Be t known that I, JACOB E. /VIN'rERs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Taft,
in the county of Kern and State of California, have invented new and useful Improve ments in Clutch and Brake Control Mocha nism, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a combined clutch and brake for the sand reel of a well drilling rig, and has for its object to provide a driving connection between the band wheel of the rig and the shaft of the sand reel so arranged that the sand reel may be either rotated through the driving connection, or an effective braking action may be applied thereto.
it is a further object of the invention to provide an improved driving connection between the sand reel and the band wheel of a well drilling rig which will be positive in its action and which may be readily shifted to inoperative position'to prevent unnecessary rotation of the parts when the sand reel is idle.
Further objects of the invention will be readily understood from the following description of the accompanying drawingsin which;

In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated a portion of a well'drilling'rig comprising a usual base 1 upon which is mounted a band wheel 2 and 'a sand reel 3 fixed upon a shaft 4 journaled in suitable bearings 5'. The band wheel is-adaptedto be rotated in usual manner through the cable 6. The shaft upon which the sand reel is, fixed is adapted to be rotated through a driving connection from the band wheel 1n order to wind the sand line upon its reel, or to have braking action applied thereto during reverse rotation of the shaft when the1 sand line is being unwound from its ree The above described mechanism may comprise a driving connection journaled upon the shaft 4 and a shaft 6 having operating connections at its respective ends with the band wheel and with said driving connectron. As an instance of this arrangement, the. shaft 6 is shown as journaled in bearings 7 and having a bevel gear-wheel 8 at its end which is adjacent the shaft 4:. A bevel gear wheel 9 is keyed upon the opposite end of shaft 6 as by a key 10, this bevel gear being arranged to be shifted longitudinally of the shaft 6 so as to be moved to or from meshing engagement with a bevel gear wheel 11 fixed upon the band wheel 2. By this arrangement the shaft 6 may be rotated or allowed to remain idle by shifting the gear 9 into or out of engagement with the gear 11.
The mechanism for thus longitudinally shifting the gear 9 may comprise a yoke 12 having its ends secured to opposite sides of a collar 13 received in a suitable recess formed in the hub 1d of the gear 9 so that shifting of the yoke, through the rod 15 provided with the hand lever 16, will cause the desired longitudinal movement of the gear 9.
The driving connection journaled upon the shaft 4 and engaged by the pinion 8 comprises a bevel gear wheel 17 meshing with the pinion 8 and loosely journaled upon the shaft 4. A friction wheel 18 is fixed upon shaftt as by a key 19' and a clutch is provided between the gear wheel 17 and the friction wheel 18 for causing rotation of the friction wheel and the shaftd withthe gear wheel 1?. A brake is also'provided upon thefriction wheel 18 for providing a braking actionfor the shaft 4. Means are provided for selectively engaging either the clutch or the brake mechanism with the friction wheel 18, such means, preferably, comprising a friction band forming the brake, and a band carried by the gear wheel 17 to form the clutch, respectively.
The friction band forming the clutch mechanism, preferably, comprises two; bands 19 and 20 received around the friction wheel and having their meeting ends connected so as to tighten or loosen the two sections of the band upon the friction reel. As an instance of this arrangement one end of each of the bands 19 andQO, say the end 21, is secured to a longitudinally extending shaft 22 journaled upon the gear wheel 17, and the adjacent end of the other band, say the end 23, is'adapted to be moved toward and from the end 21 of the other band by a rock arm 24 extending laterally from the shaft 22 and connected to the end 23 of the friction band.
The end 21 of the friction band issecured to shaft 22 by a yoke 25 journaled on the end of said shaft and having abolt 26 projecting' therefrom through an upstanding lug 27 on the end 21 of the friction band, the bolt, preferably, having threaded engagement with the lug as shown at 28 and a jam nut 29 being provided on the end of the bolt. The connection between the end 23 of the friction band and the rock arm 24 may include a longitudinally extending bearing pin 30 projecting from the rock arm and having the end 23 of the friction band looped around the same to provide a bearing connection for this end of the friction band. A plate 31 may connect the outer ends of the bearing pin 30 and the shaft 22, the pin and shaft being shown as extending through said "plate and having suitable nuts 32 thr eaded upon, the outer ends thereof to retain said plate in position.
The friction bands may be adjusted through bolt 26 to. position the end 21 of one of the bands relative to the end 23 of the other band, and by turning the shaft 22 the end 23 ofuoneof the friction bands will the friction wheel the friction wheel will be caused to rotate with the gear wheel 17. As an instance of this arrangement, radially extending lugs'33 may be provided upon the gearwheel 1.7 in each pair of which the end of a shaft 22 is iournaled.
