To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. HUEBNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Photographic Printing Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates more particularly to improvements in photographic printing or composing apparatus of that kind which are intended for photographing any desired number of like or different original prints in any required predetermined and registered position and relative arrangement directly upon thesensitized surfaces of press plates which may be afterwards suitably finished and used in mechanical printing presses for printing in one or more colors.
hese apparatuses are adapted for various purposes, such for instance as, repeating prints from the same transparent printing plate or negative in a required arrangement on a single sensitized press plate, which,
after-development, is used for mechanically printing a plurality of impressions; for composing work where it is desired to place different subjects in a predetermined ar-- rangement on the press plate; and for making press plates for multicolor printing where it is neiessary to photograph prints in exact register on the diflerent'sensitized press plates that are used in presses for printing the different colors.
Such apparatus ordinarily comprise a support for the sensitized press plate; a support for holding a transparent photographic negative orpositive printing plate (hereinaftercalled the printing plate) in contact with the sensitized surface of the press plate, a pressure device or back support for causing an intimate, uniform contact of the sensitized surface with the printing plate; means for causing light to act through the printing plate for photographing the print on the sensitized surface; and adjusting means for producing a relative movement between the sensitized and printing plates parallel with the sensitized surface to enable prints to be made indesired predetermined locationson the sensitized plate and for producing a relative movement between the sensitized and printin plates toward and from each other to place said plates into and out of contact.

Anotheri'object is to provide novel means whereby the horizontally arranged sensitized plate may be inserted in and removed from the machine in a convenient manner, and in which the sensitized plate may be adjusted to various required positions for register with the printing plate without re uiring the operator to climb upon or into t e apparatus, even when large sensitized plates are used.
In an apparatus of this character it is essential that the printing plate be placed in a predetermined position witlrextreme accuracy.
Another object is to secure this result by providing positioning or registering means for the printing plate which is mounted and arranged in a novel manner adapting it to be moved out to an exposed, accessible position for making the required adjustments and to be then returned into its operative or printing position in the apparatus beneath the sensitized plate and there locked in place.
Another object is to provide novel and desirable means for adjusting the sensitized plate lengthwise and across the machine and for moving said plate vertically to and from its contact position with the printing plate.
Other objects are to provide means of screening or protecting the sensitized plate from light, except as required through the printing plate, comprising curtains connectedto the movable parts of the apparatus; and also to improve photographic printing apparatus of'the sort mentioned in the respects hereinafter described and set forth in the claims.

The stationary or main frame in the machine shown in the drawings comprises a front standard or casting 10 having a horizontal top rail 10 and legs 10", a similar rear standard 11 having a top rail 11 and legs 11", and side frame members 12 and 13 connecting said front and rear standards. A base plate or casting 14 extends between and connects'the lower portions of the side members 12 and 13 and has a part 15 which extends forwardly beyond the front standard 10, see Figs. 1, 3 and 8.
The means shown for supporting the printing plate A include a substantially rectangular horizontal carriage 20 provided with a circular opening 21 over which is ad justably secured a' printing plate holder C on an index head D rotatably secured in the opening in the table top.
The index head consists of a circular disk 25 having a central opening and a peripheral gear ring 26. The plate holder C comprises a rectangular open frame carrying a fixed glass or transparent supporting plate 27, on the face of which the printing plate A isadjustably secured by holding jaws or devices 28. which are movably secured on blocks 29 which hold the glass supporting plate 27: in position. The plate holder bears against a suitable stop blocks 30 and is secured in this position by double faced locking wedges or devices 31 and 31. The index head is rotated by a pinion 32 which meshes with the gear ring 26, and is locked in the required-position by a dog 33 which is adapted to be moved into and out of engagement with the teeth of the gear ring y a screw 34 and is adjustable tangentially relative to the index head to enable a fine. accurate adjustment of the index head. The
printing plate holder and rotatable index head are constructed. arranged and adjusted substantially as fully shown for instance in my Patent No. 1,377.249. dated May 10, 1921, and further description thereof herein is unnecessary.
