COMPRESSION STOP AND WASTE COCK.
Specification of Letters Patent. Pate ll ted July 15, 1919.
Application filed February 1, 1918. Serial No. 214,841.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, O'r'ro Gr. Hrrorroook, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, county of Erie, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Compression Stop and Waste Cocks, of which the following is a specifica- 131011.
My invention relates to compression stop and waste cocks, and has for its object to provide certain improvements in the construction of the same, as hereinafter will be more definitely pointed out 'and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing,'in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my 1mproved cock, the same being shown partly broken away.
Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same taken at a right angle to Fig. 1, the cock being shown partly broken away.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line III-III of Fig. 1, the closing plug and drain tube being removed.
Similar numerals of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views.
In the drawing, the reference numeral 1 denotes the casing of the cock, the same being provided with the usual valve stem 2, operating handle 3, and valve 4, all of said parts being of conventional form. On the outlet side of the valve 4 the partition wall thereof is enlarged at 5, and is bored centrally from side to side through the casing wall, the smaller central portion 6 of said bore terminating in seats 7, and said bore being enlarged externally of said seats at 8 and being screw-threaded, as best seen in Figs. 2 and 3. Adapted to fit into either of the screw -threaded enlargements 8 is a screw-threaded plug 9, formed conical at its inner end at 10 to engage against either of the seats 7 to form a water tight closure, while in the other of said screw-threaded enlargements 8 is adapted to fit an externally screw-threaded waste tube 11, also formed conical at its inner end at 12 to fit against one of the seats 7 as doesthe conical portion 10 of the plug 9. The interior bore 13 of the waste tube 11 terminates short of its inner conical end 12, and the side of said tube is apertured at 14, so that when said tube is unscrewed to unseat the conical end 12, communication will be established between the small central portion 6 and the bore 13 through said aperture 14. Said enlargement 5 is apertured also at 15 to form a communication between the central bore 6 and the interior of the casing 1.
When the device is in use, and it is not desired to drain the discharge side of the same, the plug 9 and the waste tube 11 are screwed tightly against the seats 7, which form an effective closure. But when it is desired to drain the cook, the tube 11 is unscrewed to withdraw its conical portion 12 from its seat 7, thereby establishing communication through the aperture 15, central portion 6, aperture 14 and the bore 13 between the outlet side of the cock and the atmosphere, whereby said cock may be drained effectually.
I have formed my device with the enlarged screw-threaded portions 8 on both sides of the central portion 6, and have employed the closing plug 9, for the purpose of providing for draining the cock from either side, it being desirable in some posi tions of use to drain the cock from one side, and 'in other positions of use to drain it from the other side. It will be apparent that by reversing the positions of the plug 9 and the tube 11, the cock can be drained from the left side instead of from the right side, as shown.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a compression stop and waste cook, a casing formed with a transverse passage leading through the partition wall thereof, and a waste tube adjustable in said passage, said tube when in its innermost position closing said passage and when adjusted outwardly therefrom establishing communication between the discharge side of the partition wall and the exterior of the casing.
2. In a compression stop and waste cock, a casing formed with a transverse passage leading through the partition wall thereof, said passage comprising a smaller central bore communicating with the discharge side of said partition, and enlarged portions on each side of said bore internally screwthreaded, said smaller central portion at its ends forming valve seats, a screw plug adapted to be inserted in either of said screw-threaded portions so as to seat against and close its valve seat, and a Waste tube also adapted to be inserted in either screwthreaded portion, said tube being closed at its inner end to close the valve seat of its threaded portion and being apertured in one inner end is withdrawn from its valve seat. 10
In testimony whereof, I hereunto set my hand this J anuar 1918.
OTTO G. HITGHCOGK.
