RECORD WIPER FOR PHONOGRAPHS. APPLICATION FILED APR.17- x922.

RECORD WIPER FOR PHONOGRAPI-IS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 25, 1922.
Application filed April 17, 1922. Serial No. 553,375.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that CHARLEY LANDGRAF and JOHN HERNACKI, citizens of the United States ofeAmerica, residin at Chicago, in the county of Cook and tate of Illinois. have invented new and useful Improvements in Record Wipers for Phonographs, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provlde a simple and eflicient means in the form of an attachment for phonographs and similar musical and talking machines for wiping the record to remove dust from the surface thereof and particularly from the sound groove as a means of preventing irregular or undesirable vibrations of the needle and protecting the sound groove from injury; and with this object in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view of a wiper embodying the invention applied in the operative position to the sound arm of a conventional form of phonograph.
Figure 2 isan end view of the same to show the inclination of the brush holder to correspond with that of the needle.
The device consists essentially of a supporting arm 10 provided with suitable means for attachment to a sound arm indicated at -11 and carrying a brush 12 of which the fibres are attached to a body portion con sisting of a plate 13 arranged in contact with the supporting arm and disposed by reason of the transverse inclination or oblique position of the latter at an inclination to the plane of the record which corresponds approximately with the inclination of the nee dle and which, therefore, is adapted to drag or wipe the fibres along the surface of the record as it is rotated to effectually remove any dust or foreign matter from the sound groove. In the construction illustrated the supporting arm consists of a flat strip of metaltwisted at 14 to provide for the transverse inclination of that portion to which the brush is attached and which is longitudinally slotted as indicated at 15 for the reception of a set screw 16 which serves to secure the body portion of the brush in place in a position best suited to effect the desired object and to adapt the brush to be adjusted to suit the construction of the phonograph. Furthermore the plate 13 forming the body portionof the brush is slotted as indicated at 17 also for engagement by said set screw 16 to provide for adjustment of the brush toward and from the plane of the record to insure an efficient operation thereof.
It will be obvious that the device can be readily applied to any of the ordinary or commercial forms of phonographs in a position to precede the sound box needle in traversing the sound groove so as to remove any particles of dust or foreign matter which may have accumulated in the groove to insure a proper reproduction of the record.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new and useful is 1. A record wiper for phonographs and similar machines having a supporting arm provided with means for engagement with a phonograph sound arm, and a brush having a body portion consisting of a plate arranged in contact with said arm and adjustably mounted thereon for arrangement in advance of the sound boxneedle. the sup porting arm having a longitudinal slot and the body portion of the brush being provided with a corresponding slot extending at right angles thereto for mutual engagement by a set screw to provide for adjustment of the brush in directions parallel with and transverse to the length of the supportmg arm.
2. A record wiper for phonographs and similar machines having a supporting arm provided with means for engagement with a phonograph sound arm, and a brush carried by .and connecting with said supporting arm by a single attaching means whereby the brush may be adjusted both towards and away from the record or longitudinally of said supporting arm or both.
In testimony whereof they affix their signatures.
