To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JULIAN Wear and EDWARD C. CAMPBELL citizens ofthe United States. residing at Norfolk, in the county of Norfolk and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments to Refrigerating Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to attachments for refrigerating apparatus, and has for one of its objects to provide a simply constructed attachment whereby the low temperature of the water drained from the ice is utilized to decrease the temperature in the food containing chamber.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be installed in refrigerating apparatus of varying sizes and constructions, and withoutmaterial change in the attachment or in the refrigerator.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as herein shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention Figurel is a vertical section of a conventional refrigerator with the improved attachment installed therein.

' The improved device is designed to be in stalled in the food chamber of a refrigerator to receive the cold drainage water from the ice chamber and through which the low temperature of the water is permitted to slowly pass to permit the cold from the water to enter the food chamber and thus supplement the cold from the ice in the ice chamber.
The improved device is in two coacting the final drainage leads to the waste pan or the like.
The upper orvertical unit is in the form of a relatively thin oblong casing represented as a whole at 10 and having an inlet 11 in the top or upper side and an outlet 12 in the bottom or lower side.
A vent 13' is also disposed in the top and a draw oii 14: in the bottom of the casing, the
latter having a water tight closure cap 15.
Disposed within the casing 10 are a plural- 'ity of vertical and transverse partition or baffle members to cause the water entering by the intake 11 to t-ake a vertically zig zag or circuitous course to the outlet 12, as indicated by the arrows in Fig. 1.
The drainage water falling through the intake 11 falls upon an inclined partition 16 and flows thence between a vertical partition 17 and one end wall of the'casing. The partition 17 stops short of the bottom of the casing so that the water can rise between the partition 17 and the next partition 18, which stops short of the inclined partition 16 and the next vertical partition 19. A fourth vertical partition 20 extends between the side walls of the casing and intermediate the space between the partition 19 and the adj acent end wall of the casing and stops short of the top of the casing and is connected at its lower end to one end of a second inclined partition 21 the latter connected at the other end to the partition 18 and spaced from the bottom of the casing.
The water will thus How in a continuous vertically zig zag or circuitous course through the casing and is thus held for a greater length of time within the casing.
V The intake 11 and the outlet 12- of the vertical unit are provided respectively with wire cloth screens, indicated at 22 and'23 to prevent the entrance of foreign matter.
The lower or horizontal unit comprises a flat oblong casing represented as a whole at 2& and having a plurality of internal partitions 25 attached to the walls of the casing 2 1 having openings and passages 26 at their alternate ends, so that water flowing through the lower unit is caused to take a zig zag or circuitous course, as indicated by the arrows in Fig. 6.
Fitting over the outlet 12 of the upper casing or unit 10, is a vertical branch 27 of an obliquely directed or inclined conductor 27', the latter leading at 28 into the casing 24: at one end.
Leading at 29 into the casing 24 at the other end, is an inclined conductor 80 with a downwardly directed outlet 81 at its lower end, the discharge 81 being preferably in vertical alinement with the outlet 12 of the upper unit and the intake 27 of the upper unit.
By this arrangement the improved device may be installed in the ordinary refrigerator in place of the usual drainage tube and requires no change whatever in the refrigerating structure.
The walls of the refrigerator are represented at 32, the ice chamber at 33 and the food chamber at 34:, and it will be obvious that when the improved apparatus is installed therein,'the cold water drained from the ice will pass slowly through the two units and accumulate therein until the compartments produced by the transverse partitionsare flooded. After this the water will escape through the outlet '31 only-so fast as it is replenished from the melting ice.
The two units will thus be constantly supplied with water almost ice cold and the cold therefrom distributed uniformly within the food chamber and materially de creasing the temperature of the same.
Thus a material decrease of temperature is attained in the food chamber with the same amount of ice, or the same temperature heretofore attained in the ordinary construction of refrigerator with a reduced quantity of ice. I
The improved. device will be constructed wholly of sheet metal, preferably galvanized or otherwise rendered noncorrosive, and of any size or form to fit various forms of refrigerators.
. The improved apparatus may be applied without material structural change to other than-refrigerators, for instance in cold storage plants or of any structure wherein ice is used as a-refrigerant.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed in the drawings and set forth in the specification, but it will be understood that modifications within thescope of the claimed invention may be made in the construction without departing from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
