citizen of the United States, residing at `Jac'zksonvillefin the county of Duval and State of Florida, have invented a new and useful Gate, of which the following is a specification.
It is the obje'ct'gof` this invention to provide novel means for imparting swinging movementl to a gatev mounted to move 1nr a "vertical plane,'the construction ybeing such that ,thev gate may be lifted out of engagement with arkeeper whichtends to 4hold the `gate in a closed position. j f

With the above and other objects inview, -which'- will appear as rthe description proceeds, the invention resides in thecombination and arrangement of'parts and in the details of constructionhereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, .within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment -of the' invention shown can be made Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows in side elevation, a device constructed 1n accordance with the invention, parts being broken away and the gate being closed; Figure 2 is a side elevation wherein the gate is shown open; Figure 3 is an end elevation; Figure L1 is a section on the line 1r-f1 of Figure 3; Figure 5 is a section on the line 5-5 of Figure 3; Figure 6 is a fragmental elevation showing a portion of the gate, parts being broken away; and Figure 7 is a section on the line 7-7 of Figure 6.
The numeral 1 denotes a support which may consist of a pair of parallel posts. The numeral 2 designates the frame of a gate. A reinforcing member 3 is secured to the lower inner corner of the gate frame 2. Plates 5 lie against the outer surface of the reinforcing member 3 and are connected at 7 to angular arms 6. The'arms 6 are united by a securing element 8 having movement in the gate, a spacer being carried by the securing element 8 and being located between the arms 6 as clearly shown in Figure 5. The plates 5 are mounted on a bolt 9 carried by the reinforcing member 3. Links 23 are provided, the lower ends of the links 23 being pivoted at 24 tothe rad-ius arms 21, intermediate the ends of the radius arms. pivoted at 25 in the inner ends of oppositely extended operating levers 26 fulcrumed at 27 on brackets 28 carried by the posts 1, the brackets being supportedby braces 29. A transverse latch' 30 is secured at 31 to the inner end ofthe gate frame 2. The latch 30 is adapted to be received in seats 32 formed in the upper edges of keepers 33 secured to the posts 1. The keepers 33have inclined edges 34.
In practical operation, when either of the levers 26 is swung downwardly at its outer end, the corresponding link-23 swings the radiusv arm 21 upwardly, and motiony is imparted to the lever 5-6 by way of the link 18, the lever tilting on its fulcrum 9,`and the springs 17 being put under tension, the

disengages the latch 30 from the keepers 33. Next, the gate is swung backward with the bolt l0 as a pivot, the gate swinging into the vertical, open position shown in Figure 2.

2. ln a device of the class described, a support; a pivot element carried thereby; a gate mounted on'the pivot element and having a limited amount of lost motion thereon; a lever ulcrumed on the gatev and mounted to swing on the pivot element; a spring connecting the lever with the gate; an operating means; and mechanism for connecting the operating means with the lever.
3. ln a device of the class described, a support; a pivot element carried by the support; a gate mounted to swing vertically on the pivot element and having a limited amount of lost motion on the pivot element; a lreeper on the support; a latch on the gate and engaging the keeper; and means for lifting the gate vertically, to disengage the latch from the keeper, and for swinging the gate to an open position on. the pivot element. y A
