Be it known that I, Mnunrrs J. SANDIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of lllilkinsburc, in the county of Allegheny and State of)ennsylva1iia,` have invented a new and useful Improvement in'Rellable Fuses, of which the following is a specification, this application being a continuation,
blade members, shall facilitate the operation' of refilling the cartridge.
` Another object of my invention is to provide a cartridge-fuse terminal that, for compactness, shall comprise a transverse web of such dimensions as to permit ofits pas-` sage through the tube and of af form that, when it is disposedin co-operative relation with a complemental"removable plate therefor, constitutes a single composite disk of uniform thickness and greater diameter than the bore of the tube.
In practicing my invention, l provide ay fuse cartridge having blade-contact-terminal members at the ends thereof .and transversely-disposed closure, alining andpack ing members embracing the blades and of suchl relation to one another as to minimize the total thickness of the end walls of the cartridge.
Further, these members are connected to' permit the removal thereof as a single unit and formed to `permit the removal, transversely and from one side only, Vol', the4 blade members. n

Asillustrated in Fig. 4, each web 10comprises a flat piece of copper or other suitable material vof substantially fan shape. f An initially centrally-disposed three-sided rectangular tongue portion 12 is pressed out of the plane of the web 1() and bent into and, around a notch 13 in one edgeof vthe `same to constitute aV positioning lug, FigsQl, 2 and that engages a notch 14 at the end of the member' 1, and. prevents turning of the A. discoidal plate member 16,preferably` of the samematerial and thickness as the web 10, is centrally recessed and formed to closely embrace the web 10 in edge-to-edge relation therewith, whereby the member 16 and the webllO constitute substantially a single disk of uniform thickness and `greater di-k v9o4 terminal member4 with respect to the memameter than the bore of the tubular member 1.
A Jackinn' washer 17 of leather or--otheral washer 19, having a centrally disposedv slot 20, and the member 16 by screws 21 or other securing members that extend through holes 22 in the members 16, 17 andV 19 to form a removable compound washer or unitaryfwall structure 23 for mounting on the portion 8 adjacent the web 10 to permit the latter and the member 16 to assume the above-'described single-disk relation.
In order 'to prevent longitudinal displacement of the member 16 with respect to the web 10 andthe terminal member il, the portion `8-is provided with an edge notch 24 in which portions of the washers 16 and 1.9 are disposed adjacent the plate 10.
In F ig. 9, projections 25, suitably formed, as by knocking up the surface of the member el, sei-ve as means for preventing the. longitudinal displacement of the member 23.
In Fig. 10, a transverse groove 26, in one or both sides ofthe member l, serves to preventy the displacement of the member 23.
When the wall structure 23 is placed in operative relation to the member 4 and the web 10, it is maintained in position against the end of the member 1 by the flange 3 of t-he ferrule 2. The packing washer17 covers the engaging edges of the web 10 and the member 11.6 'to retard the escape of gas therebetween and may be of slightly greater diameter than the washer 19 to retard the escape of gas between the latter and the liange Then the element 6 is volatilized, removal of the ferrules 2 from the member 1 permits the withdrawal of the terminal members 4. @ne or both of the wallk structures 23 at the ends of the member 1 may be removed from the members a before or after replacing the volatilized element in position between the portions T. Thus, the members 4L, connected ,by a new element 6, may be placed in the member 1 from either `end thereof and the wall structures 23 replaced, after which the v ferrules 2 may be screwed into position on the member 1.
The unitary-wall structure or compound "washer 23 is adapted to be attached to. and
detached from. the member 4: by a single transverse sliding movement towards or from one edge only of the latter, thereby greatly facilitatingthe manipulation of the device.
The arrangement further serves as an efficient gas and flame check `to minimize the danger to surrounding objects, forms a neat and compact device, and by reason of the relation existing between the web 10 and the member 16, reduces the end wall to substantially a minimum of thickness and material.
While l have shown and described particular forms of my invention, many changes may be effected therein, without departing from the spirit and scope thereof, as set forth in the appended claims.
l claim as my invention 1. A refillable cartridge fuse comprising a tubular body member, a terminal member disposed at the end thereof and having a transverse web portion permitting the passing of the terminal member through the bore of the tubular member, a member cooperating with said web portion to constitute a closure wall of single thickness across the end and of'greater diameter than the bore of the tubular member, removable means for maintaining the members constituting said closure wall in operative relation on said terminal memberwhen the latter is separated from said tubular member, a removable ferrule for maintaining said closure wall` in operative position, and packing means overlying the joints .between the component members of said closure wall and between said closure member and said ferrule.

A. refillable cartridge fuse comprising atubular body member, a terminal member disposed at the end thereof and having a iived transverse web portion, the greatest dimension of vwhich is less than the diameter of the bore of the `tubular member, and a member disposed in the plane of, and cooperating with, said web portion to constitute a `plate of single thickness across the end of the tubular member and greater in diameter than the bore thereof.
3. In a reillable cartridge fuse, the combination with a tubular body member, of a closure and terminal device therefor comprising a plate member, the greatest dimension of which is less than the diameter of the bore of the tubular member, and second plate member co-operating with, and disposed in the plane of, said plate member to constitute a single composite plate of uniform thickness across the bore-of said tubular member.
4:. In a refill-able cartridge fuse, the combination with a tubular body member hav'- ing a notched end, of a closure and terminal member therefor comprising a blade member having a transversely projecting web portion, said web portion constituting a substantially flat plate having a central. portion pressed Voutwardly to create an opening for the reception of the blade member, and the material previously occupying the space of said opening being bent around to the outer edge of said plate to constitute a positioning lug forco-operation with said notch.
5. In a reflllable cartridge fuse, the combination with a tubular receptacle, a terminal member having a laterally disposed web means for closing the end of said receptacle and positioning said terminal member eomprising a plate for (1o-operating with, and
disposed in the plane of, said Web to con' stitute a ('omposite transverse closing plate for said tubular member*I a slotted packing Washer for abutment against said composite plateand a slotted metal Washer to be lslipped over said blade member.
6. A retillable cartridge fuse comprising a tubular body member, a terminal member disposed at one end thereof and having a transverse web portion permitting the passing of the terminal member through the bore of the tubular member and a plate member co-operating with, and disposed in the plane of, said web portion t0 constitute a composite transverse Wall plate of single thickness.
`7. In a refillable cartridge fuse, the combination with a tubular receptacle, of a terminalmember ltherefor and a closure comprising relatively `movable complementary discoidal members of unequal thickness and `forming, when operatively associated, a y closure of uniform thickness for the tubular receptacle, the thickness being substantially equal to that of one of the said members.