In the construction shown in the drawings the carriage 20 is provided at its four corners with legs or supports 41) at the lower ends of which are supporting rollers or the like 41. Two of these rollers 41. at one side of the carriage, are grooved and roll on a guide rail 42 extending lengthwise of the apparatus on the base plate 14 and having an upwardly projecting rib 43 which extends into the grooves of the rollers. The other pair of rollers 40 have smooth peripheries and roll on a. flat rail 44 on the base 14 parallel to the guide rail 42. By providing the guide rail 42 with the rib 43 entering the grooved rollers and having the other rail 44 flat, the carriage will be guided in a true. straight path without binding on the rails.
hen it is desired to adjust or arrange a printing plate on the printing plate holder C the carriage 20 is moved outwardly on its guides to a position beyond the front standard 10 of the apparatus as shown in Fig. 8. A swinging registering or centering device 50 is hinged on the carriage 20 for accurately centering and positioning the printing plate. This positioning device. which is similar to that more fully shown and described in my Patent No. 1,377,249, above mentioned includes a frame having side bars 51 and longitudinal and transverse guide bars on which are movablecentering devices 53, 54. each having a movable foot or ring carrying a transparent registering device provided with cross lines. These registerin devices are adapted to be moved on the guide bars parallel with the face of the printing plate in directions at right angles to each other and register marks or cross lines on the printing plate enable said printing plate to be accurately centered or positioned on the plate holder. The registering devices 53, 54 are also adapted to be moved by suitable means vertically toward and from the printing plate, so that the printing plate may be moved under them freely and so that variations in thickness of the printing plates may be allowed for. The side bars 51 are preferably provided with legs or depending parts 52 which rest on the carriage 20 and support the centering frame above and parallel with the printing plate when in use. This registering or positioning device is constructed and operates substantially like that shown in a prior application.
The centering frame is pivoted on a rod or shaft 56'at the front of the carriage 20, and when not in use is adapted to be swung out-- wardly and over to an invertedposition-in which it will not interfere with the operation of the apparatus. In this position, see Figs. 2 and 3, it rests with the side bars 51 on forwardly extending brackets or arms 57 on the front legs 40 of the carriage 20. Any other suitable means for accurately positioning the printing plate on'the plate holder, could be arranged in the manner described on the printing plate carriage.
After the printing late A has been accurately adjusted on the plate holder C, as described, the carriage 20 is moved into the apparatus and locked in its operative or printing position beneath the sensitized plate, by means preferably constructed as follows:
One of the rear legs 40 of the carriage 20 is provided with a rearwardly extending arm 60 having a lateral lug 61 to which is attached an endless chain or the-like 62. This chain 62 passes around sprocket wheels 63, 64, suitably mounted at the front and rear ends respectively, of the main frame of the apparatus. The shaft 63 to which the front sprocket wheel 63 is ured, is connected by bevel pinions 65 and 66 to a short shaft 67 which extends outwardly at the front of the apparatus and is provided with a clutch collar 68, or is otherwise fashioned for the application of a suitable crank for turning it. This construction provides a simple and desirable mechanism for easily moving the printing plate carriage on the guides, as required. The carriage is locked in its inward or printing position by an adjustable lockingdevioe which is preferably constructed as follows :-(see particularly Figs. 6 and 9-11.) j
A movable slide or block 70 having lateral guide ribs 71 is mounted in guide 'ways 72 In an opening formed in a cross member 7 3 of the main frame. Said slide is provided with an upwardly projecting lugvor part 74 against which an upwardly projecting stop 75 on the carriage 20 is adapted to strike when moving the printing plate to its printing position. The rear end of a rock shaft 76 bears in ahole in the lug 74' and said shaft carries a finger 77 which is adapted to be turned downwardly in front of the stop 7 5 of the carriage, thereby locking the carriage in place. The lock slide 70 has a de ending In 78 providedwith a threaded hole in wh ch turns a hand screw 79 journaled in the member 7 3 of the frame. When the apparatus is first assembled the lock slide 70' is adjusted by means of the hand screw 79, carrying with it the stop 7 4 and locking finger 77, until the stop is in the correct initial position for properly lo eating the carriage and the printing plate in printing position. After the stop has been once adjusted the hand screw is not used, except to correct the adjustment or take up any slight difference due to wear in the contacting parts. The rock shaft 75 extends through the front of the machine and is provided with a handle 80 for rocking it to lock and release the carriage 20.
