To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE D. Intro, a citizen of the United States, residing at Depew, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful improvement in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in wrenches, and more particularly to wrenches of the kind having a movable jaw which is slidable len thwise of a shank or handle toward and irom a fixed jaw.
The objects of this invention are to provide a wrench of this kind comprising a body portion made of a single piece of sheet metal bent to form fixed jaw which is integral with a hollow shank or handle in which. a shank of the movable jaw is slidably arranged, the hollow shank or handle beingtormcd in such a manner as to present a finished appearance and to produce a joint between the meeting edges of the piece 01'? sheet metal whicn will not out into or otherwise injure the hand of a person using the wrench; also to provide a wrench of this kind which consists of only two sheet metal parts and an adjusting nut and which is inexpensive to manufacture and reliable in operation; also to improve the constr ction of wrenches in other respects hereinafter specified.

The wrench embodying the invention comprises a body portion A which is made of sheet metal and bent to form a hollow shank or handle portion 10 and having two projecting parts secured together to form a fixed jaw 11 which is integral with the handle portion, and a movable jaw member Specification of Letters Patent. B which has a shank or guide portion 12 entering into the hollow handle 10 and a aw portion 13 which is movable toward and from the fixed jaw 11. The lower end of the shank of the movable jaw member is provided with a threaded stem or part 14 formed integral with the movable member of the wrench and adapted to be engaged. by means of an adjusting nut C, which extends through holes 15 in the handle portion 10. The body portion of the wrench and the movable jaw member are both formed of sheet metal, the movable jaw portion being punched or cut in the desired shape and having the threads cut on the part it in the usual manner.
The body portion A of the wrench may be made from a flat blank such as shown in Fig. t having a body portion 17 which is adapted to be bent along the lines indicated by 18--18 so that the longitudinal middle portion of the blank forms the back edge of the body portion or handle of the wrench, and the parts of the blank adjacent to the middle portion form the opposite sides of the hollow handle. The blank is also provided with laterally extending portions 19 which are adapted to be bent or offset along the lines 20 as indicated in Figs. 5 and 6 so that when the body portion of the wrench is bent along the lines 1818 the two jaw portions 1919 will lie flat against each other and thus form a fixed jaw which is twice the thickness of the metal from which the body portion of the wrench is made. At the same time, the portions 19 form, along the lines 20 on whichthey are bent or offset, a fixed guide edge or portion of considerable length, which, together with the rear side of the body between the lines iii-18, cooperate to provide a snugly fitting guideway for the shank portion of the movable jaw to the extreme upper edge of the body portion, thus preventing any excessive play between the movable jaw and the body portion when the wrench is in use. When the blank from which the body por tion is made is bent into the desired form, the two jaw portions 19-19 are preferably in intimate contact with one another and are secured together in any suitable manner, by rivets 25 or other suitable holding means, thus holding the parts of the body portion of the wrench in correct relation to each other.
The two holes 15 in the blank are also tion of the wrench to form a butt joint which is neat in appearance and which makes it possible to construct the body por tion of the wrench with rounded'cornerportions or edges and thereby produce a handle on the wrench which does not cut into or otherwise injure. the hand of the person using the wrench.
The blank is preferably provided with recesses 23 which separate the lines 20 and 21 along which the blank is to b These recesses greatly facilitate the bending of the blank owing to the fact that the bend which the metal given along the lines 20 is different from that which the metal is given along the lines 21.
The movable jaw member B is preferably formed of sheet metal of approximately twice thethickness of that used in the body portion of the wrench, so that the jaw 13 will be approximately of the same thickness as the jaw 11 formed of the two continuing portions 1'9 of the body portion The shank portion 12 ofjthe movable jaw member fits, snugly into the hollow handle portion and acts as a guide for the movable jaw member." The stem 14 which is formed integralwith the shank portion 12 ispreferably tl readed by means of the ordinary thread cutting dies, which leaves the stem portion flat on opposite sides and threaded on the opposite, edge portions.
In the manufacture of the body: portion ofjthe wrench, a'blank such as shown in Fig. 4, is first stamped or cutout and is then bent along the lines 20 and 21, which gives the blank the appearance shown in F 5 and, 6. The blank is then bent along the lines l8-l8 which places the parts of the blank into their operative positions-with regard to cachet-her, The parts arethen held or secured in this position by means of'thej rivets 2,5 or other suitable means.
The adjusting nutis then inserted into the openings, or holes 15 of the handle and the shank, of the, movable jaw is inserted into the. hollow handle so. that the nut. engages the threaded stem 14 of the "movable jaw.
If desired, the thickness of the fixed. jaw f' the wrench may be increased, by placing an insert 26; between the two jaw. parts of bent.

The wrench described is simple and inexpensive to manufacture and is very reliable in operation since the adjusting nut C engaging the threaded portion ll of the shank of the movable jaw makes it possible to adjust the movable aw relatively to the fixed jaw much nfiore readily than in the case of the adjusting wormi usually em ployed. The bending of the edges 22 of the handle portion so that-the joint between the edges of the blank is formed intermediate of one of the edges of the handle portion,makes it possible to round off'all of the corners oft-he handle portion of the wrench, thus producing a smooth and well rounded handle and avoiding injury to the hand of the person using the wrench.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a wrench, the combination of a body portion having a fixed inner jaw formed integral with a hollow handle, said body portion being made of a sheet metal blank, the longitudinal middle portion of which forms the rear edge said body portion and the portions of said blank adjacent to.
