PORTABLE ELECTRIC LIQUID HEATER. APPLICATION map MAYZI, 1921.

VV/fness [/7 venfo)" PATENT, OFFICE.
ORAN w. MONTGOMERY, or LAKEWOOD, OHIO.
PORTABLE ELECTRIC LIQUID HEATER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that 1,0RAN lV. Mona concur, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lakewood, in the county of (luyae hoga, in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Relating to Portable Electric Liquid Heaters.
The objects of my invention are first to provide, a small compact appliance that can be immersed in any vessel in which it is desired to heat a quantity of liquid, and second to provide an efiicient heating means, together with such features of construction as will insure safety 'to the user.
Referring to the drawings, a system of numerals is employed in which correspond numerals refer to corresponding parts,
in as detailed by the systematic order of reference employed in the specification.
Fig. 1, shows a crosssection of my device taken as a vertical side view.
Fig. 2, shows a plan view of the interior layout.
Fig. 3, shows a plan view of the exterior of the device minus the connecting wires and grounding attachment.
Proceeding with thedescription of Fig. 1, 1, is a case of such design as will enclose and protect the heating unit which is placed within.
52 is a tube and is secured to the plate 3, by means provided, this tube serves as a handle for the heater, as well as a conduit fer conveying the current supply wires to the heating unit. The plate 3, is provided with a series of openings as, shown under Fig. 3 through which. liquid being heated may circulate from the interior of the heater to the container holding the supply of liquid. This plate is secured to the case 1, by means of the screws 4-.
ll and 12 are carbon or metallicdiscs and are suspended within the case from the plate 3, by means of the insulator 6, an insulating washer l3, separates the two discs and provides a gapwhich will permit a film of water to lie between. It is by this construction that I utilize the resistive character istics of water or other liquids to serve as a heating element. As the current attempts to pass through the water it becomes heated and forcing its way outwardly is displaced by other colder water entering the heater from the vessel holding the liquid to be heated. i
Disc 12 is connected to wire 10, of the claim is,
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug. 8, 1922.
Application filed May 21, 1921. Serial no. 471,305,
electric circuit by means of the bolt '7, which passes through the insulator 6.
Disc 11, is connected to the other wire of the circuit by means of the washer 8, to which the wiremay be connected. by any suitable means. 5 is a hard rubber or other insulative cap which covers the electrical connections at the base of the tube 2. the top of the tube 2 is inserted the bushing 1.4,. which serves to'prevent abrasion of the wires entering at this point.
I have found it excellent practice to fill the part of the tube surrounding the wires with a vitreous or other cement which will prevent water from entering.
15 is a flexible cable or chain which serves as a detachableground connector, and lS PIO vided with a clip 16, by which attachment to any permanent ground, such a water pipe or faucet is made by drawing the cable through the clip. The object of the ground i if through the water during the process of I heating.- I
Having described my invention, what I l. A portable electric liquid heater com prising a pair of annular electrodes, spaced y and insulated apart, a case for receiving said electrodes, means for insulating said electrodes from said case, a plate covering said case, a series of aperturesin said plate allowing for liquid circulation inwardly and outwardly of said case, means for fastening said plate to said case, a handle secured vertically to said plate, said handle serving as a protective support to an insulated conductor adapted to supply current to said heating electrodes, substantially as described for the purpose set forth. i
2. A portable electric liquid heater com prising a pair of annular electrodes spaced and insulated apart, a case for receiving said electrodes, means for insulating said elec trodes apart, means for connecting each of said electrodes to ya source of electric supply, a plate covering said case, a series of apertures in said plate, means for suspending said electrodes within said case, means for forming a gap between said electrodes and means for passing a quantityof water from an externa the electrodes, and means for passing the water out of said case as it becomes heated,
source into the gap between substantially as described for the purpose set forth.
1). A portable electric liquid heater (0mprisiiuz an electric heating element, a flat 5 use for receiving; said heating; element, a
plate covering said ease, means for fastening- .aid plate to said case, a handle secured v rtieally to said plate,-a pair of Wires passing through said handle and terminating at iu-ezms for connecting said wires to said heating; element Within said ease, substantially fllOWli and described. 4;. A portable electric liquid heater, ceml'irisiiig a pair of annular electrodes, spaced l5 and insulated apart, a case for receiving said i. i in eleetrodes, a means "fer iusulatii'ig' said electrodes from raid 386, a plate covering the top of said ease, a series of apertures in said plate allowing for liquid circulation inwardly and outwardly of said *ase, a, handle secured "vertically from said case, said handle serving as a protective support to the in sulated conductor adapted to supply current to said heating units a flexible grounding attachment, provided with a clip by widen the heater may be grounded, si'ilistantially as described.
