To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, LEOPOLD C. GIERYM- SKI and CASIMIR BoHDANovIoz, citizens of the United States, residing at New Britain,

in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful' Improvements in Rope or Cable Conmotorsand Grips, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

. The pulley is engaged by one end of the cable or rope or clothes-line, so that by pullingon the end of the rope, the gripping or clinching device may be moved through the action, ot the rope or cable moving in a direction and over the pulley.

By the arrangement and construction of a gripping and coupling device as herein illustrated and described, it is very easy to connect, couple or grip the opposite ends of a clothes-line, or the opposite ends of a cable or rope used for other purposes.

A further purpose is the provision of an improved clinching or gripping device movably mounted in the side walls of a plate and provided with a centrally arranged enlarged or bulged portion, to insure a firm clinch or grip onthe rope or cable, when engaged between the device and one edge wall of the plate.

While the design and construction at present illustrated and set forth are deemed preferable, it is obvious that as a result of adapted for use in connection with a reduction of the invention to a more practical form for commercial purposes, the invention may be susceptible of changes, and the right to these changes is claimed, provided they are comprehended within the scope of what is claimed. I

The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as will behereinafter settorth, shown in the drawings and claimed.

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a coupling and gripping devicemay be ap plied to other ropes or cables used for other purposes.- This coupling or gripping device comprises a plate 2, which is U-shaped,

though it may be otherwise constructed and v shaped, and the opposite side walls of the plate are provided with registering slots 3 audit. In fact there are two slots 3 and two slots 4, and engaging the registering s1ots13 is a headed pin 5, the heads acting to prevent endwise'movement of the pin. The end portions 6 ofthe slots 3 are enlarged, as shown at 7, in order to} permit the pin 5 to be inserted, and after being inserted, the pin 5 may be removed toward andengage the opposite ends of the slots 3, in which case thegheads of the pin prevent the pin "from moving axially. One end of the cable,

or clothes-line is engaged about the pin 5, between the opposite walls, ofthe plate 2, and the terminal of the rope or cable is wrapped or bound to the body of the cable or'rope by means of heavy cord 8, to insure a secure connection of the cable to thepin 5.

shown at 11, and its heads 12 areof clothes-line, though it is obvious that the the same diameter as the enlarged central portion 11), act to prevent axial or endwise movement of the roller 10. The purpose of constructing the slots 4; on an inclination or at an angle to the wall 9 of the plate 2, is to enable the roller or clinching device 10 to cooperate with the wall 9, for the purpose of clamping the rope or cable 1, that is to say when the roller or gripping device 10 is moved in a direction toward the wall 9; The end portions 13 of the slots 4c are enlarged as shown at 14:, of a diameter sufiiciently to permit either one of the heads 12, and the enlarged. portion 11 of the roller or pin 10 to pass therethrough, for the purpose of arranging the pin or roller in the slots. After the pin orroller has been disposed in the slots 4, andmoved in a direction toward the smaller ends of the slots, the heads 12 act to prevent axial movement of the roller.

This roller or pin 10, as well as the pin 5 are placed in engagement with the slots 3 and 4.- before journaling a pin 15 in bearings of the side walls of the plate 2. At the same time the pin 15 is mountedin the bearings of the side walls of the plate 2, a roller or pulley 16 is journaled upon the pin, whereby one end of the rope or cable 1 may pass over the pulley or roller 16. c It will be noted that the roller or pin 16 is of a diameter, so that its flanges overlie the marginal edges of the enlarged portions 7 and 14 of the slots 3- and 4. Obviously this overlapping constructionof the pulley or roller 16 relatively to the enlarged portions 7 and 14 of the slots 3 and 4 prevents the pins 5 and 10 from being removed from the slots, after they have once been mounted in position. In fact the only way to remove the pin 5,. or the roller or pin 10, is to tile or otherwise cut off one of the heads of the pin 5, permitting the pulley or roller 16 to be removed, as well as allowing a detachment of the pulley or wheel 16.

