INVENTOR ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IPATRIGK J. DWY-EB, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
$ FETY-BAZ -S Q I NG DEVICE,
pe i -Q Lett t n Patented Aug. 8, 1922.
Application filed September 4, 1919, Serial 1191321544, Renewed April 13, 1922. Serial No. 552,229.
To all; whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PATRICK J. DWYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Razor-Stropping Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to stropping devices for safety razor blades, and has for an object to provide a stropper particularly designed to receive a blade of the type having cutting edges at both sides, means being ,rovided to protect one edge while the other is being stropped, to thereby prevent injury to the strop and to permit more convenient manipulation of the device as an entirety.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character set forth including a shield or guard pivotally mounted to engage either edge of the blade with means for automatically securing the guard in place subsequent to its proper adjustment.
In addition to the foregoing, this invention comprehends improvements in the details of construction and arrangement of parts, to be hereinafter described and particularly set forth in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings in which similar and corresponding parts are desig nated by the same characters of reference throughout the several views in which they appear.
Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a safety razor blade holder of conventional type illustrating the embodiment therein of my improvement.
Figures 2 and 3 are transverse and longitudinal sections respectively taken on the line 2-2 and 33 of Figure 1.
Figure 4- is a detail section taken on the line 1- 1 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary view in plan of a modified form of my invention and Figure 6 is another modified form of my invention illustrating separable parts there- With reference to Figures 1 to l of the drawings, 10 indicates a plate forming a part of a conventional form of stropping device, the latter having an extension 11 which may be pivotally held within a casing or the like. The blade 10 is provided with a pair of slots 12 to receive the pins 13 trunnions 16 are formedupon'the ends of the plate 14, said trunnion seating parallel end portions 17 of a guard member, the guard portion 18 of which connects the member 17. The adjacent faces or edges of the portion 17 are formed with 'Vshaped grooves 18 and the endsof the plate 14. are
'evelled to seat in said groove when the guard member is in one adjusted position or the other as the case may be to secure the guard member against movement.
In operation, the parts are assembled in the manner stated and the blade is stropped in the usual manner. It will be observed that the guard 18 lies in contact with one cutting edge of the blade, thereby protecting the same and preventing the edge from becoming injured or the strop from becoming mutilated. After one edge has been stropped it is but necessary to rotate the guard 18 whereupon the port-ion 17 thereof will spread apart slightly to release themselves from. the bevelled end of the plate 14 whereupon the guard may be moved around into contact with the opposite edge of the blade in the manner illustrated in dotted lines in Figure 2.
In Figure 5 I have illustrated a modified form of the invention in which the trunnion 16 may be threaded and extended beyond the portion 17 to receive a nut 18 whereby, by tightening the nut the guard may be positively held in place against movement.
form of my invention in which the blade 1O corresponding to. the blade 10 of the first form is formed at one end with a threaded socket 19 in which to receive the threaded member of a handle 20, the latter being furnished with conventional type of safety razor outfit, the handle being used for the safety razor blade holder. In other respects this form of the invention is identical to the form first described.
Thus, it will be seen that I have proi In Figure 6 I have illustrated a modified vided a novel device which will positively and effectively protect one edge of a double edge blade while the other is being stropped and will also permit the guard or protected device to be almost instantaneously adjusted to guard either one edge or the other as desired. It will also be apparent that the addition of the improvement above set forth involves a negligible expense and that the advantages to be obtained by-tlie use thereof are great and many in compari son to the form of stropping devices heretofore provided. c
\Vhile I have illustrated and described my invention with some degree of particularity, I realize that in practice various alterations therein may be made. I therefore reserve the right and privilege of changing the form of the details of construction or otherwise altering the arrangement or" the correlated parts without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. A stroppmg device including a plate, a pair of studs thereon, a second plate having slots to receive the stud and adapted to receive a double edge blade between said plate, the first plate having its ends bevelled, a guard member having parallel ends the inner faces of said ends being grooved to receive the bevelled ends of the first plate whereby the guard may be automatically held in either one position or the other adjacent either edge of the first plate, and means for pivotally mounting said guard for movement in the manner stated.
2. A stropping device including a blade holder, means for supporting a double edged blade thereupon, said holder having the ends thereof bevelled, a resilient guard member having its ends grooved to receive the bevelled ends of said blade holder whereby the guard may be automatically held in either one position or the other adjacent either edge of the blade, and means for pivotally mount ing said guard for movement in the manner stated. v
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
