HEB/BERT A. HANDY, OF TULSA, OKLAHOMA.
P'UME'.
iaeaeea.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern lie it known that l, HERBERT A. HANDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tulsa, in the county of Tulsa and State 01 Oklahoma, have invented a new and useful Pump, which is described herein.
This invention is identical with the one for which I applied for Letters Patent on December 18, 1917, and which was allowed April 1, 1918, the application bearing Serial N umber 207781, and declared abandoned for non-payment of final fee.
The main object of my invention is to furnish a means of extracting water or other liquid from tubular wells into Which a cylinder of limited diameter only can be inserted.
The present invention is really a late development of an invention of my own of a double action pump and for which I applied for Letters Patent, April 5, 1893, under Serial Number @79688.
The development consists chiefly in the attachment to the lower end of the piston of a part, comprising two ports, controlled by a valve or valves and packing fitted closely to the main cylinder. Also the introduction at the lower end of the main cylinder of a port, controlled by a valve, thus converting the double acting into a triple acting pump.
The entire reconstructed pump will be shown herein, the mechanism of which is illustrated by the accompanying drawing which is a vertical section thereof.
The several parts of the pump may be best described by reference to the drawing wherein the main cylinder is indicated by the letters A B while C D indicates an active cylinder or piston, acting reciprocally inside of the main cylinder and out side of the hollow head, E F and the feed pipe G. The main cylinder A B is supplied at the upper end with a cap, into which may be engaged the well pipe J, and to the cap is attached a guide K for the piston rod L to which is attached the stop M which limits the valve 1.
The numeral 1 indicates an annular valve working loosely about the piston rod and controls port 2. The top plate of the piston is perforated plentifully to form port 2. Numeral 4 indicates a port in the top, and 7 a port in the bottom plate of the hollow head F similar to the one at 2, and they are controlled by valves 3 and 8 which Specification of Letters Patent. Patgnted Ann, 22 1922 Application filed March 14, 1921. Serial No. 453,556.
are connected by rods, four in number for more simultaneous action. At 10 and 15,
is placed a packing about the feed pipe.
Numeral 11 indicates a port in the lower.
end of the piston proper, and 12 a valve working loosely about the feed pipe and controlling alternately both ports 11 and 13. Numeral 17 indicates a port in bottom of chamber 20 and is controlled by valve 16 which in turn is limited by the stop ll attached to feed pipe. Numeral 18 indicates a port and ball valve through which all water must enter the pump. Numeral 19 indicates the space inside the piston between 6 and port 2 and 9 the space or chamber between 6 and port 11 while 20 indicates the chambers in the main cylinder between the packing at 1A and port 17. Numeral 22 indicates an uncontrolled port or open grill in the side of the shallow chamber in which operates the valve 12, and at p is indicated a suction pipe which may be used if desired.
To explain the operation of the pump it will be noted that in the drawing, Fig. l, the piston is shown in low position.
On the upward stroke of the piston valve 1 closes port 2 and, valve 3 opening, chamber 19 is filled through port 4:. Also valve 12, which controls both ports ll and 13, opens downward and, valve 8 closing port 7, the water in chamber 9 is forced through port 11 and open grill 22, into the main cylinder and delivered: port 13 having been closed by valve 12. Also valve 16 opening, chamber 20 is filled through port 17.
()n the downward stroke of the piston, valve 1 opens and, valve 3 closing, the water in chamber 19 is forced through port 2 and delivered. Also valve 8 opening downward; and valve 12 closing upward, chamber 9 is filled through the feed pipe G and hollow head F. Also valve 16 closes, while valve 12, doing double service, opens port 13 and closes port 11. Thus leaving the piston in position for the upward stroke when the water which was previously in chamber 20 will be delivered. It will be noted that the Water above piston cup 14: and the water in chamber 9 will be delivered on the upward stroke, and that the water in. chamber 19 will be delivered on the downward st k s th t Wh e the p n is s the feed pipe and the whole-inserted in the cylinder.
Havin -thus described the I construction and operation of. my pump, what I claim is A'Zpurnp consisting of a-"main cylinder, having attached 'to its lower end, and ex-- tending partially through'it, a stand'pipe fitted with a hollo'whead supplied with ports both on the upper and lower" sides, said ports being controlled by valves; said main with a port and said port controlled by a valve, a piston working reciprocally inside said main cylinder and outside said hollow cylinder being supplied at the lower end i head and stand pipe, and fitted closely thereto by packing; said piston supplied at the upper end with a port, said port controlled by a valve, and at the lower end with two ports, with a small open chamber between, said chamber being supplied with a valve controlling said ports, and said chamber being supplied with open ports in its sides, all substantially as described."
