COMBINED YARN GLEARER AND TENSION DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 25,1922.
Application filed April .1, 1921.. Serial No.=4=57,728.
and useful Improvement in a 1 Combined -Yarn Clearer and Tension Device, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my. invention is to provide a combined yarn clearer and tension which will have novel features of construction, wherebythe yarn may be efiiciently cleared and a suitable tension applied thereto.
1 A. further object is to provide a device of this character in which the horizontally disposed knives on which the discs rest are provided with a plurality of edges, the knives being rotatively adjustable in their holder whereby different edges may be presented to the discs. I j
A further object is to provide a device of the. above character, in which either the holderfor the knives or the holder for the weighted discs may be automatically reciprocated to move the points of contact between the discs and knives so that the local ized wear upon the knives will be reduced to a minimum and the life of the device materially increased.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawr ings, in which,
Fig. 1 represents a plan view of the device and its adjacent parts.
Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of the same.
Fig. 3 represents a front end elevation.
The rotary cam shaft is denoted by 1 and its cam by 2. A reciprocating cam bar 3 is provided with studs or rollers & and 5 engaging the periphery of the cam 2. A fixed horizontally arranged bar 6 is located above the reciprocating cam bar 3.
A knife holder uprises from and is fixed to the reciprocating cam bar 3. The upright portion 7 of this holder is provided with a collar 8 surrounding the cam bar 3, and a yoke 9 partially surrounding the bar 6 and slidable along the same. A set screw 10 serves to fasten the collar 8 in the proper adjusted position on the cam bar The upright 7 of the knife holder is provided with a cross-bar 11 from which project a horizontal series of knives 12 arranged in pairs. Each of these knives is provided with a plurality of edges, (in the present instance three) and it is rotatively adjustable in the arm 11 of the knife holder, preferably by providing the knife with a round shank located in a hole through said arm 11.' A set screw 13 is provided for each of the knives 12 to secure the knife in its properly adjusted position.
At the inner end of the arm 11 of the knife holder I preferably provide a yoke, the resilient arms of which are denoted by 141 and 15, which arms carry the blades 16 and 17 of a slub catcher. An adjusting screw 18 engages the resilient arms 1 1 and 15 to adjust the width of theslot between the blades 16 and 17 of the slub catcher.
The upright 19 of a weighted disc holder is provided with a yoke 20 which surrounds the reciprocating cam bar 3, and a hub 21 which surrounds the fixed bar 6. A set screw 22 is arranged to secure the upright 19 of the weighted disc holder in its adjusted position on the bar 6, it being understood that the cam bar 3 freely reoiprocates through the yoke 20 of the said disc holder.
To the top of the upright 19 I secure the shank 23 of a T-shaped arm, the lateral branches of which are denoted by 2 1, 25
These branches 2%, 25 are provided with a difierent transverse planes so as to offset certain of the discs from the others. In the present instance I have shown the discs as arranged in a curved line.
The arm 25 of the disc holder may be provided with a leading-in guide 28 for properly directing the yarn to the first disc, and the arm 11 of the knife holder may be provided with a guide 29 for leading the yarn from the last disc to the slub catcher.
From the above description it will be seen that by the rotary movement of the shaft 1, the cam 2 causes the reciprocation of the cam bar 3 and thereby the reciprocation of the knives 12 to constantly change their points of contact with the weighted discs 27. This constant movement of the knives will reduce the localized wear on the r edges which contact with the discs to a minimum.
It is obvious that instead of reciprocating the knife holder, the disc holder could just as readily be reciprocated to produce the same effect.
When the contact edges of the knives become unduly worn, the knives may be rotatively adjusted to bring a new set of contact edges into coaction with the discs. By this adjustment, the life of each knife is materially increased. When the knives become useless or inefiective they may be readily removed and replaced by new knives, thus materially reducing the cost of the yarn clearer and tension device as a whole.
It is evident that various changes may be resorted to in the construction, form and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention; hence I do not wish to limit myself to the particular construction herein shown and described, but
l/Vhat I claim is 2- 1. A combined yarnclearer and tension, comprising horizontally disposed parallel knives, and a weighted disc resting thereon.
2. A combined yarn clearer and tension, comprising horizontally disposed parallel knives and weighted discs resting thereon.
3. A compound yarn clearer and tension, comprising horizontally disposed parallel knives, each having a plurality of edges, and a Weighted disc restingon said knives.
i. A combined yarn clearer and tension, comprising horizontally disposed parallel knives, each having a plurality of edges, and weighted discs resting'on said knives.
5. A combined yarn clearer and tension, comprising horizontally disposed knives, each having a plurality of edges, and a weighted disc resting on said knives, the knives being rotatively adjustable to present different edges to said disc.
6. A combined yarn clearer and tension, comprising horizontally disposed knives, each having a plurality of edges, and weighted discs resting on said knives, the knives being rotatively adjustable to present diiferent edges to said discs.
7. A combined yarn clearer and tension, comprising horizontally disposed knives, a weighted disc resting on said knives, holders for said knives and disc, and means for automatically reciprocating one of said holders, to move the points of contact between the disc and knives.
8. A combined yarn clearer and tension, comprising horizontally disposed knives, weighted discs resting on said knives, holders ior said knives and discs, and means for automatically reciprocating one of said holders, to move the points of contact between the discs and knives.
9. A combined yarn clearer and tension,
discs resting on said knives, holders for said knives and discs, said knives being rotatively adjustable in their holder to present different edges to said discs, and means for automatically reciprocating one of said holders to move the points of contact between the discs and knives.
11. A combined yarn clearer and tension, comprising a pair of horizontally disposed parallel knives, and a weighted disc resting thereon.
12. A combined yarn clearer and tension, comprising a plurality of pairs of horizontally disposed parallel knives, and a weighted disc resting on each pair of knives.
13. A combined yarn clearer and tension, comprising horizontally disposed knives, their holder, a series of weighted discs resting on said knives, and a holder for said discs having depending pins for loosely mounting the discs.
14. A combined yarn clearer and tension, comprising horizontally disposed knives, their holder, a series of weighted discs resting on said knives, and a holder for said discs having depending pins for loosely mountin the discs, certain of the discs being offset in transverse planes from the other discs.
15. A combined yarn clearer and tension, comprising horizontally disposed knives, their holder, a series of weighted discs resting on said knives, a holder for said discs having depending pins for loosely mounting the discs, and means for automatically reciprocating one of the holders to move the points of contact between the discs and knives.
16. A combined yarn clearer and tension, comprising horizontally disposed knives, their holder, a series of weighted discs rest ing on said knives, and a holder for said discs having depending pins "for loosely mounting the discs, the disc holder'having a leading in guide eye for the yarn, and the knife holder having a slub catcher for the yarn.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed by name this 24th day of March 1921.
JOHN o. MoKEAN.
