Numeral 25 denotes a set screw for holding the lever upon the short shaft 'in usual manner, and 26 denotes a metal washer between the head of the set screw and the operating lever.
A cam member 27 upon the under side of the operating lever and secured thereto in any manner, as by ordinary screws 28, is provided with a cam face 29 adapted to engage stud 16, when the operating lever is rotated in the direction of the arrows in Figs. 1 and 2 and the stud is located as in Fig. 2, to move said stud to about the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1. Numeral 30 denotes a guide pin which may be situated upon the under side of disc'plate 13 and adjacent the, feeding roller to assist the feeding roller in guiding a can A when being out, see particularly Fig. 4, and 31 de- ,notes an ordinary form of handle which may be arranged upon the outer end of the operating. lever.
The device operates in the following manner: When it is desired to open a can, the rotatable gripping roller is first moved away from the feeding roller to be situated as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 or as suggested by dotted lines in Fig. 1, and is next positioned against the under face of .disc plate 13 so that the inner side of the flange of the can is in engagement with or closely adjacent the feeding roller and guide pin. See Fig. 4. The operating lever is then rotated, in the direction of the arrows in Figs. 1 and 2, until the end of. the can I 1s removed. lfvieferring more particularly to Fig. 1 and to the dotted line positions of the operating lever and stud therein, upon the initial rotation of the operating lever, cam face 29 rides against portion 17 of the stud and moves it to about the positionin which it is shown in full lines in said figure, as will be understood, to cause the cutting edge of the circular cutter to pierce the can and the rotatable gripping roller to be clamped against the outer side of the flange of the can'in opposed relation to the feeding roller. Continued rotation of the operating lever and feeding roller, obviously,' will cause the gripping roller, together with the circular cutter, to rotate and will feed the can forwardly against the cutting edge of the-circular cutter. It will be evident that the stud cannot at this time be removed from the position in which it is shown in full lines in Fig. 1, for the reason that the rotating force exerted against the roller is in a direction toward that end of the duplicate cam slots in which said stud flange backwardly against an end of a can 1 reaaiea is arranged. When the end of the can has been removed from the body portion thereof, the-flange can be released from the rollers by simply reversely turning the operating lever for a short distance, say, for example, from its full line position in Fig. 1 to or toward its dotted line position in said figure. The effect of the reverse turn is to feed the the gripping roller to cause stud 16 to ride backwardly in the cam slots, to or toward the dotted line position of the stud in F ig. 1, and the rotatable gripping roller to be moved away from the feeding roller to allow another can to be opened in the manner already fully set forth.
It is to be remarked that the can opener of this invention is capable of opening cans .-Iaving thus fully described the invention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a can opener, a pair of spaced apart upper and lower plates having duplicate, aligning slots, and can opening means as sociated with said plates.
2. In a can opener, a pair of spaced apart upper and lower plates having duplicate, aligning slots, a stud adapted to ride in said slots, said stud extending upwardly beyond said upper plate, a gripping roller upon said stud and between said plates, a feeding roller carried by said-upper plate, a cutter associated with one of the rollers, means for rotating the feeding roller, and a device upon said means adapted to engage said stud to move one of said rollers toward the other of said rollers.
3. In a can opener, a pair of spaced apart plates having duplicate, aligning slots, a stud in said slots and extending beyond one of said plates, a roller upon said stud and between said plates, a roller carried byone of said plates, a cutter associated with one ,of said rollers, means for rotating the rollers and cutter, and a device carried by said means adapted to engage said stud to move said rollers toward each other.
In a can opener, a pair of spaced apart upper and lower plates having duplicate, aligning slots, a stud. adapted to ride in said slots, said stud extendingv upwardly beyond said upper plate, a gripping roller upon said stud and between said plates, a short shaft mounted in said upper plate and carrying a feed roller, a cutter assoclated with one of said rollers, and. unitary means for rotating the feeding roller and for moving said rollers toward each other.
5. In a can opener, a pair of spaced apart plates having duplicate, aligning slots, a stud adapted to ride in said slots, said stud extending beyond one of said plates, a roller upon said stud and between said plates, a roller carried by one of said plates, a cutter associated with one of said rollers, and unitary means for rotating said rollers and for moving said rollers toward each other.
6. In a can opener, a pair of spaced apart plates having duplicate, aligning slots, a-
stud adapted to ride and rotate in said slots,
said stud extending beyond one of said' plates, a rotatable gripping roller upon said stud and between said plates, said gripping roller adapted to slide between said plates, a rotatable feeding roller upon one of said plates, a cutter associated with one of said rollers, means for rotating the feeding roller, and a device upon said means adapted to engagevsaid stud to move the gripping roller toward the feeding roller.
7. In a can opener, a pair of spaced apart the rollers apart when the member is rotated in opposite direction.

A oan'opener comprising a pair of spaced apart upper and lower plates having duplicate, aligning slots, a stud adapted to ride and rotate in said slots, said stud extending upwardly beyond said upper plate, a gripping roller and cutting edge upon said stud and between said plates, a short shaft mounted in said upper plate and carrying a feeding roller, means for rotating said shaft, and a cam face upon said means adapted to engage said stud -to move said gripping roller toward said feeding roller.
9. A can opener comprising a pair of spaced apart upper and lower plates having duplicate, aligning slots, a stud adapted to ride and rotate in said slots, said stud extending upwardly beyond said upper plate, a rotatable gripping roller and cutting edge upon said stud and between said plates, said gripping roller adapted to slide between said plates, a bearingblock upon said upperplate, a short shaft mounted in said bearing block and upper plate, a feeding roller carried b said shaft, a lever for rotating said sha and a cam face upon said lever adapted to engage said stud to move said gripping roller toward said feeding roller.
