CORE-TAKING DEVICE.
e To all whom t ma/y concern:
Be it known that I, REDUS D. Donne, a
`citizen of the United States, residing at a device of the character described adapted e show upper and to take cores, or samples of the formation in drilling wells.
With the above and other objects in view the invention has particular relation to certain novel features of construction, operation and arrangement of parts, an example of which is given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 shows a vertical sectional view of the upper part of the device in position to be withdrawn from the stem.
Figure 2 shows a similar view of the lower part thereof, and
Figures 3 and l show sectional views of the device as anchored in the stem.
In the drawings, the numerals 1 and 2 lbwer sections of a tubular stem, the former of which is screwed into the latter. The lower end of the section 2 has a connecting ni ple 3 threaded into it, and to this nipple tie core forming bit et is attached, having a central opening 5 to admitthe core. passageways 6, G to conduct the water to the cutting blades of the bitand the wall of the opening 5 has an annular groove 7 wherein the lower end of the tubular anchor 8 rests. rlhe walls of this anchor taper downwardly, forming a tapering seat for the core engaging dogs 9.` 'lhese dogs have their inner faces transversal corrugated or toothed. Preferably-four ogs are provided, and surroundin them is an ex ansible band 10 to which they are attache Each dog has a push rod 11 attached to its upper end, said rods workin through outwardl inclined bearings in t e anchor, and attac ed to the upper end of each rod there is a flexible ringer 12 whose upper free end presses against the tubular core barrel 13. The anchor .is connected to the lower end of this barrel and the upper end of said'barrel is .attached to the nut 14 which is threaded onto the lower end of the swivel 15. Surroundl This bit has the usual water] Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug. v29, 1922.
Application led September 18, 1920. Serial No. 411,059.
ing this swivel is a tubular housing l16 between the lower end of which and said nut are the anti-friction bearings 17. The upper end of the housing 16 is screwed into the lower end `of the tubular anchor support 18, and the upper end of the swivel 15 is formed into an enlarged head 19 which has a swivelingconnection with said support 18. lfivoted wlthin said su port are the bladelike anchors 20, 20 whic work through side slots 2'1, 21 therein and whose upper ends are formed with u wardly projecting fingers 22, 22. Within t e up er end of the support 18 there is screwe a` land 23 through which the stem 24 of the p unfrei 25 works. rl`his plunger is of the form ol an inverted cone, and surrounding its stem is a coil s ring 26 which is interposed between the p unger and gland.
Threaded onto the reduced upper end of the gland 23 there is the tubular housing 2i' having the side slots 28, 28, and in it there is cylindrical' block 29 havingl dee. elongated recesses 30, 30 aligned with tie slots 28 and in which the anchor blades 31, 31 are pivoted at their lower ends, said blades working through the slots 28. This block has a depending stem 32 which has a bearing in the gland 23, and surrounding this stem and interposed between said gland and block there is a coil spring 33. The blades 31 have long outwardly diverging bearin Ys 34, 34, through which the pins 35, 35, anc iored in` the housing 27, pass.
Threaded into the up er end of the housing 2? there is a tubu ar release head 36, conical shaped in general contour, and extending through it there is a stem 3T, formed integrally with the block 30. The upper end of the stem is formed with an annular shoulder 38 formed for the purpose of engaging with the dogs 39, 39 which are hinged to the lower end of the tubing 40. and held in engagement .with said shoulder by means of a pull spring 41 attached to said dogs.
The device is first assembled, as shown in Figures 1 and 2, and let down into the bore. With the bit t resting on the bottom et the bore the anchor 8 will seat in the Lgroove 7' and the pressure of the spring 26 will force the plunger 25 between the fingers 22, forcing the anchor blades 20, 20 through the slots 21 and into engagement with the u per end of the connecting nipple 3.
eanwhile the upper ends o; the anchor blades 31 have passed below the lower end of the section 1 and thereupon'the spring 33 the head 36 and the shoulder 38 will haveseated thereon. vSaid dogs will vbe thereby spread apart out of engagement with said shoulder and they, together with the tubing 40, may now be withdrawn.
The stem and bit are now rotated in the usual way, but the swivel- 15, and the appendants thereof, may remain stationary. As the core is formed it passes 'up through the opening 5 of the bit, and between the dogs 9 into the lcore barrel 13. A suitable fishing tol, offwell known construction, may now be let down into the stem and engaged with the shoulder 38. An upward pull will operate to carry the entire mechanism within vthe drill stem upwardly, theV blades 31 being released from the lower end of the section 2 by the action of the pins 35 in the diverging bearings 34. At the same time lthe upper ends ofxthe push rods 11 will strike against'the lower end of the nipple 3 and be forced downwardly' and inwardly, forcing the dogs inwardly into engagement with the coreyand thel entire device may then be pulled out from the drill stem, carrying the core with it. v p VWhatlclaimiszy 1. A sample taking device, including a Itubular stem,a core-forming bit attached thereto provided with a 'centralfpassagewa a core barrel within the stem, releasab e means anchoring said' barrel within said stem, separate core-enga ing dogs depending from the barrel, sai -dogs being internally toothed, and aligned with said pas-v sageway, through which the core formed by said bit passes into'said stem, and means for contracting said core-engaging dogs, and
:holding the same against. the core during the withdrawal of the barrel from said stem,
said-core 'engaging dogs and barrel being rotatable relative to the anchoring means.
2. A sample taking device, including a stem, a core-forming bit, provided with a central passageway, attached to Said stem and adapted to be' rotated by the stem, and formed with annular groove, 'a core barrel within. therstem and aligned above said passageway and independently rotatable relativel t0 the stem, releasable means anchoring said'barrel within the stem, a downwardly converging anchor attached tothe l lower end of the core barrel whose lower end rests in said groove, core-engaging dogs depending from said barrel and between which the core passes from the bit intothe barrel,
vsaid dogs being located within said anchor and bearing against the converging walls thereof, and means for contracting said dogs against the core during the withdrawal of said barrel from the stem.
3.vv rllhe combination with a tubular stem of a core-termin bit attached to the lower end thereof, provided with acentral passage- .way and adapted to be 'rotated by the stem,
a downwardly converging anchor within the bit, core-engaging dogs located within the anchor in alignment with the passageway thereof and rotatable independently of the stem, releasable means to which said dogs are attached and by means of which they are anchored in position, saidv means being removable from said stem, and means for foro ing said dogs downwardly in said anchor thereby contracting said dogs into engagement with said core, said contracting means being actuated bythe withdrawal of said an?w choring means from the stem.
4. rlhe combination witha tubular. stem or" a core-forming bit attached to the lower end thereof, provided with a central passageway, and an annular internal groove and' adapted to be rotated by the stem', releasable anchoring means adapted to be let down into and withdrawn from said stem,l a swivel depending from said means and independently rotatable with respect thereto, a core barrel depending from said swivel, a downwardly converging tubular Vanchor depending from the barrel and resting in said groove as a bearing, core-engaging dogs arranged within said anchor and between'.
which the, corepasses into said barrel, and
means for forcing said dogs downwardly in the anchor thereby contracting them into engagement -with said core, during the withdrawal of the barrel from the stem.
ln testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
