Description
C. F. GODDARD. Harvester-Reels.
Patented September 2,1873.
UNITED STATES PATENT Darren,
CHARLES F. GODDARD,
OF ST. ANSGAR, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HARVESTER-REELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,389, dated September 2, 1873; application filed July 12, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. GODDARD, of St. Ansgar, in the county of Mitchell and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Adjustable Harvester- Reel, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a top view of my improved reel. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view of the same taken through the line a: 00,.Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section through the two-part collar applied to the hollow revolving shaft.

My invention has for its object to furnish an improved harvester-reel, which shall be so constructed that the driver may conveniently adjust or incline the reel-bars, so as to bring leaning grain upon the platform in much better position than when constructed in the ordinary manner. The invention consists in the reel-shaft, made in two parts, provided with grooved and recessed flanged collars at their inner ends, the grooved disk, the rod,
and the lever, in combination with each other,
and with the bent inner ends of the reel-arms; and in the jointed reel-bars and their connecting-rods, in combination with the reelarms, the shaft, made in two parts, provided with grooved and recessed flanged collars at their inner ends, the grooved disk, and the operating rod and lever, as hereinafter fully described.
A represents the reel-shaft, which revolves inposts attached to the frame-work of the harvester, and to which motion is given in the ordinary manner. The reel-shaft A is made in two parts, having flanged collars B formed upon their inner or adjacent ends, the flanges of which are securely bolted to'each other. In the adjacent faces of the flanges B are formed grooves to receive the reel-arms O, which grooves and arms are arranged tangentially to the shaft A. The inner ends of the arms (3 are bent inward at right angles, so
as to enter a groove in the surface of a small disk, D, placed in a cavity-formed to receive it in the central parts of the flanged collars B, which cavity is made larger than the disk D, so that the said disk may be moved longitudinally in a recess with relation to the shaft A. The inner part of the shaft A is made hollow to receive the rod E, which passes through it, and to the inner end of which is attached the grooved disk D. With the outer end of the rod E is connected one end of a lever, F, which is pivoted to a support attached to the frame-Work of the machine. The other end of the lever F extends back into such a position that the driver can readily operate it with his foot to adjust the reel-bars G, as may be desired. The reel-bars G are attached to the outer ends of the arms 0, and may be made in one rigid piece, or may be made in three pieces. In the latter case, the middle part is made short, and to its ends are jointed the end parts. The outer ends of the end parts of the jointed reel-bars G are supported by rods H, the outer ends of which are pivoted to said end parts, and their inner ends are pivoted to the shaft A, as shown in Fig. 1.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The shaft A, made in two parts, provided with recessed flanged collars B, the grooved disk D, the rod E, and the lever F, in combination with each other and with the bent inner ends of the reel-arms O, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The jointed reel-bars Gr and the connecting-rods H, in combination with the reel-arms (l, hollow shaft A, made in two parts, one of which is hollow, provided with recessed flanged collars B, the grooved disk D, the rod E, and the lever F, substantially as herein shown and described.