The foregoing construction provides a very desirable and convenient means for accurately positioning a printing plate on a table or carriage of suitable height, which can be readily moved so as to accessible and can be easily moved and secured accurately in the printing position.
The plate holder E for the sensitized plate B may be of any suitable construction. As shown, it comprises opposite end bars 81, 82, connected by side rods 83 to form an open rectangular frame. The sensitized plate is secured at one edge by suitable clamps to the bar 82, and at its opposite edge to a movable stretching bar 84 which is provided at its ends with threaded holes in which turn screw shafts 84 journaled on the holder frame adjacent the side rods 83. These screw shafts can be turned simultaneously orseparately by suitable means (not shown) for moving the bar 84 for stretching the sensitized plate. I
The following means are shown in the drawings for adjustably mounting the sensitized plate holder E in ,the apparatus to permit of horizontal movements of the sensitized plate to different positions relative to the printing plate and to allow the sensitized plate to be moved into and out of contact with the printing plate for printing and for making said horizontal adjustments of the sensitized plate without interference with the printing plate, and to allow the sensitized plate and printing plate to be moved into or out of the apparatus.
A carrying frame F for the holder E is arranged to move horizontally longitudinally of the apparatus in a main carriage G, which in turn is movable horizontally transversely of the apparatus in guides which are adjustable vertically on the main frame of the apparatus.
The carrying frame F- comprises" a rectangular casting or member having side angle bars 85 which are connected at one end by a cross bar 86 and at the opposite end by upper and lower spaced cross; bars 87, 88. The side angle bars 85 are arranged with their horizontal flange 89 at the bottom ro-' jecting inwardly and'the plate holder E is adapted to be inserted through the space between the cross bars 87, 88 and slid onto the flanges 89 until the bar 82 of the holder strikes against stops 90 at opposite ends of the cross bar 86 of the carrying frame. For properly guiding the plate holder E into the carrying frame, horizontal guide brackets 94, Figs. 1 and 3 are preferably provided on the standards 11. One of the brackets, see Figs. 1 and 3 is provided with an upwardly extending rib 95 which is adapted to enter a groove on the underside of the plate holder E. This permits the holder to be conveniently placed in position by means which are in an exposed or accessible place. To insert the holder E into the carrying frame F, the carrying frame is moved to the left in Fig. 3 until the ham 87 are adjacent the guide brackets 94. The holder E may then be easily and conveniently manipulated. When the holder E has been inserted into the carrying frame in contact with the stops 90, it is locked in place by suitable means. such as a latch 96 pivoted on the carrying frame 'by a locking screw 97, which permits the latch to be swung upwardly out of the way when inserting or removing the holder. To hold the latch in either position it is only necessary to tighten the locking screw which is provided with a handle or knob for turning it. Each of the side bars 85 of the carrying frame is preferably provided with a pair of rollers 98 for causing the frame to travel or move freely in the main carriage I.
he actuating means for so moving the carrying frame F preferably comprise a toothed rack 100 formed on or secured to one of the side bars 85 of the carrying frame and meshing with a .pinion 101. This pinion is fixed to the inner end of a short shaft 102 journaled in a bearing bracket 103 on the main carriage G. A clutch collar or other means at the outer end of the shaft for engagement by a suitable crank handle provides means for rotating the pinion and moving the carrying frame longitudinally on the main carriage. This constitutes the quick or coarse adjusting mechanism. To secure a fine or accurate final adjustment of the carrying frame the shaft 102 is preferably provided with a worm wheel 104 which isadapted to be engage by a worm 105 on a shaft mounted on an eccentric bushing journaled on the bracket 103 and rovided with a hand wheel for rotating it.
he worm 105 is normally out of mesh with the worm wheel. and is thrown into mesh therewith by turning the eccentric bushing in its bearing.
Any other suitable means ma be provided for adjusting the carrying rame.
