Windsor, in the county of Windsor, State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blank Holding and Ejecting Mechanism, of which the following is a specification, reference being. had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to blank holding and ejecting mechanism for presses and the like, and is especially concerned with a device for holding c-- lindrical bushing blanks on the platen-of a press in position for inand subsequent- It has for its principal object theprovision of a simple, improved holding and ejecting mechanism for presses and the like, which may be fed manually with ease and safety to the operato-r,'which will correctly position and hold the blanks on the platen of the press, and automatically eject the blanks from the press.
Other objects will be following specification and claims.
To enable others to practise my invention 1 will now describe a practical embodiment of it, reference being had in the description to drawings attached to and forming a part of this specification in which,

A table or platen 5 is secured between uprights 1 and on bolster plate 5 of the press. It may consist of one part, but is preferably provided with a central circular opening 6, having a shoulder 7 near its upper surface to receive and support an adaptor 8. This adaptor is centrally bored as at 8 to permit the broach 3 to pass through without engagement with the sides thereof. The size of the opening 8, however, should be only slightly larger than the broach since theblank or bushing 9 is supported by the platen and adaptor during Adaptors having different sized openings, suitable to bushings and breaches of various sizes can be mounted inthe platen and will quickly adapt the press to blanks of any desired size.

The other end of member 16 which extends well beyond the corresponding end of arm 15 is suitably bent at points adjacent opening 8 to form a plurality of straight blank holding portions or surfaces 16, 16 and 16 inclined to each other and capable of co-operation with plate 10 to position and hold a blank on platen 5 suitably, for broaching. A lip 22, depending from one of these surfaces, 16 is offset toward plate 10 for a purpose later to be described. The free end 16 of member 16 which constitutes an essential part thereof bends back from'the blank holding portion 16 at an acute angle to provide a guiding surface for the blank when it is being fed into the holding device.
The dotted lines, Fig. 1, show the position of parts of the device before a blank has been inserted therein. To insert a blank, it is placed on the platen 5 and pushed toward opening a and against surface 12 of plate 10. When it contacts with the guiding surface 16 of member 16, this member pivots on post 14 against the action fof spring 17, thus permitting the blank to approach opening 8 without separate manual movement of member 16. As the blank contacts with surface 13 of plate 10, portions 16 and 22 of member 16 it into place against surface 13 and about opening 8 and hold it in operative position for the broaching operation of the press. assists in positioning the blank on the platen without, however, exerting relatively great pressure on it, while lip 22 presses the blank tightly against surface 13 of plate 10. Since the latter surface is relatively narrow as compared with the length of the blank, it is desirable to apply holding pressure to the opposite side of the blank in substantially the same plane as surface 13 to prevent tilting of the blank,
as might result if the entlre portion of surface 16 contacted with the bushing. The lip 22 by being located in practically the same plane as plate 10 accomplishes the holding of the bushing without liability of tilting it.
After the downward stroke of the press which forces the broach 3 through the bushing, the broach is retracted by the upward stroke of the press taking with it the blank which clings to it until the stripper 3 separates it from the broach. This action is clearly illustrated in Fig. 5., Projection 22 moves underneath the edge of the blank as it is drawn up to the stripper, thus preventing the blank from falling back onto the platen 5*, when released, and in part supports the blank as member 16 actuated by spring 17, moves it onto the top face engage it, pressing weaves of plate 10 out of contact with the press and broach 3.'
While I have for purposes of illustration, shown and described a specific embodiment of my invention, I do not wish to be limited thereto since various modifications might be made in the particular device described without departing from the spirit of the invention and the scope of what is claimed.
What I claim is:'
, 1. In a blank holding and ejecting mechanism for presses and the like in combination a platen, a plate adjustably mounted thereon and adapted to form a stop for a blank, and a spring actuated member pivotally mounted on the said platen and cooperable with the said plate to retain a blank in operative position relative to the press and to remove the blank after the press has completed its work thereon.
2. In a blank holding and ejecting mechanism for presses and the like, in combination, a platen, a member fixedly secured to the platen, a second member movably secured to the platen and adapted to cooperate with the said first member in retaininga blank in operative position on the said platen, the said second member being adapted to eject the said blank over the first member after it has been'removed from between the saidmembers, and means for removing the blank from between the said members.
3. In a blank holding and ejecting mechanism for presses and the like in combination, a blank supporting platen, means for holding a blank in operative position thereon and for ejecting it therefrom comprising a spring member having a depending portion adapted to engage the blank and hold it in operative position and to project beneath the blank during the upward stroke of the press thereby supportingthe blank in part during ejection.
4. In a blank holding and ejecting mechanism for presses and the like, in combination, a blank supporting platen, a plate adjustably secured to the platen and having relatively narrow blank engaging surfaces, a spring actuated member pivotally mounted on the'platen and having a relatively wide blank engaging surface and a relatively short, narrow blank engaging surface projecting from the lower edge of the said spring member and offset relative thereto to engage a blank in a plane with the said narrow surfaces of the plate.
5. In a blank holding and ejecting mechanism for presses and the like in combination, a platen, two members mounted thereon and adapted to retain a blank in operative position on the platen,one of the members being adapted to move the blank laterally across the other member when it is removed from between the two members by the press.
6. In a blank holding and ejecting mechanism for presses and the like, in combina tion, a platen, two cooperating members mounted on the platen in different horizontal planes, one member having a depending portion in the same plane as the other member and adapted to cooperate therewith to retain a blank in operative position, the said depending portion being adapted to assist in moving a blank out of operative position after a press operation has been performed thereon.
7. In an apparatus for broaching cylindrical bushings, in combination, a press having a reciprocating head, a broach secured therein, a platen having an aperture in alignment with the said broach, a stripper above the platen, members mounted on the platen and adapted to support a cylindrical bushing in alignment with the said broach,
one of the said members being adapted to eject the bushing after it has been released from the broach by the stripper.
8. In an apparatus for broaching elongated cylindrical blanks in combination, a reciprocating broach, a platen having an aperture in alignmentwith the said broach, a stripper above the platen and adapted to remove blanks from the broach after broaching, a plate having a narrow, blank engaging surface adapted to position a blank adjacent the said aperture for broaching, and a spring pressed member adapted, when cooperating With the said plate, to retain a blank in broaching position and adapted, when acting alone, to eject a blank when the latter is removed from the broach.
