WRENCH.
Application filed September 24, 1921.
T 0 all '20 ham itlmay concern Be it known that I, HARLEY E. BUTTER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Pittsburgil i, in the county of Allegheny and State of ennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to improvements in wrenches, and more particularly to that type of wrenches in which there is a stationary jaw and a movable jaw engaging a guide in said stationary jaw, and a handle pivotally mounted on the stationary jaw and connected to the movable jaw, whereby upon moving said handle the slidable jaw is moved toward and from said stationary jaw.
The object of my invention is to simplify in many respects the construction of such wrenches, and provide means whereby the movable jaw may be readily detached and a new one secured in place without the necessity of taking the wrench all apart.
To these ends my invention comprises the novel features hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing Fig. 1 is a vertical elevation of my improved wrench with the jaws open; Fig. 2 is a like view with the handle partly broken away and the jaws in section; Fig. 3 is an edge view showing the stop-plate removed for withdrawing the slidable jaw to the position indicated in dotted lines, Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is an opposite edge view; Fig. 5 is a view showing the slidable jaw removed; and Fig. 6 is a vertical sectional view of the fixed jaw removed.
In the drawing the numeral 2 designates a suitable handle which is pivoted by the bolt 3 to the bifurcated portion 4 of the stationary jaw 5.
The stationary jaw 5 has the guideway 6 formed thereinwith the shoulders 7 adapted to receive the extension 8 of the movable jaw 9.
A link 10 is connected by the pin 11 to the extreme upper end of the handle 2, and the opposite end of said link is connected by the screw 12 to the lug 13 on the movable jaw 9.

ment of the movable jaw 9, a stop-plate 14: is provided which is secured in place by screws 15 entering openings 16 in the ends of the fixed jaw 5.
When my improved wrench is in use and it is desired to grasp the pipe 16, or other object, the handle 2 is moved to the position indicated in full lines, Fig. 2, which acts to pull the movable jaw 9 so as to engage the pipe 16 and clamp it securely between the jaws.
In case it is desired to remove the movable jaw 9 it is only necessary to remove the screws 16 and withdraw the plate 14, whereupon by moving the handle 2 to the position indicated in dotted lines in said figure, the screw 12 which connects the link 10 to the lug 13 of the movable jaw 9 is exposed to view, and by unscrewing said screw said movable jaw is released and a new one can be applied, or the old jaw may be repaired and restored again to place. This is made possible by having the link 10 pivoted to the outer end of the movable jaw 9.
By my invention I provide a very efiicient and simple form of a wrench of this particular type in which there is a direct pull upon the movable jaw when brought into engagement with the object to be operated on, while at the same time the removal of the movable jaw is conveniently provided for without taking the wrench entirely apart.
What I claim is:
1. In a wrench, the combination of a member carrying a stationary jaw and having a guideway, a movable jaw having an extension engaging said guideway, a handle pivotally connected to said member, a link pivotally connected to the upper end of said 4 handle and to a lug formed at the outer lower end of said movable jaw, and a removable stop plate secured to said member for limiting the movement of said movable jaw away from said fixed jaw.
2. In a wrench, the combination of a member carrying a stationary jaw and having a guideway, a movable jaw having an extension engaging said guideway, a handle pivotally connected to said member and having a straight extension above its point of pivotal ment of said movable jaw away from said 10 connection, a link pivotally connected to the fixed jaw.
upper end of said handle and to a lug formed In testimony whereof, I, the said HARLEY at the outer end of said movable j aw, said E. BUTTER, have hereunto set my hand.