The ad'ustment 0f the carrying frame is prefera ly indicated by a suitable graduated scale 106 which is fixed to the carrying frame and in the movement of the frame, moves beneath a microscopic projectin device 107 secured to the bracket 103. Tl e scale is preferably made of glam or other transparent material and is illuminated by a small electric lamp 108. I
The main carriage G is preferably in the form of a rectangular 0 en frame and com' prises longitudinal U-smpe bars 110 con nected by transverse bars 111. The lower flanges of the bars 110 form tracks for the rollers 98 of the carrying frame and the frame is guided by the contacting of the rollers with the upper flanges of said bars. The main carriage G is mounted and adjusted transversely of the apparatus in the guides H by means similar to those used for the carrying frame F, said means including a toothed rack 112 on one of the bars 111 which is engaged by a pinion 113 on a shaft 114. The shaft is rotated for the coarse adjustment by a crank handle 115 and for the fine adjustment by a worm 116 and worm wheel 117. The main carriage is provided with rollers 118 for supporting it in the guides. A scale 119 and microscopic projecting device 120 similar to those before described indicate the adjustment of the main carriage.
The main carriage guide H comprises two horizontal guide bars extending transversely of the apparatus inside of and adjacent to the front and rear standards 10 and 11, each being of substantially U-shape in cross section with the flanges extending inwardly the lower flange having secured thereto, or formed thereon, a track 126 for the rollers 118 of the main carriage. Each leg 10 and 11 of the main frame is provided with a boss or lug 127 in which a vertical screw 128 is journaled and each of these screws works in the threaded hole of a nut or boss 129 on a depending lug 130 on one of the guide bars H. Each guide bar is also provided with upright guide extensions 131 confined and adapted to slide in vertical gulde ways 133 on the adjacent main frame standard.
. The screws 128 are turned for raising and lowering the guides H to move the sen sitized plate B into or out of contact with the printing plate A, preferably by the following means:
Extending parallel with each other at opposite sides of the apparatus are two longitudinal shafts 134 journaled in hearings on the 1egs10 and 11 of the frame. Spiral gears 135 on these shafts mesh with spiral gears 136 -on the screws 128. The spiral gears 135 at the rear ends of the shafts 134 also engage spiral gears 137 on a transverse shaft 138 journaled on the standard 11 so that by rotating one of the shafts 134, all of the screws 128 will be simultaneously operated to move the carriage guides. The opposite ends of the shafts 134 preferably extend out through the standards 10 and 11 and are provided with clutch collars or other means for the application of a suitable crank handle 139. This construction enables the operator to adjust the carriage guides from either the front or rear of the apparatus.
Means of other construction may be used for lmveringand raising the main carriage.
Adustable means are also, preferably provided to limit the downward movement of the guide frame H to compensate for variations in the thickness of the printing plate A or sensitized plate I). or both. The construction shown in the drawings for the pur:
pose is as follows :-(see Figs. 6 and 7).
A stop block or limit stop 139? having a limited vertical movement in a guide 139 in the standard 10 is moved by means of a screw 139 swivelled in the stop block and having a screw-threaded engagement with :1 lug on the standard. The rear .end of the stop block 139 is adapted to be engaged by a shoulder 131 on one of the guide extensions 131 of the main carriage guide. The front end of the stop block has an index mark which cooperates with a scale on the standard 10 to indicate the amount of the ad'ustment. See Fig. 6.

