DISPENSING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented July 111, 1922.
Application filed May 3, 1921. Serial No. 466,472.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EARL KENT and GLENN KENT, both citizens of the United States, and residents of Tacoma, in the county of Pierce and State of Washington, have invented a new and Improved 'Dispensing Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Our invention relates to a dispensing device, and aims to provide an element of this character more particularly adapted for use in connection with the formation of what is commonly known as an ice cream brick.
It is well appreciated that difliculty has been experienced in making ice cream bricks comprising a pluralitylof layers of different flavored ice cream. ore particularly this dificulty is to be predicated to the time necessary in the making of one of these bricks, and in properly controlling the thickness of the various layers.
Also the mechanism utilized for accomplishing this purpose has been more or less complicated, and consequently expensive, aside from the fact that a further difficulty has also arisen in connection with its utilization.
With this in mind, we have constructed a dispensing device, which may readily be operated, and which will be extremely simple in construction, and readily capable of association with various sizes of freezer cans, and permit of absolute control of the thickness of layers, forming a complete brick being effected.
Still another object of our invention is the construction of a dispensing device of the character stated which may readily be handled, for the purpose of application in all adaptations, and also permitting of its thorough cleansing when this is desired.
Further objects of our invention will appear in the annexed specification, taken in connection with the drawings, which latter present one practical embodiment thereof, and in which;
Figure 1 is a sectional front view taken along the line 1-1 and in the 'dlI'GCtlOIl of the arrow in Figure 2. I
Figure 2 is a partly fragmentary side view of the device and showing the same in use.
Figure 3 is a plan view of the same.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken along the line la- 4 of Figure 1, and
ous types of freezer cans 6, by any suitable plan View of the means such as a hook 7 which may engage the flange of the can 6.
It will also be noted that a pair of handles 8 are secured to the outer face of the funnel 5 by any suitable means such as ears 9, and these handles extend at diametrically o posite points from the outer face of t e handle and are preferably hollow for a purpose hereinafter more fully specified.
The lower end of the dispensing device includes a nozzle 10, into which the funnel 5 merges, and a suitable controlling element such as agate valve 11 is associated with the outermost end of the nozzle 10 and serves to control the flow of material from this nozzle, it being noted that the movement of the valve is effected by means of a lever 12 conveniently secured to the nozzle 10 as at 13, and spring pressed as at 14 to normally close the valve.
In use, we preferably apply the funnel end 5 of the dispensing device, to the can 6, subsequent to the removal of the latters cap. The entire unit thus presented is then inverted and may be supported manually al though we preferably utilize a pair of bolts 15 driven into a supporting surface in such a manner as to permit of their extending, one through each of the hollow handles 8.
It will be obvious in any event, irrespective of the method of supporting that an operator will be enabled to effect an actuation of the device by rocking the outer end of the lever 12, which preferably lies in proximity to one of the handles 8, and this rocking will result in an opening of the valve 11 and permit of the material flowing from the nozzle 10 into a suitable mold. It will readily be appreciated in normal operation, that the inner faces of the spout 10 would quickly have'the temperature lowered to a point at which the material would cling to the same, and with a view of overcoming this difficulty it will be seen that we may provide a jacket 16 which encircles the outer face of said spout, and, an inlet and discharge pipe 17 and 18 respectively permits of a circulation of a heating medium through this jacket to warm the spout it) thus obviously permitting of the free flow of material therethrough.
In lieu of this type of heating element we may also utilize, as has been indicated in dotted lines in Figure i, an electrical resistance element 19, and this will obviously effect the result desired, and in some instances, in a more satisfactory manner than would be provided by the circulation of a heating fluid.
Thus it will be seen that we have provided a dispensing device primarily for use in the adaptation set forth in the preamble of this specification, but not necessarily limited to this particular association, by means of which an extremely simple form of construetion is provided permitting of the ready manipulation of the device, as well as ositive performance of the functions for winch it is intended.
Obviously numerous modifications of structure might readily be resorted to without in the least departing from the spirit of our invention, which we claim as;
1. A dispensing device including a funnel, handles secured to said funnel and extend ing transversely thereto, said handles being hollow and presenting open ends.
2. A dispensing device, including a nozzle, a funnel merging into the upper end of said nozzle, a heating jacket enclosing said nozzle, a gate valve, a lever pivotally secured to said nozzle and having one of its ends attached to said valve, handles secured at diametrically opposite points to the outer face of said funnel, said lever having one of its ends extending to a point in proximity to one of said handles.
