FOLDING CRATE.
Application filed September 16, 1921.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. LUCABAUGH, a citizen of the United States, residing near Hanover, in the county of Adams and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Crates, of which the following is a specification.
VThis invention relates to improvements in folding crates.
The details and objects of the invention will appearvas described in connection with the accompanying drawings, afnd hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the drawings forming a part of this specifi-cation like characters of reference are used to designate the same parts in the siX figures, in which,-
Figure l is a side elevation of a crate constructed in accordance with this invention,
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Figure l Figure 3 is a view illustrating the crate as folded, and y Figures 4f, 5 and 6 are detail views.
In the drawings the crate is generally designated by the character A and comprises the bottom B, top or cover C, sides D and E, and ends F and G. y
The `sides D and El comprise a plurality of horizontally arranged slats d and e, fastened at their ends to vertical pivot posts d and e, and ends F and G are similarly constructed with vertical slats f and g, fastened to horizontal pivot members f and g. The ends are also provided with hand holes II by making the middle slats (f and g) shorter and fastening cross members I to them, 'as best shown in Figure 2.
The sides and ends are connected by means of hinge members J, as shown in detail in Figures 4, 5 and 6. The hinge J comprises a pivot pin y' and bearing and socket members j which are embedded in the members e and f.
It will be noted that the hinge members l are entirely concealed. They are positioned between corresponding lside and end members ofthe crates during the process of construction; the pivot pins j are placed in position in the pivot posts and pivotmem- Specication of Letters Patent.

bers before the latter are joined by the slats f and g.
The bottom and cover members B and C comprises a number of longitudinal slats b and c, which are fastened to cross slats b and c. The bottom is ivoted to the side E by means of a pair of hinges so that it may be folded upwardly against the side member and not interfere with the folding of the sides of the crates for shipment or storage. When the bottom is down the ends of the slats b rest on the lowermost members f and g of the ends F and G withV cross slats adjacent to the sides of these members, thereby maintaining the sides in proper relation with each other. The cover can be attached to the side members or not as desired; as shown, the cross slats c extend beyond the outer longitudinal slats C and are adapted to rest on the upper horizontal slats Z and e of the sides D and E, as shown best in Figure 2.
The crate is shown folded in Figure 3,- the bottom C swung up against the side E, and the sidesand ends folded on their hinge members J so that end F engages the side D and end G, the bottom B,- and the cover C is laid on top of the side E.-
Having set forth one embodiment of my invention, I do not desire to have it confined closely to the specific structure shown, it being understood that changes may be made in form, proportion, and organization of its various parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as indicated by the scope of the following claims.
IIlhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A folding crate including vertically pivoted side and end members in which one set of members is provided with pivot posts at their ends and the other set of members has 'horizontal pivot members extending over the ends of said posts, said pivot posts and members having complemental pivot recesses formed therein, pivot elements positioned between the ends of said pivot posts and the ends of said pivot members and eX- tending into the recesses, and bottom and cover members for the crate.
2. A folding Crate including` vertically members having oomplemental pivot recesses pivoted side and end members, said side formed therein, pivot elements positioned l0 members comprising horizontal slats fasbetween the ends of said pivot posts and the tened at theii` ends to vertical pivot posts, ends of said pivot members and extending 5 said end members comprising vertical slats into the recesses, and bottomrtnd cover-memastened at their ends to horizontal pivot bers for the crate. members having ends which extend over the In testimony whereof I aflixmy signature. 15 ends of said pivotposts, said pivot posts and JNO.
