CABLE SPLICE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug, 29, 1922.
Application filed September 17, 1919. Serial No. 324,259.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. NEWBERRY, of Huntington, in the county of Cabell and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements'in Cable Splices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My object is to improve this class of devices by providing one which will not only hold the cable ends securely but will also guard against injuringthe cable strands by presenting to them a continuous uninterrupted surface, and be of such, formation as to efi'ect-ively resist torsional strain.
Figure 1 shows the metallic blank stamped in conformity with my invention. Figure 2 shows it bent to assume its commercial form, and Figure 3 shows it compressed upon a cable splice.
The blank 1 consists of a flat strip of metal of peculiar formation. Regard ng the dotted line A-A, Figure 1, as indlcat lng substantially the center of its body portion, the blank is stamped to form a tapering'extremity constituting a ton e 2 at one side of the center, while at the other side it is cut in ll-shape to form twotapering extremities constituting a pair of tongues 3.
The inner walls 4 of the tongues 3 are pitched at anangle which substantially corresponds with that of the outer edges 5 of tongue 2. The space between walls 4, however, is sufficient to permit the tongue to enter so that the surfaces 4 will form guides for the tongue, and these surfaces and surfaces 5 may lie in even contact when the device is compresed upon the cable coupling, as shown in Figure 3.
Figure '2 shows the article as it is sold commercially. with the blank sufiiciently curled to permit of the cable ends being inserted from either side. By means of a suitable implement the ring which the metallic strip forms may be compressed until the tip 6 of tongue 2 reaches the crotch 7 and the tips 8 of the tongues 3 reach the points 9 of the body portion, that is, the point of commencement of the taper which forms the tongue 2. It is not necessary that the compression be carried to this extent, however, in order to firmly splice the cables.
The fully compressed ring forms a cylinder with a smooth inner surface tending to preserve the cable strands and maintain them in proper relation without injury. The ends of the cylinder are right cangular with rela-. tion to the sides, owing to the parallel sides 10 of tongues 3 which form the ends. Obviously the ring is capable of resisting the strain due to a twist in the cable, because of the extent of contacting surfaces between the extremities which may yield without breaking contact or releasing the cable strands.
I claim as my invention:
1. As an article of manufacture, a cable splice comprising a flat metallic blank hav ing its main body ortion formed with parallel side edges, an tapered at one side of its center to form a single tongue, and at the other side split to form a V-shaped recess whose side walls, with said parallel side edges, form a pair of tapering tongues, said blank being adapted to be curled and compressed to form a ring and cause said single tongue to be received and stopped in said recess and enclosed by said pair of tongues, said parallel side edges forming right angular ends of the ring.
2; The herein described cable splicing clamp comprising a single piece of flexible ,material embodying a body portion of rectangular formation and having its side walls parallel, said body portion being formed at one end andmidway between the side edges with a tapered integral tongue and formed in its opposite end with an inwardly tapered longitudinally disposed slot in longitudinal alinement with said tongue, the tongue and the slot being co-extensive one with the other in both length and width, whereby when the body portion is flexed around the cable. the tongue will be snugly received in the slot and the completed splice will be devoid of all open joints or seams.
