To all who 122, it may concern Be it known that I, LOUIS Gszosno, a citizen of Foland, residing at Auburn. county of Cayuga, and State ofNew York, have in vented certain new and usefulimprovements in Rail Joints, of which the follovdng is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in railway rails, and particularly to 'improt ments in rail joints, and it is the principal object of the invention to provide a rail joint which will positively, connect the ends of two adjoining rails in a novel manner.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a rail oint comprising anovel construction of the fish-plates for firmly connecting the adjoining ends of two rails to prevent positively a loosening of the connection under the pounding of the wheels of a train of cars passing over the rail heads.
These and other objects andadvantages 01 my invention will become more fully known as the description thereof proceeds, and will then be more specifically pointed out in the appended claims. Y

The adjoining ends of two rails and 11 provided with the customary heads and foot flanges 13 are each provided with two square holes 1% for the passage of the dove tailed ends 15 of a plurality oi locking bolts 16 which are driven from'one side of the Specification of Letters Eatent.

If it is desired to form a joint between the meeting ends of the two rails 10 and 11, the ends 15 of the bolts 16 are passed through the openings 14 in the webs of the rails until fish plate 11' engages the rail webs on one side thereof. Then fish plate 20 is engaged with the rail webs on the opposite side so that the ends 15 will enter sockets 19. As previously the dogs 22 have been placed i recesses 21 and locking members 2 1 in sockets :23 from above and below, while ele ments 25 are introduced into holes 26 with their bevelled ends in engagement with the meeting ends of member 24, the fish plate 20 will now be hammered into place so that dogs 32 will engage with their upper ends the underside 01' the rail heads 12 and will he "forced into engagement with the ends 15. The engagement ot the inner ends of ele ments 25 with the rail web will force these elements into engagement with the meeting ends of locking members 2 1 which will be driven asunder with their outer ends into engagement with sockets 27 in the underside of the rail heads 12 and st clrets 28 inthe upper faces of the rail flanges 13, so that an extremely secure connection between the two rails 10 and 1.1 is established.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patentof the United States is .1. A rail joint of the class described, comprising two fish plates adapted to engage opposite sides of the webs of two adjoining perforated rail ends, bolts passed through one of said fish plates, dove-tailed ends on said bolts adapteril to be passed through the perforations in said rail ends into engagement with sockets in the second of said fish plates, said sockets connnunicating with upper reycsscs, means slidabl held in these re cusses for engaging the dove-tailed ends of said bolts by engagement with the rail head when said second fish plate is hammered home, andi'neans. for locking said second fish plate automatically tothe rail head and the flange upon the ei'igagement of said bolts and said sliding means.

A rail joint of the class described, comprising two fish plates adapted'to engage opposite sides of the Webs of two adjoining perforated rail ends, bolts having dovetailed shaped ends integral with one of said lish plates adapted to be passed through the perforations of said rail ends into sockets in the second of said fish plates, sliding blocks in recesses in the upper edge of said second fish plate communicating with said sockets and adapted to engage the underface of the rail heads to be driven into engagement with said dove-tail ends of said bolts when said second fish plate is hammered into web engaging position, said second fish plate provided with vertical and transverse channels, means in said vertical channels adapted to engage recesses in the rail heads and flanges, and means in said transverse channels adapted to engage said first named means to lock it in position uponthe hammering home of said second fish plate.
3. In a rail joint of the class described, the combination of two fish plates, locking; bolts on the inner face of one of said fish plates adapted to be passed through the rails into engagement with the second fish plate, said second fish plate recessed in its upper edge, sliding blocks in said recesses adapted to engage the underside of the rail head to be forced into engagement with the ends of said locking bolts, pair of locking bolts having inner bevelled meeting ends movably disposed in a vertical channel of said second fish plate, and an operating member having a bevelled end adapted to be passed through a transverse opening in said second fish plate into engagement with the meeting ends of said bolts to drive their outer ends into recesses in the lower face of the rail head and the upper face of the rail flanges to lock the parts in their adjusted position upon the hammeringof said second fish plate into engagement with the rail web.
