INNERSOLE FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Ang. 29, 1922.
Application filed necember so, 1921. serali No. 525,973.
sole for Boots and Shoes, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a new inner sole Vfor shoes and boots for men, women and children. which. shall be cheap to manufacture, simple in construction and highly efficient in use, and which possesses great utility and commercial value as will be hereinafter set forth.
The essential feature of my invention consists in splitting or spreading the inner sole from hack center of the heel to back center of the ball tread, the split or slit of the sole extending to within approximately one half inch of the outside borflff;v o." lthe said inner sole; the slit following the. inner or inside border of said inner sole, from center of heel to' ball as above mentioned. In this way, I create a pocket arranged at the instep of the human foot, which will not interfere with the tread or foot action. and may house a pad that will he of great benefit in easing foot troubles of various kinds.
The inner sole thus splitor slit as shown and described is built into the shoe or boot the saine as the custom now in vogue, except that the uppe flap formed by the slit is allowed to be lose and is not sewed into the shoe, thus it forms a piocket. Into this pocket any kind of forms or props, wedges,
buttons, cushions or similar filler elements,
may be placed by the wearer, by simply lifting up said flap of the sole and inserting the same. By this means, the wearer can build up the heel or sole part to a point adapted to correct the foot ailments without risk, and thus himself form a shoe sole which will support his foot as it should be supported. The wearer to ease his foot may insert into the pocket hair, cotton, felt or leather of any suitable amount or thickness, width or length, as the wearer feels is necessary to bring about relief and comfort to the foot.
My invention dispenses with and eliminates the .use of inner loose appliances or supports or loose supporting devices, and eliminates the risk of using wrong size and shape of suoli loose supports, which often cause greater injury and discomfort than goed.
By usingr my invention, proper length ad- Justment is always present. as my inner sole is a permanent feature of each size shoe for man, woman or child, as fitted to the foot.
Great expense for loose inside appliances ofI various kinds and forms is also dispensed with by the use of my invention. lt will readily be seen, that by the use of my invention, the shoe at the sole part can be adjusted to fit the foot to correct any ailment resulting from the ankle, foot or knee. caused by improper foot support at the sole and heel of the foot.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification:v
Fig. l is an elevation of a shoe, looking at the same from the side, hrokeii away partly, to show my invention in position therein, a ller block being shown in position,
Fig. 2 is a plan View of a. sole made in accordance with my invention, partly broken away,
Fig. 3 is a side edge view of the sole, disconnected from the shoe, showing the contour of the same when in positioninthe shoe, and showing part of the inner sole slitted and the fiap formed thereby in a raised position,`
Fig. al is a cross-section on the line 4 4 of ig. 2, a filler block being however used,
Fig. 5 is an isometric view of one of the pads or props which can be used in connec tion with my new inner sole.
Fig. 6 is al plan view. of another form of such prop or filler piece,
Fig. 7 is a similar View of another form of filler piece.
ig. 8 is a sectional View on line 8-8 of Fig, 7.
Fig. 9 is a sectional view along line 9 9 of Fig. 6.
ln the drawing l represent a shoe, having an upper l, a heel 2, and a sole 3; the par ticular heel used by me is one shown in my lPatent No. 1,264,127, dated August 23rd,
1918. This shoe may be of any construction and of any size or contour.
My new inner sole is composed of the heel part 4, the ball and toe part 5, and the arch part 6 and is built into the shoe as shown in Fig. l. This inner sole part is'f slitted approximately as shown by the lines designated and defined by the character 7, and is slit from the inner side of the sole, and this part of the sole which is slit, generally extends from approximately the middle line et the heel, as shown, to the ball part of the inner sole and in the present instance reaches to Within about one half inch from the outer edge oi said inner sole, see particularly Fig. This part of the inner sole Yforms a pocket which opens from the inner edge to theline T-7`7g thus forming a recess into which may be inserted different kind and forms of props, cushions, filler` blocks or the like, to build up the inner sole so that its built up contour will properly support the foot as it rests thereon. In Figs. 5, (i, 7, 8, and 9, l show some of these props or filler blocks for building up the inner sole as aforesaid. ln Figs. l and 4 I show a filler block as 7 .in position.
1When a particular shoe of this character, having my inner sole theiein, is purchased, said purchaser, if he has certain foot ailments, may lift the upper flap, where the sole is slit and thus gain access to said pocket, and into this pocket may insert a suitable torni or kind oi iller block or elevating or raising prop, or cushion until said inner sole has assumed a contour needed. to eliminate the ailment, thus giving the foot ease and comfort.
By the use of this device, it will be plainly seen that foot ailments are relieved by a permanent in'imovable lling which can be placed in the pocket formed by the inner sole, and this filling will always remain in a given and standard position. The separate insertable devices or arch supports which are placed on top ot' the ordinary inner soie, do not retain the same position,
but move around, and are of a fixed form as to length and breadth, often being of an improper torni, whereas in my device the user himself builds up the support to answer the purposes it is intended to serve.
It 'will be understood that the inner sole may be slitted or split to form a pocket of any desirable contour and that I may use my newinner sole in connection with any style of boot or shoe, and may build the same up by using any kind of iilling material.
What l claim as new and my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
l. in a shoe, a one-piece sole of substantially the'same length as the shoe permanently fixed to and forming part of said shoe, said sole being split in a plane substantially parallel to the upper and lower faces of said sole to form a pocket, said split extending trom one side edge portion of the sole to a position adjacent to but spaced from the opposite, side edge of the sole in order to form a freely movable flap to permit access to said pocket, and a pad removably arranged in said pocket.
2. In a shoe as claimed in claim l, said split extending longitudinally of the sole `from the heel end of the same to the point adjacent to the ball portion of the sole, and the entire upper surface ot said sole being smooth.
In testimony whereof, l aiiix my signature at Cincinnati, Ohio, this 22nd day of pecen'iber, i921.
