DRAIN PLUG.
Maaate.
Specieation of Letters Patent.' l Patentgd July 18; 1922; l-
Applilcation led 0ctober2`7, 1919. Serial No. 333,708.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM GRIKSCHEIT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and 4usefull Improvements in Drain Plugs, of Awhich the following is a specifica-` f Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through one form of plug Figure 2 is a same;
Figures 3, 4: and are similar views showinmodified constructions.
rain plugs are usually preferred to drain-cocks for use in -many places where it is only occasionally necessary to drain thel .container and where it is 4deslred to prevent tampering or accidental opening. This is for the reason that a plug requires a wrenchfor loosening or disengaging the same,
whereas a drain cock provided with a handle can be opened `without the'Y use of any tool. Also there are many places where a plug may be inserted, but where a drain cock would be inaccessible. ient to draw o a portion of the contents of the receptacle by removing the drain plug,
inasmuch as it is very diiicult to re-engage the plug while the liquid is flowing out. With the present invention the plug is of a construction permitting drainage without necessity of disengagement, so that any de-- sired portion of the contents can be drawn .off without difficulty.
As shown in Figures Y1 and 2, A is the body of the plug whichl is preferably machined from the hexagonal, or other polygonal stock, and is provided with a threaded nipple B for engagement with the aperture of the container. This member also has -a straight bore C extending axially therei threaded to receive acorrespondingly threaded member F, also preferably formed 7bottomplan view of the,
It is inconvenfrom polygonal stock, leaving the head por- I tion G. The member F is axially bored at H, but this bore is terminating so as to leave an imperforate inner end portion I, preferably of conical form and adapted to seat upon the shoulder E.' The portion of the member F adjacent to the end I is reduced in diameter to leave an annular clearance space J surrounding the same, and one or more lateral -apertures K through the walls of the member F establish communication between the bore H and' said annular clearance space J.
With the construction just described the polygonal portion of the Amember A will serve as a wrench hold for engaging and dis- Vengaging saidv member, and in the same manner the polygonal head portion G of the member F forms a wrench hold, but one of slightly smaller diameter than that of the member'A. Thus the-portion G will not interfere with the engagement of the wrench, or other tool, with the portion A, but will permit of independent turning of the member F.l Therefore, whenever it is desired to drain or partly drain the container in-` stead of loosening the main member A, the member F isv turned through its polygonal head G so as to withdrawthe portion I from the seat E, thereby permitting the liquid to flow through the passage C, annular passage J, apertures K and bore H dischargin from the lower end of the plug.
ith the constructions shown in Figures 3 and 4, the operation' is the same, but provision is made for preventing complete disengagement of the member F. In Figure 3 this meanscomprises an inwardly-extending portion L of the member F which has the bore M extending from its outer end but terminating short ofthe imperforate portion I. The outer end of the member L engages a counterbore N and is flanged outward so as to engage a shoulder at the inner end of said counterbore before the member F is disengaged from the member A. There are also provided one or more lateral apertures l? through the member L establishing communication between the bore M and the annular chamber J when the member F is withdrawn from its seat.
In Figure 4 instead of the inward extension L, the member F is provided with a neck portion Q which is reduced in diameter and the member Ahas at its outer end a flange R turned inward into the groove' surrounding the neck portion Q and adapted to en age a shoulder S at the inner end thereof. ith either of the constructions shown in Figures 3 and 4 the member F may be operated to withdraw the same from its seat, but complete disengagement from the member A is prevented.
In Figure 5 I have shown a construction which may be used as a drain-cock being provided with an operating handle. This construction is substantially the samek -as shown in Figure l with the addition of a handle T which is inserted through a transverse bore in the head member G. This handle is of a diameter less than the bore I-I and therefore will not materially restrict the flow of the liquid therethrough.
What I claim as my invention is:
l. A drain plug comprising two members, one having an axial passage therethrough with an externallythreaded nipple at one end thereof and a counterbore at the opposite end internally threaded, forming an annular shoulder or valve seat at the inner end of said counterbore, the other member having a portion externally threaded to engage said threaded counterbore, being provided with an imperforate portion at its inner end for engaging said valve seat and having an axial passage from its outer end to said imperforate portion -With rightangled ports oommunicatin with said counterbore, and a flange at t e outer end of said first-mentioned member engaging a groove in said second-mentioned member for limiting adjustment thereof and reventing disengagement and flattened sur aces upon the exterior of each of said members rovidinof means for the adjustment of eac 2. drain plug comprising two members,
one having an axial passage therethrough with an externally threaded nipple at one end thereof and a counterbore at the opposite end internally threaded, forming an annular shoulder or valve seat at the inner end of said counterbore, the other member havwith an externally threaded nipple at one end thereof and a counterbore at the opposite end internally threaded, forming 'an annular shoulder or v-alve seat at the inner end of said counterbore, the other member having a portion externally threaded to engage said threaded counterbore, being provided with an imperforate portion atits inner end for engaging said valve seat and having 'an axial passage from its outer end to said imperforate portion with a right angled port communicating with said counterbore and hexagonal surfaces upon each of said members for adjusting them.
4. A drain plug comprising two members, one having an axial passage therethrough with an externally threaded nipple at one end thereof and a counterbore at the opposite end internally threaded, forming an annular shoulder or valve seat at the inner end of said counterbore, the other member having a portion externally threaded to engage said threaded counterbore, being provided with an imperforate portion at its inner end for engaging said valve seat and having an axial passage from its outer end to said imperforate portion with a right angled port communicating with said counterbore, and shouldered surfaces upon each of said members for adjusting them.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
