Application le. March 23, 1921. Seriai No. 454,883.. j j
vented la new andy Improved Closure, of
which the following is a full, clear, and exact description;
My invention relates to a closure, and more particularly a' receptacle closure.
It is a well appreciated fact that it has been necessary to provide various receptacles for the housing of certain substances, and articles, which receptacles would provide a closure which might readily'v be operated'to effect an opening of the same. y These closures have, for the most part, presented defects, in that the same were susceptible to damage'in the rough usage to which receptacles are subjected while being shipped. Further the closure was liable. to come open, incident to the receptacle being dropped orthrown in-handling, soas to expose, and in many instances spoil the contents of the same.
With this in view, I have provided a closure which is ideally'f'adapted for use in' connection with receptacles of the class stated, and more particularly receptacles adapted to contain motion picture films, and by means of which, primarily, the elements effecting a retention of the closureare guarded against injury. j y j A further object of my invention is the provision of a device of the character speelfied, in which means will be provided'serving to yprevent any accidental opening of the closure irrespective of the rough usage to which it may be subjected.
Further objects of my invention will appear in the annexed specification, taken in connection with the drawings which latter present one practical embodiment of my invention, and in which; j
Figure 1 is a partly fragmentary plan view of a receptacle closure, and elements for retaining the same in applied position.
Figure 2 is a sectional side view taken along the lines 2-2 in the direction of the arrows indicated in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken alon the line 3 3 and in the direction ofthe arrows also indicated in Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a similar section taken along the linee-aand in the direction ofthe arand rows also indicated in the lfigure. specified, l
`Figiires 5 and 6 are perspective of detached portions of the closure` securing means embodying my improved constructlon.
Referring now moreparticularlyto Fig.-
ures 1 an'd 2 it will be seen Vtha'tthe reference numeral 10 indicatesthe .body of aV receptacle, which in the embodiment illustrated, I
is `of a construction permitting ofthe ship` ping of motion picture j l l a lid forming a closure 1l, associated with it.
It will be noted, however, that contr-ary= to lthe conventional constructiomthat the "lid 11 forming the closure, is provided lwithfa sunken or recessed part 12 in its upper face,
and mounted in this recessed part, are' the elements providing the. fastening means vfor the closure, it being also` noted, assuming that the thickness -ofthese elements does not exceed more than substantially the depth lof films,` and which has the recessed portion, that these elementswill be protected from receivingfanyblowsdelivered against thev lidv 11, aside yfrom the fact that the recessed portion ofthe lid will also strengthen this member. A j .v
Referring now more particularly to the `elements providingthe fasteninglwhich serves to retain the lid in its proper-position iit willv benotedthat I vutilize a latch member. which includes the body portion 13 formed with a longitudinally extending opening` 14, and the edge of the body portionl adjacent the outer end of the opening 14 is `outstruck so as to'form a stoprl. AlsoI therear endof the body portion 13 may be.conveniently bent so as to form a ngerY portion4 16 by means of which the latch may retracted.
The latch is slidably associated `with the' upper facev of the lid within the recessed portion by means ofa guide plate 17` formed with 'a raised'portion 18 serving to accommodate the body ofthe latch, and it willbe noted that by positioning the outer,` edge off the guide plate 17 adjacent the wall vformed by the'recessed portion 12, thatthe fstop 15 be manually ioo of the latch" will feo-act' with this .w-alL- and prevent a projection ofthe latch beyond'na predetermined point. It ,is valso-to be noted that a spring 19 is associated/with the guide "f plates 17, and latch proper, and that [a certain portion ofthe body of thi'sspring rests y withinfthe opening 14, its ends `coi'itiacting respectively with the reai" end of j' the vraised portion 18 and the stop 15, thus serving to normally effect a projection of the latch, and to retain the Asame in the position illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, it being noted that a seal may be applied through the opening 16 of the finger portion 16, and through the opening 17 of the plate 17 to prevent an unauthorized opening of the receptacle Without this being detected.