The shafts 22 at the'opposite'adjacent ends of the friction bands 19 and 20 are arranged to be simultaneously rocked for tightening or loosening the friction bands upon the friction wheel. For this purpose a rock arm 34 projects laterally from the shaft 22,'preferably, between the bearing lugs 33, and the ends of these rock arms are pivotally connected to links 35, as shown at 36, said links being in turn pivoted to arms 37, as shown at 38. The arms 37 extend longitudinally through the gear, wheel 17 and are suitably pivoted thereon, as shown at 39, the'ends of said arms being pivoted at 40 to links 41 which are in turn pivoted to a collar 42 slidable upon the shaft 4, assh'own at 43. These link connectionsbe'tween the collar 42" and the rock arms 34 'areso arranged that axial movement of the collar will reversely rock the shafts thereby tightening or loosening the friction bands upon the friction wheel depending, upon the direction in which the collar 42 is shifted.
The means for shifting collar 42 along the shaft 4 may comprise a yoke 44 having its ends received about said collar and pro vided with a collar 45 received in a suitable groove formed in the collar 42, so that the collar 42 will be shifted with the yoke 44. The yoke is shown as provided with an operating rod 46 which is pivoted intermedi ate of its ends to a bracket 47, so that movement in opposite directions of the end of the rod 46 will shift the yoke and the collar 42 along the shaft 4. The rod 46 may be thus j thereby engaging the driving gear 17 with the friction wheel 18 and the shaft 4.
The brakingmeans provided for the shaft 4 comprises a friction band 51 received around friction wheel 18, a flange '52 being, preferably, provided upon the rim of the friction wheel to separate the clutch friction bands from the brake friction band. The brake friction band is adapted to be tightened upon the friction wheel when the clutch friction bands are released and to be loosened upon the friction wheel when the clutch friction bands are tightened thereon, so that either the clutch or the brake may be operatively engaged with thefriction wheel. For this purpose the brake friction band 51 is shown as having one of its ends 53 adjustably secured to the main frame of the rig, this adjustable connection, preferably, comprising a lug 54 upon the end of the friction band through which is received a bolt 55 on a bracket of the main frame, a nut 56 being provided upon the end of thebolt for adjust-ing" the ln 54 and the end of the friction band to which it is attached along the bolt 55. v
The opposite end 57 of the brake friction band is connected to an operating shaft 58 for moving this end of the friction band toward or away from the opposite end, for tightening or loosening the friction band.
As an instance of this arrangemenhthe end 57 of the band may comprise a loop 59 received around an off-set crank portion 60 of the shaft .58, the latter being jonrnaled in suitable bearings 61 and provided with; an outwardly extending rock arm 62.
Means are provided for rocking the arm 62 so as to tighten or loosen the brake friction band, such means, preferably, comprising an operating rod 63 pivotally connected at its respective ends to the end of the rock arm 62, as shown at 6 and to the operating rod 50, as shown at 65, the parts being SOl arranged that when the operating rod 50 is shifted in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 1 for tightening the clutch bands upon the friction wheel the operating rod 63 will be shifted in the same direction to loosen the brake band upon the friction wheel, and when the operating rod 50 is shifted in the reverse direction to loosen the clutch bands, the operating rod 63 also moving in the reverse direction will rock shaft 58 so as to tighten the brake band upon the friction Wheel.
The operating rod 50 is provided with an operating lever 66 pivoted at its lower end to the main frame of the rig and having the operating rod 50 pivoted to the operating lever at a point 67 above the pivotal end of the lever, so that shifting of this lever in.
the direction indicated by the arrow B in Fig. 1 will cause the braking action-upon the friction wheel 18, and shifting of the lever in the direction indicated by the arrow C in Fig. 1 will cause the clutching engagement between driving gear 17 and the friction wheel.
Various changes'may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
1. A brake and clutch mechanism comprising a shaft, a driving gear loosely mounted on said shaft, a second shaft having mounted on one end a pinion gear engaging the driving gear and on the other end a slidably mounted pinion gear adapted to engage and disengage a master gear fasmentioned shaft, and clutch friction bands,
each extending contiguous with either half of the periphery of said drum and covering part of the width of the drum, one end of each band being connected to either portion of a U-shaped member and the other end of each band bein connected similarly to a second diametrically opposed U shaped member, said U-shaped members having a shank rotatably journaled in the driving gear, a collar slidably mounted on the first mentioned shaft and having means for rotating said shank, said collar having an actuating lever, a brake friction band extending contiguous with the periphery of the remaining portion of the drum, one end of the brake band being anchored to a fixed element and the other end being fixed to a rocker arm fastened to said element, and the slidably mounted pinion gear having actuating means for engaging and disengaging said master gear.
2. A brake and clutch mechanism comprising a shaft, a drum fixed on said shaft, and clutch friction bands, each extending contiguous with either half of the periphery of said drum and covering part of the width of the drum, one end of each band being connected to either portion of a U-shaped member and the other end of each band being connected similarly to a second diametrically opposed U-shaped member, said U- shaped members having a shank rotatably journaled in the driving gear, a collar slidably mounted on the first mentioned shaft and having means for rotating said shank, said collar havin an actuating lever.
