EDVIN ALLEN, OF NORWICH, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE ALLEN MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN FEED-BOXES FOR ENVELOPE=MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No- E LQJSQQE, dated September 9, 1873; application filed February 10, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN ALLEN, of Norwich, in New London county and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain Improved Feed-Box for Envelope-Machines, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of a simple mechanism attached to the feed-box in which the envelope-blanks are placed for gumming, having four points, which catch upon the four edges of the blanks, so as to effectually prevent more than one being raised by the gummer at each of its movements, the object being to wholly avoid the tendency, now existing in the operation of the machines, of raising two or more blanks at the same time.
Figure 1 is a top view of the feed-box of a machine partly filled with blanks with my separator attached, and adjusted ready for Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same taken through the line was, showing also the arrangement of the parts lying upon the left of said line.
A is the bed of the feed-box, and a a a a are its posts, shown partly filled with blanks B, the bed being secured to the upper ends of two upright arms, D, which are pivoted at at, so as to enable the feed-box, after raising the latch C, to be swung forward against the stops M to receive a new supply of blanks, all these parts being of the ordinary construction and a arrangement. In my improvement four upright guide-posts, e e c c, are added to the feed-box, and upon each pair of posts 6 e is hung the rectangular frame E, which extends across under the feed-bed A, and upward upon each side of it, having its ends formed and perforated so that they may slide freely up and down upon the posts 6 e. E E E E are small slotted and pointed plates, having the set-screws s inserted through the slots into the top of the frames F, by which the points of the plates may be adjusted so as to just catch upon the edges of the blanks B, on which they press by the weight of the frames 13. I is a rod, secured in the bottom of each of the frames F, and sliding freely through the guide G, which is secured upon the bottom of the feed-bed A. N is a pin, inserted in each of the rods I, so as to project over the stationary cams K, which are secured to the frame of the machine, so that when the latch C is raised and the feed-box swung forward upon its centers 01 d these pins N slide forward and upward upon the cams K, thereby causing the frames F to slide upon the three guides G e e, and raising the points of the separator to the top of the guides, to facilitate the refilling of the feed-box with blanks.
Should it be desirable to dispense with the guide-posts e e e e, the upright sides of the frames 13 may slide through small grooves made across the edges of the bottom of the feed-bed A, which arrangement would guide the points of the separator in the same manner.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination and arrangement of the frames F, guides G e c, and adjustable pointed plates E, when applied to the feed-box of an envelope-machine for the purpose of separating the blanks, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the frames F having guides and adjustable points, of the pins N and fixed cams K, substantially as and for p the purpose herein set forth.
EDWIN ALLEN. Witnesses:
