ATTORNEY. I
Patented Nov. 4, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ANTHONY Gr. SIEBENLIST, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNIIAS- SIGNMENTS, T MILCOR STEEL COMPANY, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN, A CORPO- BATION OF DELAWARE RIB GLII Application filed October 21, 1927.
, ing metallic lathing to structural supporting or framing members such as I-beams, or the like.
The object of the invention is to provide a rib clip of this character which may be easily and conveniently applied and secured to the structural supporting members and connected to or inter-engaged with the metallic lathing for firmly and securely anchor- 7 ing or fastening the metallic lathing to the structural supporting members.
Another object of the invention is to provide a rib clip having these advantages and capacities and which is of extremely simple and yet strong and rugged construction and which is made up of separable parts to simplify the .manufacture of the clip and to make it easy and less expensive to ship or transport the same.
Other objects and advantages reside in certain novel features of the construction, arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary view partly in 7 section and partly in elevation showing a rib clip employed for securing metallic lathing to the underside of an I-beam supporting member for use in connection with a ceiling; Figure 2 is a perspective view of the rib clip just prior to assembly with an I-beam or other supporting member;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view similar to Figure l but showing therib clip as positioned when used for anchoring metallic lathing to the top side of anVI-beam supporting member, as for instance when constructing a floor, the strap and tie-wire being shown as originally positioned prior to the bending and twisting operation illustrated in'Figure 1; and
Figure 4 is a sectional View on line H of Figure 3.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 designates a structural supporting member Serial No. 227,672.
shown as comprising an I-beam but, of course, any type of flanged structural supporting member or framing member may be used. To such structural supporting members metallic lathing, designated generally at 2, is to be applied and may be a part ofa floor, ceiling, partition, or the like. Figure 1 shows the lathing as applied in a ceiling and Figure 3 shows it as applied for use in a floor. The metallic lathing is of the usual construction and has the usual mesh or open work expanded metal structure M between intermediate ribs R.
The rib clip of the present invention comprises flat metallic strap 5 having a hookshaped end 6 designed to he slipped around a flange of the I-beam as illustrated in Figure '3. The opposite end of'the'strap 5, although originally straight, is adapted to be hammered or otherwise bent around another flangeof the I-beam as indicated at 7' in Figure 1, the strap being constructed of metal which is sufliciently bendable, or resilient to permit of this shaping of the end 7 after the strap has been associated with the I-beam and yet sufiiciently stiff and heavy to retainits final shape whereby the strap is firmly and securely fastened and held associated with the I-beam. V
A separate tie-wire designated generally at 10 is provided and preferably is of U shaped form being made up of a body portion 11' and legs 12. Intermediate its ends the strap 5 is provided with spaced openings 13 designed to receivethe legs 12' of thetie-wire 10 with the body portion 11 of the tie-wire extending across the space between the openings 13. This positions the body portion 11 between" the strap 5 and the I-beam in the as sembly and the legs 12 of the tie-wire project through the openings between meshes of the expanded metal on the opposite sides of the rib R of the metallic lathing. The portions of the legs 10 which project beyond the metallic lathing are thenintertwisted as shown in Figure 1 to fasten the legs 10 together in encircling and securing relation around a rib of the lathing. This firmly and securely anchors the lathing to the structural supporting member and is equally effective irrespective of whether it is used in a ceiling or floor construction, or otherwise.
By constructing the rib clip of a separate strap and tie-wire the problem of manufacture and the expense of shipping is greatly reduced as the straps and tie-wires may be shipped in separate bundles. Along with these advantages the tie-wire and strap are completely interlocked and securely inter-engaged in the assembly, and the construction is 'subh that it is a simple and easy matter to firmly anchor the clip to the structural supporting member and to firmly secure it to the metallic lathing.
The invention claimed is 1. A rib clip for securing metallic lathing to a structural supporting member comprising a strap adapted to be attached to the structural supporting member, and provided with a pair of spaced openings intermediate its ends, and a separate tie-wire of substantially U-shaped form having its legs extended through said openings, and its body portion engaged with the strap between the openings, the legs being adapted to be extended around the rib of the metallic lathing and to be intertwisted to secure the lathing on the strap.
2. A rib clip for securing metallic lathing to a flanged structural supporting member comprising a flat strap having a hooked end adapted to be engaged with one flange of the supporting member and having its other end adapted to be bent around into engagement with another flange of the supporting member, said strap having openings intermediate its ends, and a separate substantially U- shaped tie-wire having portions extended through the openings of the straps, a portion confined between the strap and the supporting member, and intertwisted portions encircling and having securing engagement with the rib of the metallic lathing.
3. A rib clip for securing lathing to a struc tural supporting member comprising a flat strap adapted to be bent to conform to the contour of the supporting member and a separate tie wire carried by said strap andadapted to have securing engagement with the lathing, said flat strap and said tie wire having cooperating means, for preventing lateral and pivotal movement of the tie wire with respect thereto when the strap is securedto the supporting member to thereby firmly secure the lathing to the supporting member.
In witness whereof, I hereto afliX my signature.
ANTHONY G. SIEBENLIST.
