IMPROVEMENT IN PUMP-BRACKETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,286, dated August 26, 1873; application filed July 24, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, SAML. SELDEN and OREN R. HANCHETT, of Erie, county of Erie, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pump Brackets, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a rear view of the bracket, showing the pivot-block, to which the handle is secured, with the bracket broken away in front of one of the pivots or pivot-bearings. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the pivot-block; `and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a pump, showing the bracket applied.

The invention relates to a novel construction of the pump-bracket and pivot or pivotblock, for preventing endwisc displacement of the pivot when in use; and consists in casting or otherwise constructing the pivot or pivotblock in the desired form, and then casting the U- shaped bracket thereon, in such Inanner as to cause the metal of the bracket to inclose or cover the ends ot' the pivot; or, if preferred7 the pivot and bracket may be made in one piece, and the pump-handle connected with the fixed pivot by a loop-bracket adapted -to turn freely on the pivot, this construction in either case serving elfectually to prevent endwise displacement, and consequent loss of the pivot after the same has been once applied to the pump.
In the accompanying drawing, A represents the pivot-block; a, the pivot formed thereon,
said block and pivot being made in any suita Y ble or desired form, the former for convenience of attachment to the pump-handle or lever, and the latter, by preference, rounded at the ends, as shown, or made conical, as giving the best or most approved form of pivot, and the whole either cast or wrought of iron or steel, as may be preferred.
When cast, and with the sand yet adhering to it, the said block may be placed in a mold formed for it by a print attached to the U-Shaped bracket B, both being molded at the same time. When the bracket is cast, the metal closes around the pivot a, but does not adhere to it in consequence of being coated with sand. The sand will readily work out by a slight movement of the block, leaving it free for any required movement.
A Wrought-iron or steel pivotmay be applied in the same manner, and will thus be in separably connected with the bracket, while at the same time adapted to turn freely in its bearings therein to accommodate the movement of the handle or lever C.
If preferred, the pivot may be formed or cast in one piece with the U-shaped bracket B, either extending entirely across from one arm to the other, or forming conical or cylindrical projections or teats from each arm; in which case the bracket should be cast iirst, and the plate cast to it, reversing the arrangement above described.
The plate or pivot-block will be connected with the handle in yany usual or preferred manner.
