ony SUBDIVISION.
Application filed April 17,
To aZZe'vizomit mayconc'ern:
Be it known that I, W LLIA C. AN- THoNY, a citizen of the United States, re-- siding at Streator, in the county of La'Salle and State of lllinoisyhave invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Body Subdivisions, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in dumping bodies of the type adapted for use on vehicles and relates particularly to removable subdividing "gates adapted for use with such bodies. One object of my invention is to provide a dumping gate which may be applied to a dumping body and which will serve to subdivide it so that the 'loadof the body may be dumped in two or more parts. Other objects will appear from time to' time throughout the specifications and claims.
My invention is illustrated more or less diagrammatically in the accompanying drawings, wherein,
' Figure 1 is a side broken away; n y I Figure 2 is a similar view showing the body in the tipped or dumping position;
Figure 3 is a vertical section on the line 3-3 of Figure 1; c
Figure 4 is a detail of the door locking mechanism. l i i Like parts are designated by like characters throughout.
A is a truck frame suitably supported upon the running gear B C is arack mounted on the frame and adapted to cooperate with the toothed cam C which carries the frame C upon which the body D is mounted. E is a support for the forward end of the body upon which the angular member E is adapted to rest when the body is horizontal. E is a hook on the member E which overlaps the upper surface of the angular member E and so holds it in position. The member E is pivoted at E and provided with the forward extension E which may be depressed in order to free the body for dumping. F is an eccentrically hung tail gate which is normally held closed by means of the hooks F F which are mounted on the rod F F 3 is a lever on the rod F and adapted to contact the tire or wheel of the vehicle in the manner shown in Figure 2, to automatically open the gate when the body has reached the necessary inclination. F 4 is another lever on the rod elevation with parts Specification of Letters Patent. Pa'tg-n't gd engagement with the stops allowing the gate to open and to discharge in the dumping of the load has only a ,part of theconten'ts of F connected by means a .rhd F to the lever F which fis mounted on the bed, at F By means of y the lever F the tailgate may be opened at", anytime atthe will of the operator. I

the material from the body.
I is a prop "adapted to s pport "the I posit on after the'jfir'st part 86' been discharged. 7 operation of -my invention The use and are as follows: i
I In handling material in fdumping bodies able to dump 90 the body 58,13 v y it is frequently desirable to be one time. This is particularly-desirable in mixing concrete where, for example, a me chanical' mixer is used which the entire contents of the one time. In such a situation it is desirable to dump a fraction of the contents into the mixer and then subsequently to dump the remainder of the load. It may be desirable cannot take to dump the load in two parts or in more.
For such {a use my body is particularly adapted. Upon moving to the dumping p0? sition the rear tail gate tomatically or at the will of the operator.
As the body assumes the dumping position the pro-p falls into place and so maintains the body in the dumping position even after the first part of the load has been discharged. Subsequently at the will of the operator another fraction of the load is dis-- 1 10 I charged by means of openingthe next gate.
This process may be' continued until the racy gate eccenthe removablejbearings 65 G G H-H are lockingleverszmounted n and integral with the lever 75 v which carrles In its end the counter a chain secured to the dumping body at,95 I
may be opened aubody is empty. At that time the prop is removed and the body returns to the horizontal position. As this takes place all of the gates will close automatically.
It is often desirable to use a dumping body for a variety of purposes. For some uses it is necessary to dump the entire load as a unit. For other uses it is desirable to subdivide it as above outlined. With these requirements in mind I have designed my body so that the subdividing gates may be readily removable. Thus, in the formillus trated herewith it is only necessary to remove the two bearings G G when the gate may be removed bodily. When this has been done there remains in the body nothing but the two gate stops, and the bottom of the body is entirely clear and unobstructed. This is of particular importance'as it is essential in dumping bodies to have a smooth and unobstructed floor.
It will be understood of course that I might provide my body with any number of such subdividing single gates.
Although I have shown in my drawings an o'aerative structure still man chan es both in form, and relation of parts might be made without departing from the spirit of my invention and I wish, therefore, that my drawings be taken as in a sense diagrammatic.
I claim 1. A vehicle body having two stops on its inner sides and a door adapted to rest against one of them and having a hole to permit it to pass over the other and a movable lock on the door adapted to pass between the door and such second stop.
2. A vehicle body having two stops on its inner sides and a door adapted to rest against one of them and having a hole to permit it to pass over the other and a movable lock on the door adapted to pass between the door and such second stop and to cover said hole and to prevent said stop from passing through.
within said vehicle and intermediate its ends, locking means for gripping said gate by a wedge action, said locking means including pairs of fixed members on the wall of the vehicle body, the opposed faces of said members being at an angle one to the other, and a movable member mounted upon said gate and adapted to contact the inner face of one of said members and to force said gate against the inner face of the other of said members in a wedge action.
5. The combination of a dumping body with a gate within it and intermediate its ends, locking means for holding the gate closed at a point separated from its lower edge within said body, and means for opening said gate, and a counter weight adapted automatically to free said locking means to a position in readiness for permitting the same to lock.
6. In a dum )in vehicle a ate and lockt: ing means for gripping said gate, said means including a pair of members pivoted thereupon and adapted to engage stops on the side of said vehicle, chains upon the inner ends of said members and a rotary shaft upon said body, said chains secured at one end to said shaft, and means for rotating said shaft in one direction to raise said members to free said gate, and automatic means for rotating said shaft in the reverse direction to lower said member to the position in readiness for locking.
Signed at Streator, county of La Salle, and State of Illinois, this 14th day of April,
WM. o. ANTHONY.
