IMPROVEMENT IN PITMEN.
Specicationforming part of Letters Pafw/eltpq; 1412,611, dated September 9,1873; application filed Amira-1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB H. CAROTHERs, residing in Lewisburg,in the county of Union and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pitmen, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the anneXed drawing, in which the ligure illustrates a perspective View of my improved pitman.
This invention relates to pitmen composed of two parts united by means of springs, by Which they are rendered susceptible of clon gation and contraction. My improvement consists in the combination, with such a pitman, of a spring and cushion interposed between the parts thereof7 a slotted sleeve, and a pin or projection, secured, respectively, to the latter, substantially as hereinafter mere fully set forth. f
To enable others to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
The pitman A A is composed of two parts united `by the coiled spring B or other suitable means by Which the pitman may be made susceptible of contraction and elongation or yielding, so as not to check the speed of the m achine When in motion-an objection to Which the ordinary pitman is open, in consequence of its stiffness or inelasticity. The speed of the machine is thus prevented from being checked by the pitman yielding to the inequalities of the motion thereof. To form a cushion for and interposed between the opposite ends of the parts of the pitman is a block or cylinder of rubber, C, encircled by the coiled spring B. This block of rubber or cushion C also prevents the contact of the ends ofthe parts of the pitman, by which all concussion is overcome. A sleeve, D, is fitted to one of the parts of the pitman, and having an elongated slot, d, which receives a lug or projection, f, fastened to a ring or cylinder, F, confining the Opposite end of the coiled spring B to the other part of the pitman. The ring or band F acts to relieve the sleeve D of friction as it slides back and forth over the band F.
It is obvious that when a metallic pitman is employed the friction-band F can be dispensed with.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the pitman A AWith the spring B, cushion C, sleeve D d, and pin or projectionf, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I havehereunto signed my name this 25th day. 0f March, 1873, in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
JACOB Il. CAROTHERS.
