SHABPENER FOR MEAT-SLICING MACHINES.
Application filed May 24, 1921.
T 0 all u; ham it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. H. BRAUN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sharpeners for Meat-Slicing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The principal object of the present in vention is to provide comparatively simple, reliable and efficient means for sharpening or grinding the circular knives of meat slicing machines.
The invention will be claimed at the end hereof but an embodiment of it selected from among other embodiments will be first described in connection with the illustration of the accompanying drawings forming part hereof and in which- Figure 1 is a side View with parts broken away and parts shown in section.
Fig. 2 is an edge view with parts broken away and parts shown in section.
Fig. 3 is a view looking in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 2 and being of the nature of a top or plan view, and
Fig. t is a transverse sectional view showing the parts in a position different from that occupied by them as shown in Fig. 2.
In the drawings 1 and 2 are sharpeners each of the form of a conic frustum and they are provided with generally upright spindles 3 and 4t. The axis of one spindle 4: is inclined to the plane of the knife a to present the conica face of its sharpener 2 to the knife face Z), Fig. 2. The axis of the other spindle 3 is inclined in a plane parallel to the knife plane to present the conical face of its sharpener 1 to the beveled knife face 0 in sharpening or skew relation, Figure 1. There is a guide for positioning the spindles in the described relation and in which the spindles are free for affording gravity rolling contact of the sharpeners with the knife and there are manual means for lifting and holding the sharpeners out of action. As shown the guide consists of a bracket 5 carried by the post d in which the knife a is mounted and of an arm 6 carried by the bracket 5. The arm is provided with duplicate fittings so that a description of one will suffice for both. 7 is a hub or bearing on the arm 6 and in which the spindle is freel rotatable and which is provided with a notch 8. 9 is a knob which engages Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Au 8, 1922.
Serial No. 472,189.
a collar 10 on the spindle and in which the spindle is freely rotatable. The knob 9 is provided with a pin 11 which can be turned to seat on top of the hub 7 so as to throw and hold the sharpener out of action and which can be turned into the notch 8 so as to permit the sharpener to contact under the influence of gravity with the knife and be rotated thereby.
In use when the sharpeners are not in action they are held in elevated position by turning the knobs 9 into position for bringing their pins 11 on top of the hubs 7. When it is desired to bring either of the sharpeners into action, its knob is turned so as to align its pin 11 with the notch 8 in its hub and thus permit the sharpener to drop and run in contact with the knife being held to its work by gravity, or otherwise stated, by the weight of the sharpener and its spindle.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that modifications may be made in details of construction and arrangement without departing from the spirit of the invention which is not limited as to those matters or otherwise than as the prior art and the appended claims may require.
1 claim:
1. A knife sharpener for slicing machines comprising the combination of two sharpeners each of the form of a conic frustum and provided with generally upright spindies of which one is inclined to the knife plane to present the conical face of its sharpener to the flat knife face and of which the other is inclined in a plane parallel to the knife plane to present the conical face of its sharpener to the beveled knife face in sharpening or skew relation, a guide for positioning the spindles in the described relation and in which the spindles are free for affording gravity rollin contact of the sharpeners with the knife, and manual means for lifting and holding the sharpeners out of action.
2. In a knife sharpener for slicing machines the combination of an arm provided with a notched vertically disposed hub, a grinder provided with a spindle free for revolution and endwise gravity movement in the hub, a knob provided with a projection adapted to rest on the top of the hub and in the notch, and a collar interposed between the knob and spindle.