Extending upwardly from the frame standards 10 and 11, midway between the ends thereof. are hollow posts 140, 141, connected at their upper ends by a horizontal hollow bar or cross head 142. A supporting arm or bracket 143 for-a pressure head or block I is swivelled on the post 141 by means of a bearing sleeve 144, and its free end is also in the form of a bearing sleeve 144 for the reception of a screw shaft 145 at the upper end of which is a bevel gear 146, see Figs. 3 and 12. The lower end of the screw shaft 145 turns in a screw sleeve 147 which telescopes inthe bearing sleeve and is r0 vided with vertical grooves 148 into w ich project tongues 149 on a bearing ring 150. This ring surrounds the lower end of the bearing sleeve 144 and is retained thereon by a flange 151; The pressure block or head I is removably and adjustably secured to the lower end of the sleeve 147. Any suitable means may be used for this purpose, those shown in the drawings comprising horizontal flanged guides 153 rigid on the lower end of the screw sleeve and a split clamping block 154 which slides in the guides 152. The clamping block has a circular opening into which extends a cylindrical stud 154 projecting up from the pressure head, and a wedge block 154 is located between the bevelled ends of the split clamping block. A rod 155, Fig. 13, passes through one end of the split block through the wedge block and its threaded end turns ina threaded hole in the other end of the split clamping block. By turning this screw rod the clamping block is contracted around the stud 154 of the pressure head, and the wedge block is forced out against the guide 153. This locks theblock by frictiom This: construction also provides means for allowing a radial adjustment of the pressure block relative to the screw shaft and also the rotation of the pressure head about either the screw shaft or the stud 154 as an axis. It is only necessary to loosen the clamping block 154 by means of the rod 155 when the pressure head may be moved radially in the guides 153 or turned about the stud 154 as a center, and again locked in place. The pres sure head can be turned about the screw shaft 145 by loosening the bearing ring 150, which may be turned on the flange 151 and locked in any desired position by a set screw 157.
For advancing or retracting the pressure head toward and from the back of the sensitized plate the screw 145 is rotated by turning the bevel gear 146, which causes the screw sleeve 147 to move up or down on the screw shaft, the sleeve being prevented from turning by its connection with the ring 150. The bevel gear 146 is preferably actuated by a bevel pinion 160 fixed on a shaft 161 which extends through the cross head 142 and is journaled in hearings in the opposite ends thereof and is provided with a hand wheel 161 at each end for turning it.
The swinging support 143 for the pressure head is swivelled on the post 141 for pen mitting the pressure device to "be swung from the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 to a position at one side of the apparatus, where the pressure head may be readily accessible for changing or adjusting it. see Figs. '1 and 3.
It is locked in the operative position and released to permit it to be swung out as described, preferably by the following means.

A handle or crank 168 is secured on the end of the rock shaft and is retained in the position shown in Fig. 2 by a spring pressed pin 168 which is normally received in a hole 169 irrthe cross-head 142. cured from endwise movementon the shaft 161 above the bevel gear 146 is arranged to slide in a seat 170? in the cross-head 142 and has a slot 171 in its under side, said slot having a longitudinal inclined face 172, see Fig. 5. When the parts are in the position shown in Figs. 2 and 12, a spring pressed pin 173,,seated in the hub of the bevel gear 146, enters the slot 171 and locks the swinging support 143 and pressure device in operative position 'over the printing plate. \Vhen it is desired to release the pressure device, the crank 168 is moved until its spring pressed pin 168" enters a hole 174 in the cross-head 142, thereby actuating-the A locking block 170 so rock shaft 165 and moving the shaft 161 and locking block 170 to the right. as shown in Fig. 3. This movement causes the inclined cam face to depress the pin 173 out of the slot 171 in the locking block 170 so that the swinging support can be swung on its pivot to carry the pressure head to one side of the apparatus. The movement of the shaft 161 to the right will alsodisengage the bevel pinion from the bevel gear 146 against the action of a spring 17 5 surrounding the shaft and bearing against a fixed stop 175. 'There is suliicient play between the hubs of the hand wheels 161 and the ends of the cross-head 142 to permit the endwise movement of the shaft 161. \Vhen the swinging support is swung back to place the pressure head in operative position, the spring pin 173 will pass through a transverse notch 176 in the bottom of the cros head 142 and engage a bevel edge 176 on its locking block 170 which depresses the pin. \Vhen the pin reaches the slot 171 in the locking block it will spring into the same and lock the pressure device in place.
