COMBINED HINGE AND STOP FOR DESK LIBS .QYND THE LIKE.
Application filed November 20, 1919.
To all w/zom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Cir-raisins A. BROWN,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Gardner, in'the county of WorccsteI. and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have in.- vented a new and useful Improvement in a Combined Hinge and Stop tor Desk Lids and the like, of which the following. to gether with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
The present invention relates to an improved form of hinge device tor use particularly in connection with the lids ot' desks. The invention resides in a construction of the stationary and movable parts oi the hinge, and in the arrangement of said parts relative to the sides, top and lid of the desk, or other hinged article, whereby simplicity, strength and ease of attachment is secured, and at the same time the necessity for any independent stop or limiting member tor the lid is eliminated. The above and other objects are obtained by the form of hinge hereinafter described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in whioh- Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the hinge, with the desk lid in open position.
Fig. 2 is a section through the desk top and lid, showing the hinge in side elevation, with the desk lid in closed position.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view at right angles to the plane in which the section of Fig. 2 is taken.
Fi 4 is a detached view of the stationary mem er of the hinge, and
Fig. 5 is a detached view of the movable member of the hinge.
Like reference characters refer to like parts in the different figures.
In the drawings only so much of the desk structure is shown as is necessary to illus trate the construction and operation ot'a single hinge device, but it will be under stood that the desk is provided. with two such devices, one associated with each of the desk sides '1, 1. As is usual in desks of this class, the sides 1, l, of which one only is shown, have secured thereto a top board 2 which covers a part of the space inclosed by the sides, back, front and bottom or the desk. The closure of the remainder of this space is efiected by a swinging lid 3, which in the present instance is hinged by the use of the Specification oi. Letters Patent.

Serial No. 339,407.
duplicate hinge devices constituting the subect matter of the present invention.
The stationary member of my improved hinge device, as shown in Fig. comprises a stamped or pressed metal plate of ap proximately segmental shape, designated as whole by the numeral -'l. The body or flat portion of plate 4- is adapted to bear against the inner surface oi desk side i, being provided with a hole 5 to receive a screw 6 which secures the plate in place. The plate 4- is prevented from turning or rocking on the screw (5 by the provision of an inwardly directed lateral ear 7, which makes contact with the under side of the top board 2, and is secured to said top board by a screw 8. In this way the stationary member of the hinge is held firmly in place by being attached both to the side of the desk and to the top thereof, with the result that the hinge is greatly strengthened and reinforced.
The pivotal axis of the hinge, With reference to the stationary member i, is prorided at or near the top of an upwardly extending projection 9, in the same plane as the hat portion of plate -i that bears against the desk side 1. This projection 9 is received within a narrow slot or saw-cut 10 formed in the edge of top board 2, as shown in Fig. l. Lying adjacent the projection 9 in the slot or saw-cut 10 is a similarly shaped projection ll of movable hinge member 12, illustrated in Fig. 5. The projections 9 and 11, lying side by side in contact, are pivotally connected by a pin or rivet 13 that passes through suitably alined holes l4, l4 and thus secures the movable and stationary hinge members together.
The movable member 12 of the hinge is a plate of stamped or pressed metal substantially triangular in shape, and with reference to the body or list portion of plate 12, the projection ll, hereinbefore referred to, is offset in a vertical plane that is nearer the desk side l. in other words, the body portion of plate 1:2, when the two parts of the hinge are assembled, is spaced inwardly some distance from the fiat or body portion. ot plate this spacing enables the plate 12 to clear the screw 6 by which the plate 4 is secured to the desk side 1. The plate 12 has an inwardly extending lateral ear 15,
which is secured by screws 16 to the desl: lid 3. In this simple manner the hinge is secured to the side, top and lid of the desk 1, it being clear that the construction is such that all the attaching screws are exposed and readily available, and the construction such that there is no necessity lor countersinking the screw 6 that 860111135 the stationary member of the hinge to the desk side 1.
The curved lower edge of the plate 1, below the s rew 6, is flanged inwardly as shown at 17, so that when the hinge is assembled, the plane of the lange is contiguous to the plane or the body portion of movable member 12, iuei. removed or spaced from the inner surface of desk side 1. l or cooperation with the ilange l7, the plate 1; provides a doubled over lip 18 that embraces the edge of said flange in the movement oi the plate 12 relative to the plate 1 about the pin 13, the lip 18 and flange 1'? cooperate to hold the parts in proper alinement, so as to prevent sidewise rocking or lost motion be tween the parts. at the torward end, the flange 17 has an overturned lip 19 that serves as a stop in the path of lip l8 when the desk lid. is swung open, and positively limits the further opening mevement of said lid.
I claim,
1. A hinge for the movable lid of a desk, said hinge having a stationary element attached to and bearing against the desk side, with the free edge of said stationary ele ment offset from the plane of attachment, and a movable hinge element secured to the des lid and providing a portion embracing edge of said stationary element.
A hinge for the movable lid of a desk, said hinge having a stationary element bearing against the desk side, with its edge removed, or ol'l set therefrom, and a movable clement secured to said lid and providing a portion embracing the ofiset edge ot said. stationary element, said portion cooperating with a stop on said stationary element to limit the opening movement of said lid, said movable element being removed from the plane oi attachment of said stationary ele ient, whereby to clear the attaching means of said stationary element.
Dated this 7th day of November, 1919.
