroughly cleansed by the seepage action of the liquid, induced by the agitation.

Another object 'is to provide a machine having a series of splashers which will beat the surface of the liquid thereby inducing the soapy solution into a foam, in which state it is a very active agent for the cleansing. a 4

Still another object is to provide a machine whichcan be quickly inserted and secured in a wash tub, so designed that changeability of parts with respect to the motor can be had, this being desirable when the coarse fabric of working garments and the much liner texture of silks is considered.

A still further object of splashers is to beat down into the liquid any of the clothes which may force themselves above the surface.

The above and other objects will become apparent in the description below in which characters of reference will refer to the likenamed parts in the drawings.

Referring briefly to the drawings, Figure 1 represents across-sectional, side elevation of the wash tub with the washing machine attachment n'iountedtherein, the section being taken on line ll of Figure 2.

Figure 2 is a top plan view of the same showing the cover plate in place and the means for rotating the device mounted on the cover.

Figure 3 is atop plan view of the washer spindle with all the parts attached thereto.

mon rectangular set-tub having ends 11, rear side 12 and the outwardly inclined front side 13 forming a conventional tub into which the water is placed'and the clothes to be washed immersed therein.

A board 14 having corrugations 15 formed on its upper surface covers the entire tub bottom 10. The corners of the. board 14 have the uprights 16 secured thereto the latter forming rests for the wooden frame 17 which snugly fits the open top of the tub.

A T-shaped frame 18, secured to the top surface of the frame 17, serves as a reinforcing member forthe cover, which carries the whole washing attachment.

Bearing brackets 19 secured to the reinforcing plate 18, revolubly receive a horizontally disposed shaft 20, to the one end of which a beveled gear 21 is secured. The opposite end of the shaft has a crank 24 fixedly secured to it both-being rotated by grasping the handle A beveled pinion 22 in mesh with gear 21, and secured to the vertical spindle is revolubly fixed to the frameof the tub, the spindl 23'passing into the tub'chamber. i

A carrier bar 28has a central flange 27 the latter having an integral sleeve 26 with a hole 26 to slidably receive the spindle 23, and it can be acljustably secured in any desired position on the spindle by the thumb nut 29. Inclined surfaces 30, formed on the carrier bar 28, slope in opposite directions with respect to each other and have a pair of splashers 31 secured to each end by screws. The splashers are close to the Sur face of the water and are adapted to beat down any clothes which may work themselves above the surface.

A vertically disposed agitator 32 18 releasably secured to the carrier bar by a pin engaging holes 34 in plates 33, the latter being secured to opposite sides of the agitator 32, and a hole 34 located in the carrier.

Flexible rubber wings 35, in planes tangential to the center of member 32 and somewhat off-set from it, extend outwardly from the member 32 and are secured to it by the angular members 36 through the medium of rivets.

The base agitator 32 has a hole 37 which engages the pin 38 fixed in the corrugated board bottom 14 and forms an end pivot bearing for the agitator.

From the drawing and foregoing description it is apparent, that by grasping shaft 20 the entire washing attachment can be lifted clear of the tub, after the thumbscrews 38 have been withdrawn.

' In order to fill the wash tub with clothes the entire rotor is detached from the spin dle 23 by releasing the screw 29, after which the rotor is centered byengaging the stud 38.

Then, the tub is filled with a washing fluid extreme nearly to the ends of the splashers 31..

In operation, clothes are thrown into the tub through openings provided in the cover frame 17. The tub isithen filled until the fluid surface is; in imminent contact with the ends: of splashers 31, after which washing is accomplished by rotating the crank handle 25.v

\Vhen the device isnot in. use it can be easily detached by withdrawing the thumb screws38, after which thereinforcing plate and all: the members mounted thereon can befreed from the-cover l7 and. conveniently storedv within the tub, thereby permitting covering the entire tub without. having to guard against any projections.

A. washing machine comprising the combination with a tub having a corrugated bottom, of a frame removably engaged .in said tub, a cylindrical element rotatable on a vertical axis in the tub, flexible vanes ex: tending lengthwise of said element in opposed lateral relation, a bar extending transversely across the top of said element, a spindle engaging said bar axially of said element, said spindle being rotatably guided in one of the frame members, a pintle on the interior walls engaging said corrugated bottom, a cylinder rotatably mounted in a vertical plane in said tub, a pair of oppositely disposed flexible vanes fixed on said cylinder to extend. outwardly at both ends, a bar having oppositely mclined seats,

beaded elements fined on said seats, and.

means. for rotating said cylinder and bar.

The combination with a fixed rectangue lar wash-tub of a washer comprising a bottom plate and frame members, the. up? per-most of said frame members having bearing brackets, a. shaft rcvolubly mounted, a shaft, said shaft having a-cranlr arm at one end and a beveled gear at the opposite end, a beveled pinion secured to a vertical spindle and in mesh with said gear, a. cross bar having a collar attached to the upper surface thereof, said collar slidably engaging the spindle, inclined surfaces on the cross bar disposed in opposite directions toteach other, a pair of splashers mounted on each of the inclined surfaces to extend outwardly from said cross bar in opposite directions an agitator attached to the cross bar and flexible elements having straight unbroken edges disposed vertically on said agitator.
