IMPROVEMENT IN SEALING PRESERVE-CANS.
VSpecification forming part 0f Letters Patent No. 14,245, dated February 12, 1856.
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RNV. LEWIs, of Honesdale, county of Wayne, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful IInprovement in Preserve-Gans, of which the following description, illustrated by the drawings andv references, is sufficiently clear and comprehensive to enable others of competent ability to construct and use my improvement.
The nature of my invention relates to the mode of closing up the can by which the rubber or other, material used for packing is effectually prevented from turning round, tearing or wrinkling, While the cap or cover of the can is being screwed down upon it, and also preserving the contents of the can from contact with the rubber, by which ,they acquire an unpleasant flavor.

A is the cap or cover which screws down upon B, the neck of the can. D is a thin plate of tin, to which a, smaller plate, E, is fastened by a central rivet after the rubber packing has been placed between these plates.. This latter plate is made so as to enter and fill the throat F of the can, and serves to protect its contents from the rubber, which extends beyond the periphery of this plate, so as to bear upon the raised circular edge or surface G. The projecting ribs II, in the mouth of the can, enter the notches I in the plate D and I prevent it from turning while the cap is firmly screwed down upon it. If desirable, I make the raised edge or surface G of sufficient breadth to allow the plate E to `rest upon the surface of the raised edge G and render the raised ring orsurfaceJ in the cap of sufficient diameter to kpress upon the plate D and the packing K at a little distance beyond the space covered by the plate E, in either case forming a partition between the rubber and the cans contents. After the cap is properly screwed down, I fill the space intervening between the inner ring of the cap and the mouth of the can with meltedwax poured through holes in the top of the cap whenever it is thought best, for double security, to do so. In the latter-case the projecting plate, which contains the notches I,
prevents the wax from touching or injuring the rubber.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:
l. The plate E, as a means of protecting-the cans contents from the rubber packing.
2. The combination of the projecting ribs H with the cap A, constructed, combined, and operating substantially in the manner and for the purpose specified.
