IMPROVEMENT' IN LAMPS.`

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,1l32, dated September 2, 1873; application filed July 2s, 1873.

To all 'whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, WILLIAM S. BLAIS- DELL and Guns. K. YOUNG, of Factory Point, in the county of Bennington and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamps; and we do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings and to the letters Of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The burning of kerosene in lamps and lanterns for illuminating purposes has been attended with two difficulties-one, an incomplete combustion 5 and the other, the breakage of lamp-chimneys.

The object of our invention is to obviate these difficulties; and to this end the nature of our invention consists in adjusting an outer glass or mica tube or chimney resting on a close base and surrounding the ordinary burner and chimney, whereby we obtain a heated draft, which materially aids combustion, and, also, in the passage of the air down between the chimneys, an cqualized temperature, and sure protection for the inner and heated chimney, while the outer one isprotected by the same draft from such high heat as to endanger it from drops of water or drafts of cold air. Our invention also consists in an adjustable cap so constructed as not to obstruct or mix the issuing draft from the inner chimney with that going in to supply the ame to be used in the case of lanterns.

In order to enable others skilled in the art l to which Our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which is represented a vertical section of our lamp.

A represents the bowl or reservoir of a kerosene-lamp, with burner B and supports a a for the chimney C to rest upon. These parts may all be constructed and arranged iny any of the known and usual ways, as we lay no claim to the same, our invention being applicable to any lamp of whatever construction.

TO the burner B, a suitable distance belowthe lower edge of the chimney C, is attached Va disk, D, with ilanges projecting upward at its Outer edge, and forming a solid base, upon which an outside chimney, E, of glass, mica, or other suitable transparent material, may rest and be held. The chimney E surrounds and incloses the ordinary chimney O, leaving a space between them for a current of air; and this current of air, while flowing down between the two chimneys, becomes heated, and is held and guided by the solid or close base D tO supply the flame. This current of heated air also heats the exterior chimney E, but not so much as to endanger it Or cause it to break from any draft or cold air or drops of water that might accidentally come on it. Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters latcnt, is

The combination of the exterior and interior chimneys O E, closed base D, and cap G, arranged to fit on both chimneys by downward-projecting flanges, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
