SANITARY GARBAGE CAN. T
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 41,1922.
Application filed May 2, 1921. Serial No. 466,179.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PATRICK KANE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county-of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sanitary Garbage Cans, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to garbage receptacles and an object of the invention is to provide a receptacle for refuse or garbage which may be easily and conveniently emptied when necessary and one wherein the cover may be removed by operation of a lever and swung into an inoperative position relative to the receptacle by swinging move-v ment of its opening lever.
Another object of the invention is to provide a garbage can which is designed to permit the depositing of a disinfectant and antiseptic into the garbage can or receptacle as desired, the said antiseptic depositing means being carried by the cover of the can and arranged to be operated at the will of the-user. g
Other objects of the invention will appear in the following detailed description and in the accompanying drawing wherein:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the improved garbage can.
' Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal section through the garbage can.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical section through the garbage can taken on the line 3-3 of 2.
Fig. 4 is a top plan of the improved garbage can showing the cover moved into inoperative position.
Referring more particularly to the draw- 1 ing the improved garbage can structure comprises a support 1 which includes a suitable base 2 having standards?) and 4 carried thereby. Bearings 5 are carried by the standards 3 and 4 and pivotally receive the trunnions 6 which are carried by the body 7. of thereceptacle. The'body 7 is cylindrical in shape and is rockably supported the trunnions 6 to permit it to be tilted onthe horizontal pivot for emptying the contents therefrom. The can or body 7 is provided with an annular channel 8 formed by the annular rib 9 which channel receives the lower. edge of the cover 10. The cover 10 comprises the substantially cylindrical side member 11 over which the annular side 12 of a removable cover 13 engages, and apair of discs 14 and 15. A disc-14; is rigidly carried by the shell 11 and has its perimeter bent downwardly as shown at 16 for engagement with the upper edge of the body 7.
-The disc 14 15 provided with relatively small perforations 17 while the disc 15, is provided with relatively large perforations 18. The I and 18 when in registration on the contents of the body 7. Sufiicient space is provided within the cover structure 10 between the upper disc 15 and the top 13 to contain a quantity of antiseptic or deodorant so that the supply need not be renewed each time it is desired todeposit such material upon the contents of the garbage can.
The rod 19 projects upwardly through the cover 13 and has a hand lever 22 pivotally connected to its upper end as shown at 23. The hand lever 22 is pivotally supported, intermediate its ends for movement on a horizontal axis, by a suitable pivoted bracket 24 which bracket is in turn supported by the supporting bracket 25'for movement about a vertical axis and thus when the handle 26 of the lever 22 is moved downwardly the entire cover structure 10 will be removed from the body 7 and it may then be swung about in alignment with the receptacle or body 7- by swinging the lever 22 upon its vertical pivot provided by the Fig. 1 0f the drawing and is designed to permit the easy emptying or filling of the receptacle 7.
The bracket 25 is attached, in any suitable of deodorant or disinfectant upon the garbage as it is placed in the receptacle.
As shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawing the disc 15 is providedwith a plurality of openings 30 at its perimeter which are adapted to register with spaces 31 about the downturned flange 16 which permits the dej 95 bracket 24, which position is illustrated in v desire to be limited in any manner except odorant or disinfectant to fall upon portions of the top edge of the receptacle or container pended.
7 so that when the cover structure 10 is removed from the container 7 the lime or disinfectant will fall downwardly into the chaning through said discs and removable cover, a hand lever pivotally connected to said rod, a supporting bracket mounted for pivotal movement on a vertical axis, said hand lever connected to said supporting bracket for pivotal movement upon a horizontal axis. Y
2/In a device as set forth, a rockably mounted receptacle, a removable cover thereon, said cover'comprising a shell, a stationary perforated disc carried by said shell and forming a bottom therefor, a rod connected to sai stationary disc, a removable perforated disc rotatable on said rod to dispense a disinfectant into said receptacle, and a hand lever pivotally connected to said rod and mounted for pivotal movement by horizontal. and vertical axes.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
PATRICK KANE.
