Be it, known that I, EDWARD VlT. KnoUGH}, acitizen of the; UnitedStates, residing at Middleboro; in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Shuttle- Box- Operating Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved shuttle box operating mechanism adapted to be used in connection with the Knowles loom.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a roller motion mechanism for operating the shuttle boxes designed to replace the positive fixed motion now in use, and which is extremely efficient in operation and will eliminate the grave defects existing in the looms at the present time, which comprise picker sticks, pickers, shuttle smashes, displaced shuttles, and the like.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved and novel means of mounting the mechanism referred to.
With these and such other objects in view, as will be apparent from the description, my invention resides in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, of which- I Figure 1 is an end elevation of one side, commonly known as left hand side of the Knowles loom, equipped with the improved roll motion mechanism;

Figure 3. an end elevation of the right hand end of the loom, equipped with the improved roll motion mechanism; and
Figure 41, a side elevation of a mechanism illustrated in Figure 3.
The invention is shown as applied to a Knowles loom and in the drawings, the end bars of the loom are illustrated .as at 20, which carry on the usual brackets 21 the bell crank levers 22 carrying the quadrant gears 23, and connected with the operating arms 24. Extending laterally'of the end frames 20 are brackets 25 carrying shafts on which are journaled pinions 26 for engagement with the quadrant gears. These elements described comprise the ordinary construction of the Knowles loom and form no part of the present invention.

At each side of the loom is disposed a pair of these rollers which carry chains 26 adapted to be wound thereon and connected at one end to the rollers and at their opposite ends to the uppermost ends of bell crank 1evers 1, 8, 5 and 7, supported .on rock shafts 27, disposed on brackets 12 and 14 extending laterally from the main frame 20. The opposite end portions of the bell crank levers 1, 3, 5 and 7, are pivotally connected to vertically operating rods 28 connectedat their lower ends with levers 16 pivoted on the rock shaft 29 carried by the main frame 20 adjacent the bottom thereof, to which in turn are pivoted the levers 15 carrying at their opposite ends the operating rods 30; Rods 28 and'levers 15 and 16 are part of the ordinary construction of the loom and form no part of the present invention, other than in their connection with the bell crank levers 1, 3, 5 and 7.
As a means of preventing the quadrant gears 23 from sliding out of mesh, 1' provide a check comprising a casting 13 fastened to the main frame of the loom on the inside of the levers, as illustrated in Figure 1. This check member is adjustable over the quadrant levers to prevent them jumping out when the vibrators comprising the ordinary construction'ofthe loom are removed.

I claim:
1. In a loom, the combination with a vi bratory gear mechanism of the loom, of shafts extending laterally therefrom, roll ers secured on said shafts, chains on said rollers, a connection between said chains and the shuttle box operating mechanism of the loom, whereby on rotation of the rollers movement will be imparted to the shuttle box operating mechanism.
2. In a loom, a shuttle box operating mechanism comprising the combination wound thereon, rock shafts carried by the loom frame, bell crank levers disposed on said rock shafts, and connection between said bell crank levers and chains at one end of the levers and connection between the opposite end of the levers and the shuttle box operating mechanism of the loom.