In Figure. 5, the corresponding edges of p the slots 4 are provided with teeth 17, which are engaged by the teeth 18 of the headed pin 19, enabling the roller or pin 19 to retate in the slots 4, without slipping, and thereby securely clamp the cable or rope against the wall 9 of theplate 2.

ll hile it is obvious that by pulling upon the extremity 20 of the cable or rope, in order to tiglitenthe cable, it is also possible to pull the extremity 20, to cause the roller or pin 10 to disengage from the cable or rope, that is to say if the rope or cable is sufficiently slack to permit it to give, whereby movement may be imparted to the pin 10 in the direction of the arrow at. In fact when the'rope or cable is pulled, it is possible to start the pin or roller 10 toward the enlarged ends of" the slots 4:, then the rope or cable 1 is capable of movement, or capable ot'being tightened or loosened. The

present form coupling and gripping device may be used in connection with various ropes, cables or the like, whether they are used as clothes-lines or whether they are used for other purposes.

The invention having been set forth, what is claimed is 1. A coupling and gripping device com prising a Udormed body, to one end of which one end of a rope or cable is permanently attached, said body at its other end having cammed slots inclined relatively to one wall of the body, a clinching or gripping member movably mounted in said slots, and adapted to clamp the other end of said rope between it and said wall of the body, a pulley journaled in the side walls of the body and over hich one end of the rope engages, w ien pulling the rope to cause the gripping members to clamp against the rope.

2. A, coupling and grippingdevice comprising a U-tormed body, to one end of which one end of a rope or cable is per1nanently attached, said body at its other end having cammed slots inclined relatively to 'onewall of the body, a clinching or gripping member movably mounted in said slots, and adapted to clamp the other end of said rope between it and said wall of the body, a pulley journaled in the side walls of the body and over which one end of the ropeengages, when pulling the rope to cause the gripping members to clamp against the rope, corresponding ends of said slots being enlarged to permit the clinching or gripping member to be inserted transversely of and within the slots, the arrangement and construction of said pulley relatively to the enlarged ends of the slots being such as to overlap said enlarged ends to prevent the removal of the clinching or gripping device after it has been arranged in the slots.

3. In a coupling andgripping device, a U- t'ormed body having means at one end thereof to effect a permanent attachment of one end of a rope thereto, the other end of the body having cammed slots inclined relatively to a transverse wall of the body, a headed roller pin mounted in the slots and adapted to be engaged by the other end of the rope, the tension upon which causes the roller to move toward the ends of the slots nearest the transverse wall, to cause the roller to grip the rope between it and the transverse wall, corresponding ends of the slots being engaged to permit the headed roller pin to be arranged in the slots, and rope engaging means journaled between the sides of the U-formed body and overlapping the enlarged portions of the slots to prevent the removal of the headed roller pin after the same has once been inserted.

In a coupling and grippingv device, a U- formed body having means at one endthereof to effect a permanent attachment of one end of a rope thereto, the other end of the body having cammed slots inclined relatively to a transverse wall of the body, a headed roller pin mounted in the slots'and adapted to be engaged by the other end of the rope, the tension upon which causes the roller to move toward the ends of the slots nearest the transverse wall, to cause the roller to grip the rope between it and the transverse wall, corresponding ends of the slots being engaged to permit the headed roller pin to be arranged in the slots, and rope engaging means journaled between the sides of the U- formed body and overlapping the enlarged portions of the slots to prevent the removal of the headed roller pin after the same has once been inserted, said roller pin having gear teeth engagement connections with certain of the edges of said slots, to insure a positive rolling action of the roller pin, to cause it to clamp against the rope.

5. In a coupling and gripping device, a U- formed body having means at one end thereof to effect a permanent attachment of one end of a rope thereto, the other end of the body having cammed slots inclined relatively to a transverse wall of the body,a headed roller pin mounted in the slots and adapted to be engaged by the other end of the rope, the tension upon which causes the roller to move toward the ends of the slots-nearest the transverse wall, to causethe roller to grip the rope between it and the transverse wall, corresponding ends of the slots being engaged to permit the headed roller pin to be arranged in the-slots, and rope engaging means journaled between the sides of the U-formed body and overlapping the enlarged portions of the slots to prevent the removal of the headed roller pin after the same has once been inserted, said roller pin having gear teeth engagement connections with certain of the edges of said slots, to insure a positive rolling action of the roller pin, to cause it to clamp against the rope, the central portion of the roller pin having binding engagement of the rope, when the roller pin is moved in a direction toward the transverse wall.
