IMPROVEMENT IN STRAW-CUTTERS,
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,726, dated September 9, 1873 applicaiion filed March 21, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT A. BASH, of Petersburg, in the county of Dinwiddie and in the State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Straw-Gutter; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a straw-cutter, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which represents a perspective view of my straw-cutter.
A represents the box, supported at the front end by a frame, B, and at the rear end by legs 0 0. Over the front end of the box A is a board, D, inclined on its under side, as shown. On the frame B, on each side of the mouth of the box A, is secured an upright bar, E, having lugs at each end on the inner side, so that a space will be left between the bars and the mouth of the box, in which the cutting-knife is to move. To the outside of the bars E E is stop to the straw.
which the knife is operated, one end of said lever being pivoted to the frame B, and one end of the knife I is pivoted to said lever. The other end of the knife is provided with a headed pin, a, or screw, which passes through a slotted inclined bar, J, attached on the opposite side of the frame B. I
WVhen one end of the knife is raised by the lever the other end slides up the incline, and when the lever is moved down both ends of the knife are moved down, and at the same time the knife is moved endwise, making a perfect draw-cut.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the extended and slotted plate J, secured to one side of the frame AB, the lever H, pivoted to the opposite side of the frame, the knife I, pivoted to the lever and moving in the slot in the plate, the guidebars E E, and the gage-plate G attached thereto, all constructed and operated as and for the purposes set forth.
