Specification of Letters Patent. i
Application filed January 18, 1922. Serial No. 520,02e.
To all whom it may concern Be it vknown that I, I-IoRAon W. HUcHns,
place.
The primary object of the invention is to construct a wire ladder which is' strong and durable in construction and will be extremely efficient in operation, and which is constructed of wire members so twisted together as to produce the greatest strength at the points desired,
Another object of the invention is to provide a wire ladder which is exceedingly flexible, without departing in any respect from the rigidity of the rung members comprising a portion of the ladder.
With these and other objects in view,
which will be apparent from the description, my invention resides in the novel combination, construction and operation of parts hereinafter described and claimed and taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, which form a part thereof, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of the prefer red form of ladder;
Figure 2, a side elevation thereof;
Figure 3, a horizontal section on the line 33 of Figure 1;
Figure 4, a plan view illustrating the manner of assembling the various elements comprising the ladder;
Figure 5, a detailed elevation of a modified form of the invention; and
Figure 6, an end elevation of the modification shown in Figure 5.
In the preferred form the invention comprises side members 1 and 2, and rung members 3 formed of heavy spring wire twisted in order to ensure the desired strength and rigidity, as illustrated in Figure 1. The ladder is formed in detail of wires 4: and 5 which are disposed in parallel spaced relation and on which are laid integral, substantially rectangular wire members 6 having upturned end portions 7 and 8, sothat when the portion 6 is laid on the wires a and 5 the end 7 of one portion will abut the end 8 of the adjacent portion. and the sides of the members 6 will lie in contact with the wires at and 5. The adjacent ends 7 and 8 of the respective portions 6 are then twisted upon one another, as illus trated in- Figure 1, to provide a durable and strong rung which, owing to the upturned end formation of the portions 7 and 8, will be spaced away from the body of the ladder the required distance, as best illustrated in Figure 2. In like manner, the wires 4 and 5 and the side portions of the members 6 are twisted upon one another to strengthen the side members of the entire ladder.
In the modified form illustrated in Figures 5 and 6, an additional wire section 9' is inserted between the adjacent ends 7 and 8 of the various members 6 to assist in te te "nu yae, 192
strengthening the'rung members. Thiswire 9 is joined at its opposite ends by suitable fastening to the wires 45' and 5 and is bent upwardly and outwardly whereby it may be twisted. in with the adjacent ends of the rung sections to produce a. greatly strengthened rung member, as illustrated in Figures 5 and 6. While I have illustrated and described certain details and materials which enter into the construction ,and'operation of the invention, I desire it to be understood that I do not intend to limit myself to these, but that any such may be used as will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed. I claim: 1. A wire ladder comprising side members, a plurality of substantially looped wire members disposed on and. extending between said side members, and having portions thereof extending along said side members, portions of adjacent pairs of said looped members being twisted upon each other to form rungs, and the portions of the said looped members extending along the side members being twisted thereon.
2. A wire. ladder comprising parallel spaced wires, substantially rectangular wire sections disposed on said wires, the ends of said sections abutting one upon another, and the sides thereof extending along said wires, the abutting ends of said sections being twisted upon one another and the sides ofsaid sections being twisted upon said wires to form the ladder.
3. A wire ladder comprising parallel spaced wires, substantially rectangular Wire sections disposed on said wires, and having their ends extending upwardly and laterally from said wires, and arranged in abutting relation, the abutting ends of said sections being twisted upon each other in lateral spaced relation from said wires to provide rungs, and the side portions of said sections being twisted upon said wires to provide side members for the ladder. 10
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
HORACE W. HUGHES.
