I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an oiling apparatus for automobiles and more particularly to an improved construction of the engine crank case structure by means of which a circulation of oil is secured, resulting in the constant, uniform, continuous and eflicient c lubrication of the engine cranks.
The invention consists in the novel arrangement, construction and combination of parts as hereinafter more particularly described and claimed.
One sheet of drawings accompanies this application as a part thereof, in which like reference characters indicate like parts throughout.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 shows an automobile engine in side elevation with the improved crank case closure in section.
Figure 2 is an upper plan view of the crank case closure.
Figure 3 is a transverse vertical section taken on the line 33 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a transverse vertical section taken on the line 4l l of Figure 2.
In accordance with my invention, an auxiliary crank case closure 1 is provided in the nature of a pan having a flange extending around its entire upper edge, adapted to be secured under the bottom opening of the crank case by means of bolts 2. This improved closure pan 1 is provided with a plurality of transverse partitions 3, arranged in spaced pairs and between each of the said spaced pairs of partitions 3 and supported thereby is a supplementary ele vated arcuate floor a which forms the bottom of a splash pocket. Holes 6 are provided centrally of each of the elevated floors 4 and holes 5 are provided centrally and under floors 4; in each of the partitions 8. Midway between the two rear pairs of partitions is provided a drain pipe 7, the open mouth of which is arranged at a height level with the top of partition 8. This drain pipe 7 is provided on its lower end with a drain cock 8 and connects with pipes 9 and 10 leading to the fly wheel. casing so that oil overflowing from crank case pan 1 through drain pipe 7, will be led into the ATENT OFFICE.
fly wheel casing adjacent the bottom of the fly wheel from whence the revolution of the fly wheel will elevate the oil, which will be taken off of said fly wheel as by a scraper 11 and ledback through oil pipe 12 and fed into the crank casing at its forward end, the stream of oil being here indicated by dotted lines 13 and small arrows, A three-way cock 10' is preferably interposed between the pipes 9 and 10 for purposes readily understood.
The connecting rod journals on the engine cranks are adapted to dip between the adjacent pairs of walls 3 into the oil above floors 4, thus securing the necessary lubrication.
By means of the structure thus described it will be apparent that the crank case pan 1 will be kept filled with oil to the level of the top of drain pipe 7 and that there will be a continuous flow of oil there through with a continuous feed into each of the compartments between partitions 3, thus providing for a constant and uniform supply of clean oil for each of the connecting rod journals.
Having thus described my invention I claim:
1. The combination of an oil pan having a plurality of transverse partitions arranged in pairs, elevated arcuate floors arranged between and supported by said adjacent pairs of partitions, and a drain pipe having its open mouth level with the top of said partitions, said partitions and floors having openings to permit passage of oil.
2. The combination of an oil pan having a splash pocket elevated above the bottom of the pan, and a drain pipe rising from the bottom of said pan to a point above the bottom of the splash pocket, said pocket being in open communication with the pan below the aforementioned point of the drain pipe.
3. The combination with a gasoline engine of an oil pan of the structuredefined in claim 1, means for conveying the oil from said drain pipe to the interior of the fly wheel casing of the engine adjacent its bottom and means for taking the oil from the level with the top of said partitions, means 10 for conveying the oil from said drain pipe to the interior of the fly Wheel casing of the engine and means for taking the oil from the fly Wheel of the engine and conveying said oil to the front end of the crank case 15 of the engine.
