Description

W. V. WALKER.

Patented A11gus15,-1873.v 1
wezzim @@Ww mwmmm milza @i A'rES PATENT QEEIGEu WILLIAM v. WALKER, or nEEssEnvILLE, NEW Yonx.'
IMPRQVEMENT IN MowmG-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,611, dated August 5, 1873; application filed July 15, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it Yknown'that I, W. V. WALKER, of Dresserville, in the county of Cayuga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harvesters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specication.
My invention relates to that class of harvesters in which two reciprocating knives are used running in opposite directions, one on top of the other 5 and the nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the devices for giving to the knives the reciprocating motion, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make andY use the saine, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation,l referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a perspectiveview of so much of a harvester as will illustrate my invention, and Fig. 2 is a section of the driving-wheel which operates the knives.`
A represents the inger-bar of a harvester, attached to a suitable frame, B, which is connected to the axle C. On each end of this axle is placed a wheel-one, D, of which is provided with a circumferential rim, E, extending inward, as shown in Fig. 2. On the inner side of this rim is formed a zigzag groove, a, by attaching flanges to form said groove, or'in any other suitable manner. G G represent the knives or cutter-bars, moving one upon the other on the finger-bar. From the inner end of each cutter-bar G extends a rod, I), inward toward the Wheel D. These rods pass through the ends of a lever, H,
which is pivoted in the center to the frame B or to an arm extending from the same. The ends of the lever H are forked, and the rods b b are pivoted in the same. After passing through the forked ends of the lever H the rods extend to'the inner side of the rim E on the wheel D, and their extreme ends are bent into the zigzag groove a, and have rollers z' t' upon them to work in said groove.
It will readily be seen that, the lever H being of the proper length, as the machine moves forward the knives or cutter-bars G G obtain a reciprocating motion in opposite directions.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent', is-
The combination, with the two knives or cutter-bars G G, of the rods b b, lever H, rol1- ers t' t', and the zigzag groove a formed on the inside of a projecting rim on the drivin g-Wheel D, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I alix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM V. WALKER.
