" Cobbling Outfits, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in cobbling outfits, and has for its object the provision of an improved construction of.
this character especiallyadapted for 'mounting various types of cobblers lasts and holding boots or shoes in operative relation therewith.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.'
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Fig. 1, is a side View of an outfit embodying the invention, showing a shoe in section in position of use thereon, f
Fig. 2, a vertical section taken at right angles to Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3, a detail view of a slightly modified form of construction, for securing the binding strap of the device in place.
The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, comprises a pedestal in the form of a vertical pipe section 4, having a circular base 4 at its lower end adapted to be secured to a floor, or other suitable support, and at its upper end a tubular socket 5 threaded thereon. rl`he socket 5 is adapted to receive the stem 6 of an ordinary boot or shoe last 7, a set of lasts being each provided with one of the stems 6 so as to render them readily interchangeable on the pedestal 4. A binding head 8 is slidably mounted on pedestal 4 and carries laterally extending perforated ears or lugs 9,' to which are attached wire loops 10 adapted to engage snap hooks 11 at the lower ends of a looped strap 12 passing over the last 7 and adapted to hold a boot or shoe 13 in position thereon, as shown. The head 8 is provided with laterally extending arms 14 to constitute foot rests or pedals, and an automatic locking lever 15 is hinged at 16 to the under side of one of the arms 14 and is provided with a slightly oblong opening slidably engaging over pedestal 4, as indicated.
specification oftettersrant. PatentedfAug. 15,' 1922i In mathe desired Iasi-.is placed in' posi; f
tion on top of thepedestal'4and`the boot ory shoe fitted thereon-in the usual manner, with the strap 12 passing aroundthe instep portion thereof. Then downward pressure is applied by placing the foot upon 'onefof the arms 14, ywhich exerts binding tensionon the strap 12 to hold the boot or shoe securely in place on the last.' .iThe leaf 15 will `slide freely onv thev pedestal 4during downward movement of .the head 8 in applying this 1;'
binding tension, but automatically interlocks with sai-d pedestal to prevent upward movements of the head 8 and consequent` relief of the tensionin strap 12. When it is desiredto vremove the :boot or shoe, a slight upward pressure on the free end o-f the -leaf 15 will release the tension in strap A12, wherei upon the boot orffshoe may be readily removed and a new last anda new boot or shoe applied, as desired. The device is a simple and effective one for the purpose and capable of economical manufacture. i
In g. 3l have illustrated a slightly different arrangement for securing the ends of so f the strap 12 to the head 8. In this arrangement the head is provided with pairs of adjacent perforated lugs 9 and a crosspin 10. adapted to engage the snap hook 11 on the ends of strapv 12. Gtherwise the vconstruction is identical with that already described,
and the operation is the same. This arrangement furnishes a slightly better arrangement for securing the snap hooks 11 to the bindinghead' 8, in that it tends to keep the strap froml falling off ofthe last or stand when the tension therein is relieved.
Vhile Ihave illustrated and described the preferred form of construction forcarrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification withoutI departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise detailsof construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A cobbling outfit comprising a support; a last on'said support; a head freely slidable on said support; means for automatically securing said vhead in adjusted p o-` Vsitions on said support; and a fleXiblebinding loop secured to said head andpassing around said last; substantially as described. 2. A cobbling outfit comprising a pedestal; a last removably mounted on top of said pedestal; ahead freely slidable on said ped-l estal; a laterally extending pressure-applying arm on said head; means for automatically securing said head in adjusted positions on said support; and a looped strap secured to said head and passing around saidl last, substantially as described.
` 3. A. cobbling outfit comprising a pedestal; a tubular socket at the upper end of said pedestal; a last provided With a stem removably fitting Within said socket; a head Yfreely yslidable vertically onsaid pedestal; laterally extending arms on said head; a leaf hinged at one end to the under side of one of said arms and having an oblong opening therein slidably engaging said pedestal; and a looped strap secured to said vhead and passing over said last, substantially as described.
4. A cobbling` outfit comprising a pedestal; a last at the top of said pedestal; a head freely slidable on said pedestal; a laterally extending pressure-applying arm on said head; a leaf hinged at one end to the under side of said head and having an oblongopening` therein slidably engaging said pedestal, the other end of said leaf being extended sufficiently to permit of the ready engagementthereo'f for releasing purposes; and a looped strap secured to said head and passing over said last, substantially as described.
5. A cobbling outfit comprising' a smooth cylindrical pedestal; a last at the top of said pedestal; a headiloosely mounted on said pedestal and capable of free rotatable and slidable movement thereon; means for automatically securing said head in adjusted positions on said pedestal; and a flexible binding loop secured to said head and passing around said last; substantially as described.
In testimony Whereofl have signed my vname to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
