OIL-WELL PACKER.
To all whom itmay concern:
Be it known that l, CHARLES M. HEETER,
4a citizen of the United States, residing ati in packers .and is designed to provide an in'- expensive 'and eilieient device whereby the packer can be rapidly removed from the well when it is desired to withdraw the same.
Heretoitore in packers ofthis character it was frequently a dicult ob'to withdraw the packers asit was necessary to withdraw the packer in its entirety.
The object ot my invention is to provide a device of this character which can readily be withdrawn in sections. rllhe precise nature of my invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings which will now be described, it being premised, however, that various changes may be made in the details of construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention as defined in the appended claims.
lin Figures '1 .and 2 ll have shown my invention applied to what is known tothe trade as an anchor packer, wherein the reference character `2 designates a casing member of the packer. Connected to the lower end of this casing member 2 is a pipe 3, which extends from the casing member 2 to the bottom of the well, and forms the support for the packer. lSlidably mounted within the casing member 2 is a tube it, which extends through and is arranged to move with l. relation to a dexible packing member 5, which packing member may be ,made of rubber or any suitable material. rlhis packing member normally rests upon a flanged member 6 connected to the upper end ot the casing 2 through which the tube l is adapted to slide, and which forms a support for the .packing member during the'setting thereof,

When the packer, together with the tubing connected thereto, is lowered into the well the parts are in the position shown in Figure 1 and in which the packer, as well as the tubing extending downwardly from the packer, are supported by the bushing 8, the length of the p-ipe or tubing 3 being such that when the lower end thereoengages the bottom of the well, the packer willvbe in the position in which it is to 'be set. llh'en the lower end of the tube or pipe 3 engages the.
bottom of the well, the tube "4t, together with the pipe 11, will move downwardly with relation to the packing member 5 and the casing 2, and when moving downwardly the expander 9 will expand the packing 5 against the wall of the well and if the weight of the tube is suiicient, the upper portion of the packing 5 will be pressed downwardly by the compressor 10 into engagement with the wall of the well. When the parts have been moved to this position, the bushing 8 `ber 5 can then readily be removed by means of fishing tools and after the packing member 5 has been removed, the casing member 2, together with the pipe 3 connected thereto, can also be removed by means of the usual shing tools.

I claim:
1. A well packer, comprising a casing, a tube telescopically mounted with respect to said casing, a flexible packing member surrounding said tube, flanged means detachably secured to said casing'for supporting the lower end of said packing member, said flanged means being disconnected from said tube to permit movement of the tube therethrough, expanding means on said tube for expanding said packing member when the tube is moved through said flanged member into the casing, and a frangible connection between said tube-and said casing permitting the tube to be removed without removingl the packing member in case the packing should stick, but permitting removal of the packer as a unit in c ase the parts thereof do not stick, substantially as described.
2. A well packer, comprising a casing, a tube telescopically mounted with respect to said casing, a flexible packing member surrounding said tube, llanged means detachably secured to said casing for supporting the lowerl end of said packing member and forming a guide for said tube, expanding means on said tube for expanding said packing member when the tube is moved into the casing, a `ring surrounding the lower end of said tube, and a frangible connection between said tube and said ring permitting the tube to be removed without removing the packing member and ring in case the .packing should stick, but insuring removal of the packer asa unit if the parts do not stick, substantially as described.
3. A well packer, comprising a casing, a tube telescopically mounted with respect to said casing, a flexible packing member surround-ing said tube, andv supported at its lower e-nd by said casing, expanding means on said tubefor expanding said packing member when the tube is moved into the casing, a bushing on the lower end of said tube freely movable relatively to said casing and adapted to guide said tube within the' casing, and a frangible connection between said tube and said bushing permitting the tube to be removed without removing the packing member in case the packing should stick, but permitting-removal of the packer as a unit if the parts do not stick, substantially as described.
