Spceificaticn of Letters Patent. Pat-.gntgffl Aug, 22, 19 22;
Application filedjecember 3, 1921. Serial No. 519,675.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RALEIGH M. DAVIS,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Ponce de Leon. 1n the county of Holmes Another object-of the invention-is the provlsion o fa holder havmg novel means for engaging and holding the leaves of a book in open position, thesaid means being operable tosimultaneously engage both open.
pages of a'book and adjustable to accommodate books of different sizes.
lVith' the above and other ob ,ects in view,
the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction,
to be hereinafter more fully described, il
lustrated. in the accompanying c'lrawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation: of the invention.
Figure-2 is a rear elevation of the same.
I Figure 3 is a top View looking at the upper edge of the. holderand showing the leaf engaging arms in closed position. 7
Figure 4 is a section on the line 4l l of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a=section on the line 55 of Figure 1 showing the leaf engaging arms in open position.
Figure 6 is a longitudinal section on the line 6-6 of Figure 4, showing the leaf arm actuating mechanism.
Figure 7 is a section on the line' 77 of Figure 6.
Referring to the drawings, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the holder which is designed to be secured to a suitable support, for example, the music rack of a piano, comprises a frame which includes upper and lower rails 10, end connecting rails 11 and a center rail 12. Secured to the lower rail 10 are spaced clamps 13, which are adapted to engage the outer edge of thehorizontal portion of a piano music rack and held in position by means of thumb screws 14:, The
clamps are suitably cushioned as. shown sov as to prevent injury tothe music rack..
Spaced; from the frame, by means of arms 15is a plate 16. This plate is provided with spaced longitudinally arranged slots 17, which are disposedin pairs at opposite-ends of the said plate and are for the purpose. of the passage of curved of permitting fingers 18.. which carry at their outer ends verticallydisposed bars19; These ..fingers and'bars provide a leaf arm which is adapted. to engage over the leaves ofthe book. and as one of these arms is provided upon each. side of, the center of the holder, the book may; be readily held in open position. The,
lower edgeof the platehas extending therefrom a ledge 20 upon which the book is adapted; to.;,rest. In addition, the framev is provided withv a plurality of rearwardlyextendingtcushioned bumpers 21 for contact with the music rack of the piano.
1 Theleaf arms are. capablev of being raised and lowered sosas to receive beneath them the edges of book and in order to provide for theraising'and loweringof these arms, the inner ends of the fingers 18 are connected to a rock shaft 22. This shaft is mounted in bearing brackets 23 provided at each end of a plate 24 and thislplate is .securedto one.
face of a slide 25. A spring 26 surrounds the rock shaft-.22 andacts to normally hold the leaf arms in contact with onto urge them in a, direction toward the plate 16. The lower faces of the bars19 oftheleaf arms are preferably cushioned as shown at 26.,
The slide 25 is duplicated upon eachside of the vertical center of the holder, so that each of the leaf arms is supported by a slide, the purpose being to permit of relative adjustment of these arms so as to accommodate books of different sizes. To accomplish this, each of the slides 25 is provided with a tongue 27 which is received and slides within a groove 28 extending longitudinally in each of the members 10 of the frame.
For the purpose of adjusting the slides 25, the bar 12 has pivotally secured thereto as shown at 30, an adjusting lever 31. This lever has pivotally connected thereto one end of a pair of links 32, the opposite ends of which are pivotally connected to arms 33, in turn pivoted upon the frame as shown at 34. The arms 33 also have pivotal con nection with one end of links 36 and the latter are pivotally secured to the slides as shown at 36. The lever 31 extends downwardly beneath'the frame and is provided with a finger piece 37 By moving the lever 31 upon its pivot, the slides may be relatively moved toward and away from each other so as to adjust the leaf arms for the accommodation of aparticular book. I
Provision is also made for raising the leaf arms to receive the book and this raising of the arms may be accomplished simultaneously with their adjustment. F or this purpose, each of the slides 25 have secured upon their inner faces a guide 37, within which operates a slide bar 38. Pivotally connected to one end of each of the slide bars 38 is an arm .39 and this arm is also pivotally connected to the frame as shown at 40.
In addition, each of the arms 39 is connected to an operating lever 41, through the medium of links 42 and the said operating lever extends downwardly beneath the frame andis provided with a finger piece 43, the
" latter being in juxtaposition to the finger piece 37 so as to permit of the simultaneous operation of the lever with one hand. The opposite end of the slide 38 is provided with anoffset extremity 4:4,whi'ch engages a finger 45 which extends laterally from and is secured to the rock shaft 22. Thus, as
the slide 38 is moved through the operation of the lever 41, its offset portion 4:4: will engage the arm 4L5 and rock the shaft 22 against the actionof the spring. This will raise the leaf arms from engagement with the plate 16 and as soon as the operating lever is released, the leaf arms will return to their normal position, under the action of the spring.
The invention is susceptible of various changesin its form, proportions and minor details ofconstruction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended c a Having described the invention what is claimed is 1. A, book holder embodying a frame, a
slotted face plate secured to and spaced connected to said bar and extending through the slots of the plate, a rock shaft connected to the fingers, means whereby the rock shaft of each arm may be rotated to move the fingers in a direction away from the plate and means for adjusting the arms relatively.
2. A book holder embodying a frame, a slotted face plate secured to and spaced from the frame, spring actuated leaf engaging arms extending through the slots of the plate, said arms each comprising a vertically disposed bar and spaced fingers connected to said bar and extending through the slots of the plate, a rock shaft connected to the fingers, means including oppositely movable slides, whereby the arms may be moved in a direction away from the plate and means for adjusting the arms relatively.
3. A book holder embodying a frame, a slotted face plate secured to and spaced from the frame, spring actuated leaf engaging arms extending through the slots of the plate, said arms each comprising a vertically disposed bar and spaced fingers connected to said bar and extending through the slots of the plate, a rock shaft connected to the fingers, oppositely movable slides engageable with the rock shaft, pivoted'link and lever connections for each of the slides, an operating lever connected to the link and lever connections for simultaneously operating the slides to move the leaf engaging arms in a RALEIGH M.
