CHARLES MAJER, OF BROOKLYN, E. D., NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FoR FoRMINe THE BAcKs oF sAws.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,250, dated August 26, 1873; application led July 9, l1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, CHARLES MAJER, of Brooklyn, E. D., in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Machine for Forming the Backs of Saws; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which drawing- `Figure 1 represents a front view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same, showing the blank depressed by the plunger. Fig. 3 is a similar section of the same, showing the blank compressed to form a-finished back for a saw.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in a V-shaped plunger, which is suspended from a double crankshaft, and guided at its ends in suitable rails, in combination with two jaws which are opened by the action of springs, and which can be compressed by a cam bearing on one of theV jaws throughout its whole length, in such a manner that when the jaws are opened and a heated blank for a saw-back is placed upon them, said blank can be forced down between the jaws by the action of the V-shaped plunger, and when the plungeris raised the blank which remains between the jaws can be iinally brought to the required shape by compressing the jaws.
In the drawing, the letter A designates a frame, which is by preference made of castiron of sufcient strength for the purpose for which itis designed. On this frame are placed two jaws, B B', one of which is stationary and rigidly secured to the frame, while the other moves on guide-rods a. toward and from the stationary jaw, being forced away therefrom by the action of springs b, which are wound round the guide-rods. In the upper part of the frame A is mounted a double crank-shaft,
C, from the cranks of which is suspended a lthe plunger moves up and down on its guiderails in a rectilinear direction. The crankshaft C is geared together with the drivingshaft D by cog-wheels d e, which are so proportioned, that the motion of the crank-shaft is slow, and that in depressing the plunger great power can be exerted. In the front part of the frame A are bearings'for a shaft, E, on which is mounted a cam, F, that bears at different points upon the movable jaw B', so that, when this cam-shaft is turned, the movable sha-ft is forced in toward the stationary jaw uniformly throughout its entire length. Said cam-shaft is geared together with a drivingshaft, G, by means of cog-wheels, which are so proportioned that the cam F can be made to act `on the movable jaw with great power. The bearings of the cam-shaft areV by preference made adjustable, so that the movable jaw can be made to close up more or less, according to the thickness of the blanks from which the saw-backs are to be formed. I These blanks are prepared in the usual manner, they are then heated to a red heat and successively placed upon the jaws B B' under the plunger D. By depressing the plunger,
each blank is carried down between the jaws,
and brought in the form shown in Fig. 2. The plunger is then raised and by turning the camshaft E the blank is compressed between the jaws B B', so that the same assumes the form The combination of a plunger, D, with-two jaws, B B', and with a cam-shaft, E, all constructed and operating substantially in the manner herein shown and described.
This specification signed by me this `29th day of June, 1873.
CHARLES MAJ ER.