For swinging the arm 143 the lower end of its bearing sleeve 144 is preferably formed or provided with a worm wheel 177 which is engaged by a worm 178 on a shaft 179 journaled in a housing 180 on the standard 11. The worm is actuated by a suitable hand wheel 181, by turning which the arm 143 may be easily moved into or out of its operative position.
represents a lamp for illuminating the printing plate A to print an image thereof on the sensitized plate B. The lamp is shown as being surrounded by a hood or reflector 191 to direct the light towards the printing plate. When adjusting this light. or when withdrawing the printing plate carriage 2G to change printing plates or for other purposes, and when other actinic light is used in the room containing the apparatus the sensitized plate should be protected from like action. The meansshown for accomplishing this are as follows A flexible curtain or mask 192-, Fig. 3 attached to a spring roller 193 is arranged transversely of the apparatus and the roller is journaled on the sides 12 -and'13 of the frame. The -free end of the curtain is secured to the carriage 20. Another similar curtain 195 is attached on a spring roller 196 journaled on front end of the carriage 20 and the free end of this curtain is connected to a rod 197 which is adapted to be engaged with hooks 198 on the front standard 10, the rod 197 being held in place by the tension of the spring roller 196. The location of the hooks 198 is such that glen the roller 196 for the curtain 195 reaches these hooks during the outward travel of the carriage 2 0, the curtain will be completely Wound up and the r d 97 will be. taken off the hooks 198 by the hooks 198 on the carriage and the curtain will remain rolled up on the front of the carriage 20. l pon returning the carriage to its inward position the rod 197 will be engaged by and caught on the hooks 198 and held as before. Another pair of curtains 199 attached to spring rollers 200 are arranged longitudinally of the apparatus, one roller on each of the side members 12 and 13, see Fig. 6. the free ends of the curtains being attached to books 201 on the under side of the bars 111) of the main sensitized plate carriage (l. When. therefore. the printing plate carriage 20 is moved in either direction. one of the curtains 192. 196 will wind up on its roller while the other will unwind. and when the main carriage H is moved the curtains 199 will be actuated in a similar manner. This construction positively prevents any light action upon the sensitized plate during the movement and adjustment of the printing and sensitized plates.
For the purpose of permitting the lamp 190 to be adjusted while the printing and sensitized plates are in the printing position. an additional curtain or screen 292. mounted on a spring roller 293 is used. This curtain, when completely rolled upon its roller is normally located at one side of the light opening in the carriage 20. but when it is desired to use it for the purpose stated, it is unwound and a rod 204 at its free end is secured to hooks 205 at the opposite side of the lightopening, thus preventing access of light to the sensitized surface.
I claim as my invention 1. In a photographic printing apparatus, the combination of a carriage supporting a transparent printing plate in a horizontal position, a holder for supporting a sensitized plate horizontally above said printing plate, a support in which said holder is adjustable horizontally for placing different portions of the sensitized plate opposite the printing plate, and means for lowering and raising said support to place the sensitized plate into and out of contact with the printing plate. said printing plate carriage being movable horizontally for carrying the printing plate from its operative position beneath the sensitized plate and supporting it in an accessible position at one side of the sensitized plate.
2. In a photographic printing apparatus, the combination ofa carriage supporting a transparent printing plate in a horizontal position, a holder for supporting a sensitized plate horizontally above said printing plate, a support in which said holder is adustable horizontally in different directions at an angle to each other for placing different portions of the sensitized plate opposite the printing plate. and means for lowering, and raising said support to place the sensitized plate into and out of contact with the printing plate, said printing plate carriage being movable horizontally for carrying the printing plate from its operative position beneath the sensitized plate and supporting it in an accessible position at one side of the sensitized plate.
3. In a photographic printing apparatus, the combination of a carriage supporting a transparent printing plate in a horizontal position. a holder forsupporting a sensitized plate horizontally above said printing plate. a carrying frame for said holder, a carriage for said carryingframe. a support for said carriage, said carrying frame and carriage being adjustable horizontally in different directions for placing different portionsof the sensitized plate opposite the printing plate, and means for lowering and raising said support to place the sensitized plate into and out of" contact with the printing plate, said printing plate carriage being movable horizontally for carrying the printing plate from its operative position beneath the sensitized plate and supporting it in an accessible position at one side of the sensitized plate.
