INTERNAL-COMBUSTION AND HOT-AIR ENGINE.
asses.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 25, 1922.
Application filed September 23, 1919. Serial No. 325,670.
To all whom it may'concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERTO BAGNULO, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at-13 Via Bogino, Turin, in the Kingdom of Italy, have invented certain new and useful Imrovements in Internal-Combustion and ot-Air Engines; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a four-stroke internal combustion engine, in which the working cylinder is provided with an auxiliary vaporizing and combustion chamber, to which the fuel is delivered, characterized by the fact that the auxiliary chamber is constituted by a small vaporizer arranged parallel to and at one side of the cylinder and in constant communication therewith, and is provided at its top with a fuel feeding device comprising a hand-controlled cock and an automatic stop valve, so that the fuel is admitted to the vaporizer during the exhaust and suction stroke, and may therefore completely vaporize in a space without air, the air necessary for combustion being introduced into the vaporizer during the engine compression stroke. a
This improved engine has a great efliciency, and is of a very sim 1e and strong construction. The fuel striking against the highly heated surface of the vaporizer has sufiicient time to fully vaporize, so that when the air enters the vaporizer during compression, it is possible to obtain a thorough combustion. The working cylinder is not damaged by the high temperature of the combustion in the vaporizing chamber, as this latter is separated therefrom, while there is drawn into the cylinder an excess of air that does not prevent complete combustion; therefore an energetic cooling of the working cylinder is not required.
' In the annexed drawing is shown by way of-example a constructional form of the engine in vertical section forming the object of the invention.
I The vaporizing and combustion chamber 1. is chiefly constituted by a small vessel placed laterally of and parallel with the working cylinder 2, with the upper end of which it is in constant communication by means of the passage 3. This passage 3 enlarges from the engine cylinder toward the vaporizing chamber 1. On its top 4 is axially placed the liquid fuel supply means that comprises a needle or regulating rod '5 wlth conical end operated b a hand wheel 6 controlling the passage 0 the fuel into the chamber 1 through a pipe 7 an automatic ball valve 8 closes the pipe 9 admitthe chamber 1 by means of a suitable source f and during working by the heat generated by the successive combustions) is vaporized but will not burn owing to lack of air. Dun ing the compression stroke, the air, before being drawn through the cylinder by the piston, gradually enters the vaporizin chamber and is combined with the file vapors that are developed therein during the exhaust and suction and at the beginning of the compression stroke, thus effecting a complete combustion.
The gases burnt in the vaporizing chamber will flow into the working cylinder 2, heating the airleft therein and effecting therewith the expansion stroke.
From the above it will be understood that the zone of the highest temperature is completely separated from the working cylinder, as the fuel vaporization and the formation and burning of the mixture are effected in the chamber 1. Therefore the engine is in the best working conditions, andmoreover it is possible to maintain constantly in the engine such a high temperature that a complete vaporization of the fuel will be as vsured.
tion therewith, and a fuel feeding device above the vaporizing chamber and disally of the cylinder and in constant communication with the cylinder by a passage 3 enlarging toward said chamber, a fuel feeding device above said chamber comprising a fuel regulating valve 5, an atomizing device below said valve and an automatic ball valve 8 between the regulating valve and fuel supply.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name.
ALBERTO BAGNULO.
