IVIOLD FOR BUILDING CHIMNEYS 0E REENFORCED CONCRETE.
Application filed'J'une 22,
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAoQUns QUosT, of 41 Rue de la Tour dAuvergne, Paris, France, engineer, have invented new and useful limprovements in Molds for Buildlng 'Qlllll'lneys of Reenforced Concrete (for which I have filed applications in France August 29, 1913, Patent No. 461,995; England Au ust 19, 1914, Patent No. 18,831 of 1914; Swltzerland August 24, 1914, Patent No. 71,668; Spain August 22, 1914, Patent No. 58,969; Italy August 28, 1914, Patent No. 10, vol. 438; Belgium June 11, 1920, application Serial No. 21,689), which improvements are fully set forth in the following specification.
Most factory chimneys of reenforced con crete are outwardly of cylindrical shape which allows the employment throughout of molds of the same shape and size.
When chimneys are built with a conical exterior (which as is known possesses great advantages over the former method) molds of dimensions which vary according to the diameter of the portion of the chimney which is being built must be employed; this necessitates a number of molds and entails considerable expense.
By this invention a chimney or other conical structure may be built with the aid of a single mold of suitable shape, the mold adapting itself to all portions of the chimney from the base to the top.
WVith a suitable shape and size of mold all existing types of factory chimneys can be constructed, one mold only being required.
According to this invention a mold is formed of a number of elements of fixed shape and size (the number varying according to the diameter of the chimney) capable when being assembled together of adapting themselves to the diiference in diameter at the different courses.
Chimneys made with such molds will have an outer conical facing of polygonal sections, the sides, varying in number according to the size of the chimney, being usually alternate plane and concave. It may be observed that the radius of each element of the mold remains fixed whatever may be the height at which it is applied.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of one mold element and Figure 2 is a diagrammatic perspective view Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug, 8, 1922. 1920. Serial 110,390,977.
showing the mounting of the mold elements upon a chimney during building. Figure 8 1s a fragmentary plan view of a modified form of mold.
Each mold element consists of a constant member a (formed for example of a metalsheet strengthened with angle irons a) and a member 0 (also formed of a metal sheet strengthened by angle irons a) of which the slze of the operative part varies; each member 0 is connected by a hinge Z) to a constant member a and is of a length dependent on the largest size of chimney to be built and of a suitable concave shape dependent on the same consideration.
Each member 0 engages with the constant member a of the neighbouring element. This may be effected by providing each member a with a ends are bent at d and cl" to form a guide for the varying member and allow it to slide relatively to a with the necessary play.
Any other arrangement for guiding the varylng member of an element along the constant member of a neighbouring element may be employed.
For example as in Figure 3 there may be arranged along the ends d d of the pin d an eccentric roller 6 which may be moved in any suitable manner from the inside into a position such as will either clamp the member 0 against a when molding or will unclamp it when it is desired to move the mold.
When building a chimney a certain num ber of mold elements are arranged side by side, each varying member 0 0 etc, engaging the guides (Z d" of the neighbouring element; the constant members a a, a, are connected together by adjustable bars 7. The varying members 0 0 will project more or less from the guides according to the diameter of the chimney at the course.
When the first portion of the chimney is finished the mold elements are separated and moved up and so on.
In the modification shown in Figure 8 in place of a hinge the constant portion a may be provided with eccentric rollers 9 similar to the rollers e and for the same purpose. The member 0 is then quite independent and is merely arrested by an abutment h.
A mold of similar type or other mold may serve for the inside facing of the chimney.
This arrangement of mold is applicable pin d whose projecting not only to factory chimneys but to any structures of reenforced concrete having a comcal facing.
Having now particularly described and asccrtained the nature of my said invention and in What manner the same is to be performed I declare that What I claim is:
1. A mold for building chimneys or other similar structures made up of elements each comprising a member of constant size and a member of which the size of the operative part varies substantially as described.
2. A mold for building'chimneys or other similarstructures made up of elements each comprising a member of constant size. and a member connected at one edge'to the constant member and capable of sliding relative to the constant member of the adjacent ele ment substantially as described.
3. A mold as claimed in claim 1 in Which the varying member is cylindrical.
4-. A mold as claimed in claim 2 in which the varying member is cylindrical.
5. A mold as claimed in claim 1 in Which the various constant members are connected by adjustable bars.
6. A mold as claimed in claim 2in Which the various constant members are connected by adjustable bars.
In testimony whereof I have signed this 30 specification.
JACQUES QUOST.