4. In a photographic printing apparatus, the combination of a carriage supporting a transparent printing plate in a horizontal position, a holder for supporting a sensitized plate horizontally above said printing plate, a support in which said holder is adjustable horizontall for placing different portions of the sensitized plate opposite the printing plate, means for lowering and raising said support to place the sensitized plate into and out of contact with the printing plate, and a pressure device for causing an intimate contact between the printing and sensitized plates, said printing plate carriage and pressure device being movable laterally from their operative positions opposite the sensitized plate to side positions where they are readily accessible.
5. In a photographic printing apparatus, the combination of a carriage supporting a transparent printing plate in a horizontal position. a holder for supporting a sensitized plate horizontally above said printing plate, a support in which said holder is adjustable horizontally for placing different portions of the sensitized plate opposite the printing plate, means for lowering and raising said support to place the sensitized plate into and out of contact with the printing plate, a pressure device for causing an intimate contact between the printing and sensitized plates, and a movable support for said pressure device, said printing plate carriage and support for the pressure device being movable laterally from their operative positions opposite the sensitized plate to side positions where the printing plate and pressure device are readily accessible,
6. In a photographic printing apparatus, the combination ot a carriage supporting a transparent printing plate in a horizontal position, a holder for supporting a sense tized plate horizontally opposite the printv readily accessible.
7. In a photographic printing apparatus,
the combination of a carriage supporting a transparent printing plate in "a horizontal position, a holder for supportingfa' sensitized plate horizontally opposite the printing plate, means for effecting a relative adjustment of said plates for placing different portions of one plate opposite the other plate, means for relatively. moving said plates for placing them into and out of con tact. a pressure device for pressing said plates together, and a laterally movable support for the pressure device, said printing plate carriage and said support for the pres sure device being movable for carrying the printing plate and pressure device from their operative positions opposite said plates to side positions where the printing plate and pressure device are readily accessible.
8. In a photographic printing apparatus, the combination of a carriage supporting a transparent printing plate in a horizontal position, a holder for supporting a sensitized plate horizontally opposite the printing plate, means for e ecting a relative adjustment of said'plates for placing different portions of one plate opposite the other plate, means for relatively moving said plates for placing them into and out of contact, a pressure device for pressing said 1 plates together, a laterally movable support for the pressure device. said support being movable for carrying the pressure device from its operative position opposite said plates to a side position where is it readily accessible, and means for moving the pressure device toward said plates to press the plates together. In a photographic printing apparatus, the combination of a carriage supporting a transparent printing plate in a horizontal position, a holder for supporting a sensitized plate horizontally opposite the printing plate, means for effecting a relative adjustment of said plates for placing different ortions of one late opposite the other p ate, means for re atively moving said. plates for placing them into and out 0i contact, a
pressure device for pressing said plates together, a laterally movable support for the pressure device, said support being movable for carrying the pressure device from its operative position opposite said plates to a side position where it is readily accemible, means for holding said support rigid with the pressure device opposite said. plates, and means for moving the pressure device toward said plates to press the plates together.
10. In a photographic printing apparatus, the combination of a carriage supporting a trans arent printing plate in a horizontal position, a holder for supporting a sensitized plate horizontally opposite the printing plate, means for effecting a relative adjustment of said plates for placing different portions of one plate opposite the other plate, means for relatively moving said plates for placing them into and out of contacta pressure device for pressing said plates together, a laterally movable support for the pressure device, said support being movable for carrying the pressure device from its operative position opposite said plates to a side position where it is readily accessible, the pressure device being adjust-- able on its support to different relations to said plates, and means for moving the pressure device toward said plates to press the plates together.
11. In. a photographic printing apparatus, the combination of a carriage supporting a transparent printing plate in a horizontal position, a holder for supporting a sensitized plate horizontally opposite the printing plate, means for effecting a relative adjustment of said plates for placing different portions of one plate opposite the other plate, means for relatively moving said plates for placing them into and out of contact, a pressure device for pressing said plates together, a laterally movable support for the pressure device, said support being movable for carrying the pressure device from its operative position opposite said plates to a side osition where it is readily accessible, a device for locking said support with the pressure device in operative position, and operating means for the pressure device which are placed into and out of operative condition by the actuation of said lockin device.
