To allwhom it vmay concern: r
Be itknown'thatl, Loom STERN, acitizen of .the United States, and -a ,-residentof New York,-borough 'otManhattam in the county of New Yorkandj State of NewYork, have invented .certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of whichuthe, following. 1s a'speciiication.;`
" This invention, relates to looks, and Iparticularly to that class thereofy which employs apair-` of opposed bolts, movable in opposite directions, for yengaging, al keeper.. The objecty of my ,improvements is tol provide a lock :ofltheclassfspeciiied, of simple constructionfand having means for coaction with thekeeper.,foncausingthe bolts to engage thekeeper,automatically. l
- iithvtheseJendsin view, my improvements comprise features illustratedl in .their preferred embodiment inthe-accompanying drawings, wherein/:,-

Fig. Sis arlsectional view similar to that ofi-iig.l 2, but showing the parts in dif,- ferent v poc'sitions-- than in theA earlier views.y The scale of allthreejviews is, the same.

Said latch is provided with foot 31 for engage- 95 ment with post 32- of shank 12, when that shank is in its retracted position, Fi 3. Keeper i7 lis preferably provided wit a passage 7a therethrough. and which passage is entered at either end by bolts 9, 10, respectively, when the look is operated to engage said keeper. l
The operation of my improved lock is as follows: The parts being in the relative positions of Fig. 3, with latch 25 projectlng 105 lfrom case 3 and foot 31 of said latch in'engagement with post 32 of shank 12, whereby bolts 9, 10 are maintained in their retracted positions, respectively, door V5 `is moved downwardly, Fig. 1, thereby causi bev-` eledend EL oflatch 25 to encounter the pressure of spring 30. As that latch is forced backwardly to the left, foot 31 there;
of rides 0H post 32, thereby permitting springs `13, 14 to act against shanks 11, 12, respectively, and whereby those Shanks and their respective bolts 9, 10 are Aforced vtoward each other into engagement with keeper 7, as shown in Fi 2. The movement ofshanks `11,112 from t epositions of Fig. 3't'those of Fig. 2 will swin lever 18 from the position of Fig. 3 to t at of Fig. 2. For unlocking,`actuator`19, or the key actuated'barrel, may be turned to move lever 18 and Shanks 11, 12 from the positions of Fig.` 2 to those yof Fig, therebyV withdrawing bolts 9,;10 from engagement with keeper' 7. Then if'the door be opened, latch 25 will be forced outwardlyby ,Spring operation.
thereby causing foot y31 to pass onto post 32 ofl shank `12,'i`vhereby said bolts will be heldfintheir retracted positions, respectively,"ready for' a repetition of the described 'Irclaimf e j f i 1.
