Be it known that I, J AMES E. MGCAFFERTY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Screw Driver, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to a class of working tools.
My invention has for its object primarily to provide a tool or driving device designed to be employed for tightening and loosening screws, bolts and the like in other articles in a manner whereby the necessity for removing the tool from its engagement with the screw to continue its rotation after being partly revolved will be obviated, in order to facilitate the manipulation of the screw, and which also contemplates the provision of lockable parts of the tool so that if cesired it may be used in a fashion similar to operating screw drivers of ordinary types. The invention consists essentially of a handle with a socket having in its entrance a fixed protruding annular row of spaced lugs. In tIQ'SOClKGlL interiorly of the lugs is rotatably mounted. one end of a bit or blade adapted to removably engage the seat'of the head of a screw or bolt tor being revolved, and the hit is also yieldingly movable inwardly and outwardly of "the socket. Projecting from the bit is a. single tooth member or pin designed to be reinovably inserted in the spaces between the lugs when the bit is forced inwardly of the socket of the handle so that the bit and handle may be simultaneously revolved, in order to avoid separation of the bit from the screw when it is desired to turn the screw a number of rotations.
Another object of the invention is to fit; on the hit a cap which also rotatably surrounds the socketed part of the handle; and still another object of the invention is to provide a lock for releasably locking the cap and handle so that the bit will be held against independent rotation of the handle.
A further object of the invention is to provide a. screw driver of a simple and efficient construction which may be made in various sizes.

The tool or screw driver has a handle which may be ofany material in any appropriate size, and in part of the handle is a socket, as 11, of an appropriate depth. In the socket is a sleeve 12 which is secured to the handle by a. pin, as 13, driven through the handle into the sleeve. The portion of the exterior of the handle 10 surrounding the entrance part of its socket may be reduced, as at 14, and the sleeve 12 is of a length so that one of its ends extends beyond the mouth of the socket. On the free edge of this projecting end of the sleeve 12 is an annular row of spaced lugs or teeth 15 which are provided by notching, as at 15, the sleeve so that the lugs are preferably substantially square or rectangular in shapes.
In the sleeve 12 is rotatably disposed one end portion of a bit or blade, as 16, which is of a length so that its secondend portion protrudes some distance beyond the row of lugs 15, and the edge of this second end of the bit may be appropriately sharpened or formed, as at 17, to allow the sharpened end to be arranged in engagement with the seat of the head of a screw or bolt when it is desired to use the tool to rotate the screw inwardly or outwardly of an article in the toothed sleeve fashion common to operating tools of this 1 class. The bit 16 is cushioned in the sleeve 12 by a spring, as 18, which is provided in the bottom of the sleeve for normally serving to force the bit outwardly of the sleeve as well as enabling the bit to yieldingly move inwardly and outwardly of the sleeve. The spring or cushion 18 is also of a size so that the bit normally rests upon the spring within the sleeve some distance from the bottom of the sleeve.

Inthe foregoing description, I have embodied the preferred form of my invent-ion, but I do not wish to be understood as limit ing myself thereto, as I am aware that modi fications may be made therein without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, therefore I reserve to myself the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope thereof.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A screw driver comprising a blade, a handle associated with said blade so as to be capable of rotary and longitudinal movement relatively thereto, a positive clutch member fixed to said blade, a positive clutch member fixed to said handle, said clutch members being arranged to'malre a positive clutch connection with each other as they are made to engage each other by the exertion of a longitudinal thrust upon the handle, resilient means for holding said ratchet members out of operative relation, means to retain the handle and blade operative associated, said last named means being operable at will to permit disengagement of the clutch members by the influence of said resilient means or to lock the clutch members in engagement with each other against the action of said resilient means and comprising a cap rotatable on the handle and the blade and longitudinally slidable on the handle and having a bayonet slot, and a laterally projecting pin fixed to the handle and engaging in said slot, said cap engaging the clutch member of the blade.