12. n a photographic printing apparatus, the combination of a carriage supporting a transparent printing plate in a horizontal position, a holder for supporting a sensitized plate horizontally opposite the printing plate, means for effecting a relative adjustment of said plates for placing different ortions of one plate opposite the other p ate, means for relatively moving said plates for placing them into and out of contact, a carrying frame for the sensitized plate holder, and a pressure device pposite the sensitized plate for pressing said plates together, the apparatus being constructed and arranged to permit said sensitized plate holder to be removed horizontally from said carrying frame between said printing plate carria e and pressure device.
13. n a photographic printing apparatus, the combination of a carriage supporting a transparent printing plate in a horizontal position, a holder for supporting a sensitized plate horizontally opposite the printing plate, means for effecting a relative adjust ment of said plates for placing different portions of one plate opposite the other plate, means for relatively moving said plates for placing them into and out of contact, and an open ended carrying frame for the sensitized plate holder, said plate holder being removable from the carrying frame through its open end.
14. In a photographic printing apparatus, the combination of a carriage supporting a transparent printing plate in a horizontal position, a holder for supporting a sensitized plate horizontally opposite the printing plate, means for effecting a relative adjustment of said plates for placing different )0!- tions of one plate opposite the other plate, means for relatively moving said plates for placing them into and out of contact, an open ended carr ing frame for the sensitized plate holder, sald plate holder being removable from the carrying frame througlnits open end, and a guide for iding the plate holder into saidcarrying rame.
15. In a photographic printing apparatus, the combination of a carriage supporting a transparent printing plate in a horizontal position, a holder for supporting a sensitized plate horizontally above said printing plate, means -for effecting a relative adjustment of said plates for placing different portions of one plate opposite the other plate, means for relatively moving said plates for placing them into and out of contact, said printing plate carriage being movable horizontally for carrying the rinting plate from beneath the sensitized p ate and supporting it in an accessible position at one side of the sensitized plate, and a positioning device for the printing plate mounted on said carriage and movable to an operative position over the printing plate when said carriage is in said side position.
16. In a photographic printing apparatus, the combination of a carriage supporting a transparent rinting plate in horizontal position, a hol er for supporting a sensitized plate horizontally above said printing plate, means for effecting a relative adjustment of said plates for lacing different portions of one plate opposite the other plate, means for relatively moving said plates for placing them into and out of contact, said printing plate carriage being movable horizontally for carrying the printing plate from beneath the sensitized plate and supporting it in an accessible position at one side of the sensitized plate, anda positioning device for the printing plate comprising a frame hinged on said carriage and movable to a position over the printing plate when saidcarriage is in said side position, and registering devices adjustable on said frame over the vface of the printing plate.
17. In a photographic printing apparatus, the combination of a carriage supporting a transparent printing plate in a horizontal position, a holder for supporting a sensitized plate horizontally above said printing plate, means for relatively moving said plates for placing them into and out of contact, a source of light beneath said printing plate, said sensitized plate holder and printing plate carriage being adjustable horizontally relatively to each other, and screens cooperating respectively with said holder and carriage for shielding the sensitized plate from light.
18. In a photographic printing apparatus, the combination of a carriage supporting a transparent printing plate in a horizontal position, a holder for supporting a sensitized plate horizontally above said printing plate, means for relatively moving said plates for placing them into and out of contact, a source of light beneath said printing plate, said sensitized plate holder and printing plate carriage being adjustable horizontally in diiferent directions, and screens movable res ectively with said holder and carfiakge f0 shielding the sensitized vplate from 19. In a photographic printing apparatus, the combination of a carriage supporting a transparent printing plate in a horizontal position, a holder for supporting a sensitized plate horizontally above said printing plate, means for effecting a relative adjustment of said plates for placing different portions of one plate opposite the other plate, means for relatively moving said plates for placing them into and out of contact, said printing plate carriage being movable horizontally for carrying the printing plate from beneath the sensitized plate and supportin it in an accessible position at one side 0 the sensitized plate, means for pressing said plates into close contact, means for illuminating said printing plate for making prints therefrom on said sensitized plate, and a positioning device for the printing plate mounted on said apparatus and movable to an operative position over the printing plate when said carriage is in said side position.