Any conventional means may be provided for hingedly or otherwise securing the lid 11 in its proper position, and to also provide a co-operating element for the lid 13, l preferably utilize a. pair of outwardly extending ears 2O forming a part of the lid 11, which ears project beyond the plane into which the edge of the same extends, and pass through` 'openings forming a partof the `body of the receptacle 10. l Thus, when.. the
lid is :in seated position, and the latch has the outer en d of its body portion projecting ythrough an opening also formed in the side Walls of the body 10 of the receptacle, it will be noted that any movement on the part of the'lid 11 is precluded. Further, upon the latch being retracted, it will be obvious that the ears 20 co-operating with the openings formed -to accommodate the same Willact in a certain capacity as a detachable hinge permittingready access to be had to the interior of the receptacle. y
To now provide means which Will serve as an element permitting of the carrying of .the entire unit, land which will also lock the latch against any movement I utilize a handle 21 Which is rockingly mounted upon the a receptacle, of a lid adapted to be associated lid 11 by means of a plate 22. it being noted that a spring 23 is employed, which co-operates With the handle 21 and plate 22, to cause the former to normally occupy the position indicated in 'full lines in Figures 1 and 2.
mum of protection will be provided for the fastening means. It will also be noted that although the handle serves as an element by means of which theventire unit may readily be carried, that should the unit be dropped or occupy a position of rest, that the handle -vvill immediately Aswing from the position indicated in dotted lines in Figure `2 to that indicated in full lines, it being` obvio`us lthat in the latter position any retraction of the latch suiiici ent to permit of a disengagement of the lid 11 from the body of the receptacle 10 is prevented.
Obviously f numerous modications of structure might readily he resorted to Without in the least departing from the spirit of my invention, which 1 claim as:
1. A closure for a receptacle, including a lid adapted to be applied to a receptacle, a latch secured to said lid and being adapted to co-operate With said receptacle to retain the same in applied position, and a handle ttor carrying said receptacle, said handle being movably secured to said lid and being adapted to co-operate With said latch to normally prevent a retraction of the same.
2. The combination With a receptacle, of a lid adapted to be associated with the same, a guide plate secured to said lid, a latch slidably associated With said guide plate, a spring co-operating with said latch and adapted to normally project the same, a handle for carrying said receptacle, said handle being hingedly .secured to said lid, f
and means for normally swinging said handle to a position adjacent the rear end of said latch to prevent a retraction of the same.
3. The combination with a receptacle, of a lid adapted to be associated With kthe same, a guide plate secured to said lid, al latch slidably associated YWith said guide plate, a spring co-operating lWith said latch and adapted to normally project the same, a handle hingedly secured to said lid, and a `spring co-operating with said handle and adapted to swing said handle to a position at Which it Will lie'adjaeent the rear end of said latch to prevent a retraction of the same.
l. A closure including in combination With With said receptacle, a guide plate secured to said lid, a latch movably associatedtvvith said guide plate, said latch 'including a body portion formed With a longitudinally extending opening, a stop adjacent the outer end of said opening, and a spring adapted to partially lie Within said opening and co-operating with said stop to project said latch.
5. ,A closure including in combination with a receptacle, of a lid adapted to be associated With saidv receptacle, a guide plate secured to said lid, a latch movably associated with said guide plate, said latch including a body portion formed With a longitudinally extending opening, a stop adjacent the outer end or" said opening, and a spring adapted to partially lie Within said opening and co-operating with said stop to project said latch, said body portion terminating in a inger portion.- y
f 6. A closure including in combination With a receptacle, of a lid adapted to be associated with said receptacle, a guide plate secured to `said lid, a latch movably associated With said guide plate, said latch including a body portion formed With a longitudinally extending opening, a stop adjacent the outer end of said opening, and a spring adapted to parindependent of said latch and adapted to normally 'co-operate With the same to prevent a retraction of said latch.
8. A closure for a receptacle including a lid, a normally projected latch carriedby said lid and adaptedto retain the same `in closed position lWith respect to the body of said receptacle, a handle for carrying said receptacle, said handle normally bearing against said latch to prevent a retraction of the same. v
